Skipper Otieno: Gor Won’t Relent In Their Title Defense

As they look to defend the top division title, Gor Mahia skipper Philemon Otieno says they won’t let the 10-point lead in the FKF Premier League get to them too much.

Gor’s streak of 19 games without a loss began on Saturday when they defeated Tusker 1-0. However, Otieno believes it is still too early to declare the title fight over.

“We are not trying to get carried away, but that victory against them shows we are heading in the right direction as a team. It was a big win considering they have been our many rivals in recent years,” Otieno remarked.

Otieno has credited collaboration for their undefeated start to the season, noting that effective communication between the players, the bench, the supporters, and the club administration has helped them build an impressive advantage.

“It has been all about proper coordination among all our stakeholders have been supportive to the team and everyone is working hard to make sure they make them proud, our aim is to take one game at a time and hoping that at the end of the season we shall be champions,” he reckoned.

On Saturday, the 20-time league champions will play Kenya Police, who last weekend upset Nzoia FC, the bottom team, 2-0. Otieno believes this matchup would provide a strong test for his team.

“They are a very good side considering the quality of players that they have many of them are familiar with some of us but many things have changed since some of them left and if maintain our tactical discipline in all the department, we are sure we will get maximum points come match day,” he said

DCI Homicide Team Take Over Rita Waeni Case

Tuesday’s planned post-mortem examination of a human head thought to be that of the late Rita Waeni was canceled at Nairobi’s City Mortuary.

Since Waeni’s disfigured body was found in a domestic apartment’s trash bin in Roysambu, Nairobi, on January 14, the case has been handled by Kasarani DCIO. The head was found on Sunday in Kiambaa Dam in Kiambu County.

But on Tuesday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit took over the case and ceased the post-mortem to conduct a forensic examination of the head that had been retrieved.

Following their apprehension in a rented apartment in Ndenderu, Kiambu County, two Nigerian nationals wanted in relation with Waeni’s death were arraigned on Monday.

During the two’s arrest, Kasarani DCI officers found a butcher’s knife and hatchet, six cell phones, multiple SIM cards, three laptop computers, and a Kenyan identity card.

According to the police, their investigations showed that the two had entered Kenya illegally.

Since then, Waeni’s family has disclosed that at 5 a.m. on the Sunday after her body parts were discovered, her father received a message from her phone number requesting Ksh. 500,000 in ransom to be paid within 24 hours in order to free her daughter. Waeni is a 20-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

IS THERE A MARKET FOR IT?

Sometimes, your business idea may seem like a great solution. But it won’t succeed if you are the only one who sees it as such.

If you are unable to identify a customer base beyond yourself, then it’s a warning sign that your idea will most likely fail.

To assess the marketability of your business idea, you need to conduct extensive market research and find out if people would be interested in your proposed product or service.

How big is the current market for your proposed business idea?

Is it an emerging market or a mature one?

Are you in a new or mature category?

Who are your potential customers?

Do they really need your proposed product or service?

What is the competition like?

You can answer these questions by conducting online research, meeting with industry players, networking with others, and attending trade shows and exhibitions.

Your answers will give you a big advantage in getting a handle on the opportunities within the market. They will also help you figure out if your initial assumptions about your proposed product or service are true.

No matter how brilliant your idea may be, only paying customers can validate it and determine if it has great chances of success.

Your “brilliant” business idea remains “just an idea” until you have paying customers attached to it. While anyone can discredit a simple idea, no one can discredit paying customers.

If you have been reading our series of business ideas articles in our PROFITABLE BUSINESS IDEAS Whatsapp Group, well, we hope you have already found that one idea that you would like to turn into a business.

Congratulations! But before you rush to invest there is just one more thing you need to do – a FEASIBILITY STUDY.

What is a Feasibility Study?

A feasibility study is simply an assessment of the practicality of your proposed business idea. For instance, if your business idea is about Watermelon farming then your feasibility study will involve determining the capital requirements, competition and market availability.

For example, if you are a farmer in Kilifi, Kenya, you will want to understand the market situation for your cashew nuts business. Likewise, if you are preparing to start a milk supply business in Nairobi you have to get the inside scoop of the business before you start.

This is the most important study you will ever have to do in your life. And you don’t have to hire an expert to do it for you… we have broken it down into three super easy steps.

Step One: Analyze The Business Idea

This should always be the very first stage of your study. Look objectively at your idea and determine how lucrative it is. This is how you do it:

  1. Potential Market Size

Let us say you have picked the idea of supplying kerosene lamps. At this stage, you need to ask yourself if there is market for your commodity and if yes, how big it is.

  1. Competitive Advantage

What makes you a worthy competitor in the market? Do you have more experience than other players in the industry? In other words you want to figure out what makes you unique in a potentially crowded market place. Also, find out if anyone else have tried your idea, and if they failed – why?

  1. Assess Capital Requirements

Luckily for you, most of the business ideas we post in our PROFITABLE BUSINESS IDEAS Whatsapp group gives a rough breakdown and capital estimate for each idea. But besides that, you need to do your own research to get the real picture. Keep a small notebook where you can note all the specific cost outline down.

