A 23-year-old lady has been taken into custody by detectives in the Kebaroti area of Kuria East on allegations of fatally stabbing her 3-year-old kid.
On Sunday, January 28, Area Assistant Chief Joseph Senzo verified the event, saying that the suspect had stabbed her 3-year-old child with a kitchen knife.
When detectives arrived at the scene on Sunday, they were able to confirm that 23-year-old Veronicah Nchangwa had stabbed her son in the stomach while he was sleeping at home.
When officers arrived on Sunday, the minor’s body was lying on the bedroom floor.
A truck carrying building supplies crashed into kiosks at P. I. Trading Center on the Mwea-Embu highway, seriously injuring a woman and totaling two motorcycles.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck burst one of its tires as it was moving from Mwea to Embu after hitting a pothole. Motorcycles were destroyed and the woman was struck when the truck’s driver lost control and drove off the road.
Jane Wangeshi claims that because the lorry was moving fast, the woman by the side of the road was unable to flee and was struck by the vehicle.
She claimed that after the lorry slammed into their motorcycles, boda boda riders were able to hop off.
The woman was rushed to Embu level five hospital, where she is still undergoing treatment.
According to Wangeshi, there has been a rise in traffic accidents on the Embu, Mwea, and Makutano roads because of the poor condition of the road caused by large potholes.
Locals now want KENHA to fix the highway quickly in order to prevent future collisions and casualties.
Kahiro village in Kirinyaga County is in shock following the discovery of a murdered 60-year-old woman’s body 500 meters from her homestead in a coffee plantation.
Esther Wambui Muthike was murdered and ditched in the coffee plantation by unidentified individuals while she was returning home from a Kaharo trading center, according to Karia Sub-location Assistant Chief Joseph Muriithi Githinji.
“I was informed by my two elders and came here immediately and saw the lifeless body of a Wambui whom I know well. The suspects wanted only to kill because even her Ksh.1500 is still in her pocket,” Chief Muriithi stated.
Mary Wamwirua, the deceased’s sister, claims that they learned of her demise from their neighbor, who discovered her body while she was out gathering firewood the night before.
Locals in Kahiro claim that there have previously been incidents in the region.
The body of the deceased was brought to the mortuary at Kerugoya Hospital to await a postmortem.
Moses Koskei, the commander of Ndia Sub-County, verified the incident and stated that police were looking into it. He asked the public to provide law enforcement with helpful information.
Two individuals who were allegedly harassing Mpesa operators in Embu County have been taken into custody.
Evans Ngui and Jackline Mwende were apprehended on Friday after an operation, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), when it was discovered that they had been swiping cards and stealing large amounts of money from victims.
On January 18, 2023, detectives opened an investigation after learning that the two had gone to Kithimu Trading Center and pursued a 49-year-old Mpesa operator there while posing as Safaricom agents.
It is reported that they persuaded the victim to change his till number and that they were able to access his private information as a result.
“Using his details, they installed a Safaricom app in their mobile phone and withdrew Ksh.24,000 from the till, thereafter beetling off,” the statement states in part.
The two were followed to the Ngariama area on January 26. In this location they were taken into custody and taken to the Itabua Police Station.
They will stay detained at the location as investigators move forward with a manhunt to capture further accomplices.
Mpesa operators and other businesspeople have been advised by the head of the Embu County DCI office to exercise cautious as there are many con artists who pose as representatives of respectable companies.

During the course of a two-day operation against car theft syndicates, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have taken eight people into custody and recovered five vehicles that are thought to have been stolen.
The first arrest of the day was Timothy Ndegwa, who was apprehended at his Makongeni Estate residence in Thika, Kiambu County, on Friday. Upon his detention, the registration plate number KBR 957C was found.
The second suspect, George Kimani Wangechi, was apprehended along Kenyatta Road in Juja with a white Toyota Fielder that is thought to have been stolen after Ndegwa directed the detectives to him.
Subsequently, the two accused admitted to working together in stealing a red Isuzu D-Max, which they subsequently sold to a buyer in Nyeri with the help of another accomplice, Stephen Kamau Maganjo.
