Confounding information about the blatant escape of Nairobi’s Muthaiga Police Station murder suspect Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe has surfaced.

Before fleeing to his native Kenya, Kang’ethe is alleged to have brutally murdered his lover in a US airport.

The bold escape occurred on Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m., in front of the station commander, who only heard a disturbance as her officers tried to pursue the fleeing Kang’ethe, according to a police report that has left the nation’s security apparatus on the spot.

The report states that at approximately 4 p.m., a man known as John Maina Ndegwa showed up at the station and identified himself to the officers as Kang’ethe’s personal lawyer, expressing his want to speak with his client.

The police allegedly complied with the request and removed the suspect from the cells, putting him in the anti-crime office number three alone with his “lawyer.”

“After a short while the prisoner escaped by running away and left the lawyer behind. At the time of the escape the station commander Chief Inspector Esther Muchomba was chairing a meeting/lecture with all the Anti-crime personnel and members of inspectorate while at her office, she was alerted by a loud noise of officers who were chasing the prisoner along Thika Super Highway but they did not manage to re-arrest him,” reads the report in part.

It’s unclear how the suspect managed to outwit armed officers in broad daylight.

Since then, four police officers who were on duty—Ann Wanjiku, a station guard; Elijah Kipkiror, a cell sentry; James Maina [ report ] and Hassan Saman, a station guard—have been placed under arrest while they are being questioned about the event.

John Maina Ndegwa, the counsel, is detained by the police as well.

Kang’ethe is suspected of killing a 31-year-old Whitman, Massachusetts resident who was born in Kenya. Her body was found in November of last year inside a car at Boston’s Logan Airport.

When investigators presented Kang’ethe in court after his arrest in Nairobi on a miscellaneous application, they were given 30 days to hold him while they decided whether to extradite him to the US, where he is sought for murder.

The Motorists Association of Kenya is adamantly against tolls being imposed on the nation’s main highways.

The group describes the action as “pure shameless determination by the Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen,” arguing that it amounts to doubly taxing a population that is already subject to excessive taxes.

“As an association and stakeholders, we have decided in our meeting that we are not going to allow our roads to be turned into private roads,” stated association chairperson Peter Murima.

“The rate at which things are taking place in this nation is taking driving into another level,” stated David Muchai, a spokesman of private motorists. Driving will either turn into a criminal activity or become prohibitively expensive for the general populace.

The association claims that having road maintenance fees in addition to toll highways at the same time is equivalent to double taxation.

It also claims that toll roads will cause traffic jams on main highways.

The association, who has bemoaned the poor condition of the majority of the alternate routes, has not been pleased with the alternative usage of feeder roads for individuals who do not wish to pay.

“You cannot use already existing roads and turn them into private run roads. That is the procedure world over. That will be unconstitutional, it will impede on the freedom of movement,” Murima continued.

Furthermore, the group claims that the high cost of fuel, along with the government-to-government fuel acquisition agreement and what it refers to as a “vague fuel pricing formula,” have forced the transport sector to contract.

“The Matatu sector has been abused in this country; we are being overtaxed to the point where if you do some rounds you’ll find that most of the vehicles are being repossessed by financiers,” continued John Katimbwa, Chairperson of the Matatu Welfare Association.

The group, which represents all drivers under one roof—including those who operate cabs, trucks, and matatus—gave the government a 21-day ultimatum, failing which the industry will cease operations in protest of the dire state of the business environment.

Stakeholders in the transportation sector claim that the camel’s back is broken. The motorists organization claims that a number of variables, including county cess taxes, an increase in fuel VAT, and the recently proposed introduction of toll fee, could potentially tip the industry over the edge.

Wilson Sossion, the former secretary general of the Kenyan National Union of Teachers, has defended the government’s decision to switch to e-Citizen for school fees.

According to Sossion, the switch from cash payments to e-citizen for learners school fees in national schools will eradicate corruption.

The lawmaker claimed in a Monday interview that the e-citizen platform was put in place to promote transparency.

Additionally, Sossion stated that by using the platform, parents will no longer be subject to indirect fees that are not covered by fee structures and are imposed by schools.

He claims that one of these indirect charges is the school uniforms, for which parents have been duped into paying outrageous prices.

Sossion claims that the indirect costs are starting to prevent people from accessing educational opportunities.

He clarified that the move’s incomplete explanation is the source of the opposition to its implementation.

Using KWS as an example, Sossion added that the e-citizen platform has increased income collection in other sectors.

According to Sossion, Kenyans must accept the system because using it is a simple and efficient process.

He thinks parents and students will find the system more convenient.

To expedite the onboarding process, all national school principals received a directive from Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang on January 31, 2024, instructing them to provide the institution’s bank account details.

At State House in Nairobi, President William Ruto will have a meeting with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda.

On a two-day state visit, the visiting president arrived in Kenya on Sunday with his wife, Agata Kornhauser-Duda.

Rwanda and Tanzania are on his itinerary as he begins his week-long trip to Africa in Kenya.

“President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda together with his Spouse Agata Kornhauser–Duda will pay state visits on 5–6 February 2024 (Monday–Tuesday) to the Republic of Kenya, followed by state visits on 6–8 February 2024 (Tuesday–Thursday) to the Republic of Rwanda and on 8–9 February 2024 (Thursday–Friday) to the United Republic of Tanzania,” Poland Presidency said in a statement. 

President Ruto and First Lady Rachael Ruto will formally welcome the two at State House in Nairobi.

The two presidents’ discussions and the discussions between the delegations led by Ruto and Duda will take place afterwards.

Before the presidents address the media, there will be a bilateral document signing ceremony in their presence.

The Polish-Kenyan High-Level Economic Dialogue will take place at a downtown hotel, with an official luncheon hosted by President Ruto and the First Lady preceding it. Both leaders are anticipated to give a speech during the event.

The Polish president will later participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument in Uhuru Gardens Park, followed by a meeting with members of the Polish community and a state-decoration ceremony at the ambassador’s residence.

In Kiambu County, the Polish leader is also anticipated to visit the Fire and Rescue Training Center on Tuesday before departing for a two-day visit to Rwanda and then Tanzania for a similar duration.
