Namibia President Geingob passes away at 82

At Lady Pohamba Hospital on Sunday, February 4, 2024, President Hage G. Geingob passed away, leaving Namibia in sorrow.

Around 12:04 am, the 82-year-old leader passed away from cancer, encircled by his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and kids.

Delivering the depressing news, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba expressed profound grief, saying, “It is with the deepest sadness that I notify you that our dear Dr. Hage G. Geingob has gone away. Unfortunately, President Geingob could not make a full recovery despite the feverish efforts of his medical team.”

On January 31, 2024, President Geingob returned from the United States of America after receiving a two-day experimental treatment for cancerous cells.

Only a month prior, he had bravely told the public about his diagnosis.

After taking office in 2015, Geingob was in his second and last term. He was a key player in the independence war and the main drafter of Namibia’s Constitution.

Vice President Mbumba praised him, calling him the cornerstone of the Namibian household and a great servant of the people.

Following this devastating loss, Vice President Mbumba urged calm throughout the country.

“At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations, and other protocols,” Mbumba stated.

During this time of grief, Cabinet will meet as soon as possible to discuss the essential state arrangements. Additionally, announcements will be made to keep the nation updated.

Namibia pays tribute to President Geingob’s legacy, a statesman who devoted his entire life to serving the country.

President Ruto: “No child should be sent home over school fees.”

President William Ruto

President William Ruto has cautioned school administrators once more against sending students home for unpaid fees.

Speaking in Kakamega, Ruto stated that since the government has already given schools Sh7.5 billion, no child should be sent home.

The Head of State stated unequivocally that nobody has the power to send JSS students home.

“Our children especially those in the Junior Secondary Schools, there are some fishy happenings going on in these schools. Some children go to school and are told mambo ni mawili, there is JSS money that has not been sent, go home and bring your fees. I want to announce here that my administration has disbursed Sh7.5 billion to go towards the JSS learning fees,” Ruto stated.

Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, declared last month that teams will be dispatched nationwide to look into JSS that were collecting parents fees.

According to the CS, JSS should be provided without charge, and no parent should have to pay even a single penny to enroll their child in a JSS public institution.

According to Machogu, he issued a warning and instructed County Directors of Education to follow a circular regarding JSS being free.

He mentioned that Sh7.5 billion had been allocated by the government for junior secondary schools, with an additional Sh16 billion going to secondary schools and Sh4.7 billion for primary schools.

“I have constituted a team that will go around the country because there are a few con people who want to go against government directive that no fee should be charged at JSS level Kenyans, if there is anyone who will con you by charging you even a shilling, they will be sent home. I won’t allow the President to fire me because of a few who don’t want to do their work as instructed,” CS Machogu said.

South Africa makes it to the AFCON semifinals thanks to Ronwen Williams’ heroics.

In a stunning turn of events on Saturday, Ronwen Williams emerged as the night’s hero as South Africa defeated Cape Verde in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout to earn a position in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinals.

Williams led South Africa to win by becoming the first goalie in AFCON history to save four penalties in a single game.

On the 28th anniversary of South Africa’s 1996 continental victory, the quarterfinal match featured a tenacious Bafana Bafana team under coach Hugo Broos.

Inspired by their triumph over tournament favorites Morocco, the team demonstrated a winning formula that was evocative of Broos’s 2019 triumph with Cameroon.

With Garry Rodrigues posing a threat to the South African defense, both sides entered the encounter with caution.

But Williams’ alertness kept Rodrigues at bay by making vital saves throughout the match.

The approach of Cape Verde to settle the tie through penalties was suggested by the withdrawal of key players.

As the game got closer, Vozinha, the goalie for Cape Verde, frequently stopped South Africa from scoring.

Williams, though, took center stage as he saved three straight penalties in the shootout to send South Africa to the semifinals.

The win presents Bafana Bafana with the chance to continue their AFCON campaign and sets up an intriguing semifinal matchup against Nigeria.

South Africa now dreams of continental triumph after Williams’ incredible performance cemented his reputation in the annals of football history.

A crucial part of securing a goalless draw against Cape Verde was Captain Ronwen Williams’ heroics, which included an incredible fingertip save.

Williams demonstrated his extraordinary abilities by denying Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte, and Patrick Andrade in the ensuing penalty shootout.