“After investigative interviewing of the suspects, a fourth accomplice, Boniface Gitemengo Gachanja, was cornered and arrested within Githurai, who led the sleuths to Limuru’s Flyover area where his partner in crime Josphat Ikua Mwangi was arrested, Mwangi was found in possession of a suspected stolen Toyota Corolla fitted with registration no. KBA 163Y. The vehicle was recovered at detained at DCI offices. Later this evening, another of their accomplices, Alois Tabu Ojiambo, was traced to and arrested at Kariobangi,” read the statement.
While operating the car in Naromoru, the aforementioned buyer, Antony Wanjohi Theuri, was apprehended and taken into police custody.
The DCI concluded the Friday operation by noting in a statement to newsrooms that two more of the arrested suspects were apprehended after the arrested ones were subjected to extra strain during questioning.
“The officers ambushed a second renowned suspect, Charles Kung’u Kamau, driving a numberless vehicle make Toyota Probox silver in colour. Search from its Chassis revealed its registration as KBV 958J. Kung’u who has no few antics after occasional confrontations with the law managed to dart away leaving the vehicle, but efforts are on high gear to have him in police custody,” added the DCI.

A man was detained by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday for allegedly selling fake milk powder in Mombasa for around Ksh.1.7 million.
A collaborative sting operation by the Kenya Dairy Board, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the DCI’s Operation Support Unit resulted in the arrest of Ahmed Salah Mohamed.
66 bags of allegedly contraband milk powder were seized by the police during the raid at Mohamed’s business on Mombasa’s Biashara Street.
“The following products were recovered; 41 bags of hilwa full cream milk powder each 25 kg and 25 bags of Brookside full cream milk powder each 25 kg, KRA officials estimated a taxable value of Ksh.1,650,000 on the products, which have since been taken as exhibits at the KRA Changamwe warehouse” the DCI said in a statement on X.
When questioned, Mohamed claimed to have received the fake shipment from a partner called Dahir, whose storage facility is located in Mombasa’s Shimanzi area.
“The said Dahir had been arrested during an earlier operation in Nairobi and investigations are ongoing to trace his Mombasa warehouse for inspection of the stored products,” stated the DCI.
Local manufacturers who depend on the importation of raw materials are suffering as a result of the depreciation of the Kenyan shilling.
East Africa Breweries Limited is one manufacturer that has been impacted by the depreciation of the Kenyan currency. As a result, the company has increased its exports and is searching for ways to expand its operations in foreign markets where foreign currencies are performing better than Kenyan ones.
“We are growing much faster in the market outside of Kenya, so whether it is from an export perspective or from markets just outside Kenya their growth is helping us, one because our currency is now weaker against theirs, but also as they grow then you’re able to mitigate the risk in one territory, compared to another.”
Therefore, we are promoting export growth, growth where we receive foreign exchange revenue, and growth where the environment is still more optimistic than it is at the moment, according to EABL CFO Risper Ohaga.
EABL CEO Jane Karuku states, “Kenya is really suffering whether it’s the pound or it’s the dollar. We are suffering both at the cogs levels I mean cost of goods because we have some dollar pound denominated cost and then also as we report our statutory… Obviously, Tanzania and Uganda are doing better than us from a currency perspective.”
The brewer has voiced concerns about the consumer’s wallet despite increasing their volumes, pointing out that they have chosen lower-value and discounted products in the wake of the challenging macroeconomic environment, which has forced them to reprioritize their expenditures and reduce their expenditure on alcohol by 200 basis points in the first half of the year.
“I think the biggest threat to the business is the consumer’s affordability piece in terms of the wallet contracting, the other one is the cost of doing business, remember I talked about we’ve seen electricity go up, fuel cost go up, so from a Kenyan and across East Africa perspective cost of doing business is going up but more importantly, I think the interest cost and forex cost are stressing the bottom line much more,” added Karuku.
Due to the shilling’s depreciation, EABL reported a Ksh. 2.3 billion loss in foreign exchange pressure during the last half year.
In addition, the brewer suffered a 22% decrease in profit after tax, from Ksh. 8.7 billion to Ksh. 6.8 billion, due to a 21% increase in cost of sales brought on by high inflation that drove up input prices.
While actual sales rose from Ksh.57.3 billion to Ksh.66.5 billion, a 16 percent rise, in the preceding year. The same half of the brewer reported an increase in beer sales of 18%, while spirit sales only increased by 13% due to higher input costs and excise taxes.
