As the tech giant’s AI rivalry with Microsoft intensifies, Google rebranded its ChatGPT-style chatbot on Thursday to Gemini, giving it unparalleled visibility on its platforms.

After hastily releasing its chatbot a year ago to try and outpace Microsoft’s Bing chatbot—which was made possible by the latter company’s collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT—the search engine giant decided to rebrand Bard.

Since their debut, the chatbots—which rely on information scraped from the internet—have grown to produce both text and visuals in response to simple queries.

Importantly, Gemini will be accessible via a clear link on the business’s Google app for iPhones, indicating that the AI chatbot is rapidly elevating to the status of a crucial component of its user experience, comparable to search.

Additionally, Google announced the launch of Gemini Ultra 1.0, its most potent generative AI model to date. Gemini Ultra 1.0 will be offered as an advanced chatbot in 150 countries for $20 per month, but only in English.

On Android phones, the less potent Gemini and Gemini Advanced will run as distinct apps, but on iPhones, they will be incorporated into the Google app.

The company states that it still needs to work out any regulatory obstacles in Europe, which is why the apps are currently unavailable there.

Google’s statement was made the day after Microsoft revealed that it had updated its Copilot app, which is now the new label for the Bing chatbot.

During Sunday’s Super Bowl, Microsoft announced that it would be promoting the use of its stand-alone app, Copilot.

Both Google and Microsoft tout the potential of their products to foster creativity online, despite some skepticism over the long-term applications of generative AI chatbots.