Step Two: A Deeper Analysis of the Market

Now that you are satisfied that your idea is a good one, it’s time to take a closer look at the market. You goal at this stage is to determine what exactly the market needs and how they want it done.

1. Find the Differentiating Factor

A differentiating factor is simply that one thing that makes you attractive to customers. Ask yourself, why will customers want to purchase my product or service instead of my competitors?

Is it because I can deliver faster than others or is it because I have better pricing methodology? What gap have your competitors left so that you can fill? Once you add a differentiating factor to your product or service, you will have an easier time penetrating the market.

2. Market Barriers Analysis

A market barrier is something that prevents you from entering a certain field of business at any one time. For instance, there is a barrier to starting a chemist shop since you have to get the approval of the Pharmacy and Poisons Boards. Look within your industry and see if there are any barriers that bar you from entering. Luckily, most business fields don’t have barriers to entry.

3. What Makes Your Competitors Successful?

In every business there are competitors and learning what makes them successful is the surest way to get an inside scoop of the market conditions of your idea. So once again, keep a closer eye on your potential competitors so that you can fine-tune your game-plan.

Step Three: Financial Feasibility Analysis

By now, given that you have done idea analysis and a bit of market survey, we assume you have sufficient information on the nitty-gritty of running your business. So let’s now show you how to do the very last stages of a feasibility study.

Estimate The Start-up Cost

The start-up cost comprises the cost of setting up the business (e.g. renting a room, painting it, branding it etc.) and the initial working capital (i.e. the money you put into the business). Determine if your savings will be sufficient to start the business. If not, then think of external sources of capital.

Basically, the entire cost of starting up should be made up of:

-Cost of setting up the shop/office/working area

-Cost of buying new equipment (e.g. popcorn machine, printer, wheelbarrow etc.)

-Cost of acquiring licenses and certificates (e.g. Single business permit, hygiene certificates among others)

The working capital comprises of:

-Cost of buying raw materials (e.g. braids for a salon, grocery for a restaurant etc.) and other ingredients

-Cost of initial promotion of the business (For instance, you can choose to start your business with an offer price)

-If you are going to hire any members of staff, you might incur some amount to train them

How Viable Is My Business Idea?

An idea is only viable if and only if (1) There is market for it (2) You have figured out how to finance it either through your savings or loan (3) You have a differentiating factor that sets you ahead of the competition (4) You are passionate about it (5) You are ready to be patient with it.

Keep in mind that some ideas may not be as lucrative from the onset. In fact in some cases you may even have to wait for 2 years in order for your business to start repaying you.

Before you invest your money in any business idea, it is always wise to do a feasibility study. Sometimes this small measure of security can help you save a lot of cash that would otherwise be wasted chasing the wind – like most people do!

HOW GREAT BUSINESS IDEAS ARE BORN

First, find your passion.

Take a pen and paper and list five to ten things about yourself. What do you like to do? What are you good at?

No matter how personal it is, like “I love kids” write it down. Whatever comes to mind that you love to do and would do for free, jot it down.

Think about how you could turn these things into a business. For example, if you are passionate about healthy living and spend your free time researching recipes, finding new ways to work out and read up on the newest health trends, that is an idea. Start a blog or coaching business with your expertise.

You could also look at your past jobs and analyze what you liked and didn’t like in your role. Think of industries and types of businesses that would allow you to do more of what you like.

For example, if you loved working with people in your customer service job, why not build a coaching or consulting business?

Michael Bloomberg became the richest man in media when he used the financial know-how and information technology expertise he developed as an employee at Salomon to create the Bloomberg terminal software system.

Think about making life easier.

All great businesses have one thing in common: they address a real need.

An idea could come from something that bothers you and your community or something that could make your life easier. Think about what you are facing and ask yourself these set of questions.

Why exactly do I think it is a problem?

What do I usually do when I have these problems?

What can be a solution to this problem?

Can I use this solution in exchange for some money?

How many people might have the same issue?

Will they be willing to pay money in exchange for solving this problem?

Answering these questions will give you a business idea, or many. Great entrepreneurs see the world as a collection of problems to be solved.

Do the opposite.

You might think that everything good is already created and you cannot think of anything better. This is not quite true.

Let’s say you want to come up with the business idea in a certain field, which is a field of your competence. Think of the brands that are the best in your field and try to think about the opposite of it and why it can be attractive to customers.

Take the airlines as an example, for a very long time flying from one country to another was very expensive and was considered to be a luxury experience. The brands have been emphasizing the luxury, exclusivity and great flying experience. However, now there are a lot of budget airlines that did nothing more than offer the opposite – cheap experience.

Don’t reinvent the wheel, redesign it.

One of the biggest mistakes budding entrepreneurs make is thinking that they need to innovate to be successful.

Think of Paul Brown in 1991 who came up with a smart idea that was later used by Heinz to solve a simple problem of how to get Ketchup out of the bottle.

Brown wanted to create a dispensing valve for a new kind of shampoo bottle, so that the bottle could be stored on an edge of a bathroom tub without dripping. Brown created a little silicone dome with right angle slits in it. When the sides of the bottle were pressed, the dome’s slits opened. When the pressing stopped, the air that was sucked back into the dome caused it to retract. In 1995, Brown sold his company for about $13 million.