The game was marked by a lot of bad finishing, with both teams missing chances in normal time.

Williams’ incredible fingertip save to deny Gilson Benchimol’s attempt demonstrated his exceptional reflexes and cemented his place among the best goalkeepers.

Seeking revenge for their 2000 loss, South Africa will now take on Nigeria in the semifinals.

The senior women’s 10km event was won by Anyango, the second-fastest woman over 10km, in 32:55. Joyciline Jepkosgei, a former world record holder for marathons, came in second with 33:10, and Catherine Reline came in third with 33:18.

In preparation for the 2024 Barcelona Half Marathon on February 11, Jepkosgei was using the event as part of her speed training regimen.

“I was supposed to do speed work today in preparation for the Barcelona Half Marathon scheduled for next week. This was a good speed work test for me,” said Jepkosgei.

Simiu claimed that although he nearly got a stitch in the second loop, he was still able to win.

“I almost dropped out but my coach (Erick Kibet) motivated me to hold on and finish the race. This is my second event of the year in the country, after the National Police cross country championships, this shows that I am ready to face the world,” said Simiu.

Ishmael Kipkurui, the World Under-20 Cross Country champion, finished second with a time of 29:18, behind him. For the bronze, Weldon Langat had a time of 29:26.

Kipkirui, who came in second, mentioned a quick way that favored Simiu, who had more experience.

African Cross Country relay team selection took place over a 2km loop won by Purity Jepkirui and World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Former 800m world under-20 champion Wanyonyi declared, “I am happy with my performance.” I have not decided which race I will start as the winner.”

Wanyonyi defeated Edwin Kiprono (95:45.9) and Victor Kipkirui (5:42.1) to win the title in 5:41.2.

Langat stated: “I am motivated by today’s performance. It tells me I can do well in the 800m.”

In the last six months, China approved more than 40 AI models for public use.

As the country works to catch up to the United States in AI development, China has authorized more than 40 artificial intelligence (AI) models for public use in the first six months after authorities started the licensing process, according to Chinese media.

According to Chinese state-backed Securities Times, 14 large language models (LLM) were approved by Chinese regulators last week for usage by the general public. This represents the fourth round of approvals that China has given, with recipients including Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK), opens new tab, 4Paradigm (6682.HK), opens new tab, and 01.AI.

In August of last year, Beijing began to require tech companies to get regulatory approval before opening their LLMs to the public. It emphasized how China is working to advance AI technology while attempting to maintain control over it.

Soon after the certification method was adopted, in August, Beijing approved its first batch of AI models. Among the first Chinese firms to gain authorization were Baidu (9888.HK), Alibaba (9988.HK), and ByteDance (opens new tab).

Before another batch was approved this month, Chinese regulators approved two more batches in November and December. Securities Times reported on Sunday that more than 40 AI models have been certified, despite the government not disclosing the precise list of companies that have been approved and are available for public scrutiny.

Since OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT became widely popular in 2022, Chinese firms have been racing to develop AI products.

Italian Authorities: ChatGPT Breached Privacy Rules

OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has been charged by Italian authorities with violating EU data protection laws. The US company has been given 30 days to respond to the charges.

The firm that created ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence platform, OpenAI, has been “notified of breaches of data protection law,” according to a statement released on Monday by Italy’s data protection agency.

Last year, the watchdog—which was the first in the West to do so—blocked the well-known chatbot for a few weeks.

The European Union’s general data protection rule, referred to as the EU GDPR, was found to have been violated, according to the watchdog’s conclusion, which was based on the “available evidence.”

“OpenAI may submit its counterclaims concerning the alleged breaches within 30 days.”

The watchdog stated that it will “take account of the work in progress” by a task force established by the EU’s primary data regulator to assist nations in addressing ChatGPT-related issues when rendering a final decision in the matter.

The Italian watchdog declared last year that OpenAI lacked a legitimate reason to be collecting and storing a large amount of personal information in order to train the algorithms that underpin ChatGPT.

It also brought attention to the ambiguity around whose data was being gathered.

“We believe our practices align with GDPR and other privacy laws, and we take additional steps to protect people’s data and privacy,” the statement from OpenAI read.

“We want our AI to learn about the world, not about private individuals,” OpenAI said, adding that the company plans “to continue to work constructively” with the Italian authority.