Think of the products that exist independently, and how they can be mixed together or applied elsewhere. Simply combine two things that already exist. For example, the very popular Red Bull Vodka was created by merging two already popular products.

Import your ideas.

In 1984, Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian who was traveling through Thailand, drank a bottle of Krating Daeng, an energy drink popular with the country’s public transportation drivers and other workers enduring long working hours. When Mateschitz’ jet lag was cured by the small drink, he set up a company in Austria to sell it. We now know Krating Daeng as Red Bull.

Same happened with StarBucks. On a business trip to Italy, Howard Schultz became fascinated with the country’s coffee house culture, which emphasized the relationship between the barista and the customer. Schultz returned to the United States and convinced the Starbucks founders to test the Italian coffee house concept.

If you have the means or opportunity, travel and travel widely and find a way to recreate them at home. You can even do it locally. Take an idea that is fascinating in Nairobi CBD and see if you can implement it in your estate at home.

The idea could be right under your nose

Becoming a trends hound is another effective way of getting ideas. Look at the trending topics on Social Media Sites like Twitter, Reddit, Buzzfeed, YouTube etc.

If you are able to jump onto trending topics fast enough by creating or reselling related products or services, you can build a valid business.

Becoming a trend spotter yourself is as easy as reading widely. Pick an industry that interests you and spend a couple of months reading everything about it.

Do it until you get to the point where you are able to spot and predict upcoming trends yourself. By expanding your knowledge, you are expanding your realm of business ideas.

Authorities Find Butcher Knife at Nigerian Men’s House Connected to Rita Waeni’s Murder

Detectives will be tasked with solving the cold-blooded murder for eight days as they hold two Nigerian nationals who were detained in connection with the horrific murder and mutilation of Rita Waeni, a Kenyan woman.

One week after the murder at a rented apartment in Roysambu, the two suspects, William Ovie Opia and John Bull Asibor, were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate of Makadara Law Courts on Monday.

The two were taken into custody in a rented apartment in Ndenderu, Kiambu county, according to a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer based at the Kasarani police station.

During their arrests, detectives found numerous important items, including three laptop computers, six cell phones, and a hatchet and butcher knife.

An variety of SIM cards from Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom were also found, along with Omar Mwamkwaju Juma’s Kenyan identity card.

The two suspects’ unlawful immigration to Kenya has been further disclosed by investigations.

The cops discovered that one of the suspects, Opia, had an expired passport on him, but Asibor, his accomplice, blithely stated that he had misplaced his passport last year.

Opia claimed to have bought the hatchet for his “own protection” from an internet merchant, according to the investigators.

KMPDU Issues 21-Day Strike Notice

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has been issued with a 21-day strike notice by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) for violating the terms of its signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, speaking to the media in Eldoret town, charged that the county government management was frustrating consultants by paying salaries equivalent to those of interns.

According to Atellah, the county government has also ceased paying medical professionals’ salaries, leaving them to make ends meet while they are at work.

In addition, he stated that they are in the process of finalizing a new CBA with the doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) because of issues they are facing, including discrimination and having been under the same contract for an excessive amount of time.

Hilarious Tiktok Trend ‘Mimi Ni Mzabibu’ Sweeping The Kenyan Internet

A recent Tiktok trend called “Mzabibu” is rapidly taking over the internet as Kenyans show off their most bizarre choreography to the upbeat drum beat of the tune.

The Mijikenda artist Zablon K. Ndale’s song “Mzabibu,” which debuted a few days prior to the weekend, is the inspiration for the trend.

The craziest motions are displayed by the dancers when the chorus begins. Wearing strange clothing, they make sure to jerk and bend over while executing exaggerated hip and arm movements as the beat continues.

Hundreds of users rapidly took over the challenge, which was started by a female Tiktok user going by the handle @aggie.kamau, who can be seen dancing inside a kiosk. One user who really helped popularize the unconventional dance routines was @official_mickey_.

Wearing green slacks and an olive shirt, Mickey shuffles around in a humorous manner as the song picks up speed. He makes a lot of gestures and kicks around his feet.

Thousands of Kenyans have so far shared their own takes on the viral challenge; some participate in it while shirtless, while others do it inside of schools.

The trick is to act as though you are in the early 1970s. And from there, everything gets crazier.

Well-known for her amiability, First Daughter Charlene Ruto took up the challenge and, predictably, did not let it down.

The chorus of the song is: “Mimi ni mzabibuu, baba ni mkurimaa, nanwi mmatai shalaani matunda kisha gakule…”

“I am the vine, and the father is the farmer, and you are the branches,” reads the rich Mijikenda lyrics when translated. Thus, produce fruit.”

In the four days since it was released, the song has amassed an astounding 19k views on YouTube.

You should be at your silliest to completely ace the task. Choose the stupidest attire, make the silliest expression, move your body in the most hilarious way, and, if at all possible, find it in yourself to go the additional mile in seeming utterly foolish.
