Homa Bay: Man Handed Life Sentence For Defiling 11-Year-Old Child

A 54-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison by a Homa Bay court on Friday for defiling an 11-year-old girl almost four years prior.

In August 2020, Samuel Odie appeared before Ndhiwa Law Courts Resident Magistrate Murangasia and was indicted with the offense in Luanda village.

Six witnesses were called by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), under the direction of Moses Okerosi, to testify against the defendants in the case.

Anxiety As Kenyan Banks Set To Begin Providing KRA Access To Customer Data

Kenyan commercial banks have begun to apply the 2023 tax processes legislation known as Common Reporting Standards (CRS).

As the taxman ramps up its attempts to apprehend tax evaders and beneficiaries of illegal money, this rule mandates all Kenyan banks, trusts, and other financial institutions to record and exchange information about overseas account holders with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Customers are anxious about their exposure after hearing this announcement.

In response to questions from Citizen TV, the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) claims that the taxman has asked for information on account stakeholders, address, jurisdiction, domicile, tax identification number (such as the Personal Identification Number or functional equivalent), date of birth, and place of birth.

Additionally, banks will be required to turn over the value of their accounts, including their cash value or surrender value for annuities or cash value insurance contracts, respectively.

Aside from the total gross amount of interest, dividends, and other income related to assets held in the account, they will also be required to submit the amount paid or credited to the account for each calendar year, as well as the total gross proceeds from the sale or redemption of financial assets during that year or any other reporting period in which the financial institution served as a custodian, broker, nominee, or in some other capacity as an agent for the account holder for custodial accounts.

According to the bankers association, all data will be electronically sent in the format required by the taxman and with technology approved or supplied by the commissioner (KRA) to guarantee data security as mandated by regulations.

“Sharing of customer’s data under CRS framework is in accordance with the provisions of Data Protection Act section 25 that provides for principles and obligations of personal data protection as well as Section 48 that provides for conditions to transfer of personal data outside Kenya,” states the association.

In order to assure compliance with the legislation, the bankers’ umbrella organization now states that they will also need to update details of pre-existing accounts. They warn that this could result in a rise in the cost of compliance for banks and other RFIs.

Man Detained After Supposedly Opening Aircraft Door and Activating Evacuation Slide

Before takeoff, a commercial plane’s door was allegedly opened and the evacuation slide activated, leading to the arrest of a Canadian man in Chiang Mai, in northern Thai city.

The event happened on the evening of February 7, according to a statement from the Chiang Mai International Airport.

According to reports, around 10:05 p.m., the air traffic control tower received word that Thai Airways flight TG121, which was scheduled to take off for Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, was lined up on the runway ready to take off when a passenger opened one of the plane’s doors, triggering the deployment of an evacuation slide.

According to the statement, more flights were briefly barred from taking off and landing because the Airbus A320 could not be moved right away.

“After receiving the alert, we reached out to Thai Airways mechanics to get into the site to cut the evacuation slide off, then we towed the aircraft back to landing pit number 15,” said Wing Commander Ronnakorn Chalermsanyakorn, director of Chiang Mai International Airport, in the statement.

Eight of the 13 flights that were impacted by the event were made to circle in the air before being given the all-clear to land, the director continued. According to Ronnakorn, 2,295 passengers were impacted by the delays overall.

In reaction to the incident, Thai Airways released a statement in which it stated that the delayed flight eventually took off for Bangkok around midnight after mechanics were able to repair and inspect the door in compliance with safety rules.

Chiang Mai Police The officer in charge of the case, Colonel Manuschai In-thuean, told CNN that they detained 40-year-old Canadian national Wong Sai Heung right there on the spot.

If found guilty, he might be sentenced to death, up to 20 years in jail, and/or a fine of 600,000–800,000 baht ($16,700–$22,300). It should be noted, though, that Thailand has not executed a prisoner since 2018.

Although they did not know why the suspect opened the door, the police did observe that he seemed agitated and was challenging to talk to.

As required by law, police informed CNN that they gave the suspect legal representation and a translator during questioning, and they are still looking into the incident.

Monica Kimani Murder Case: Jacque Maribe Acquitted As Jowie Found Guilty

In September 2018, businesswoman Monica Kimani was found murdered and Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie has been found guilty.

“Having considered the evidence in this matter it is the finding of this court that the prosecution has adduced adequate evidence and has met the threshold…. It is the finding of this court that the first accused person murdered the deceased,” ruled justice Grace Nzioka.

The murder charge against former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was charged with Irungu, has been dropped.

“It is my considered view that the charge brought against the second accused person (Jacque Maribe) was not the proper charge,” Justice Nzioka declared regarding Maribe.

Kevin Kang’ethe Escape: Four Police Officers Interdicted, Two Transferred

Four police officers have been placed under arrest after wanted murder suspect Kelvin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe broke free from custody while they were on duty at the Muthaiga Police Station.

At a press conference on Friday, Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei announced that two more officers in charge of the four officers in question had been sent to different duty stations as part of internal disciplinary actions.

Bungei further disclosed that John Ndegwa Maina, Kang’ethe’s attorney, is still being held by the police. Shortly after Kang’ethe’s escape on Wednesday, February 7, at approximately 530 p.m., Maina was taken into custody at Muthaiga Police Station.

Following the incident, questions were raised over the legitimacy of his status as Kang’ethe’s lawyer. However, on Friday, Bungei revealed that initial investigations had confirmed the legitimacy of his identity as the suspect’s genuine legal lawyer.

Prior to his escape, Maina is said to have gone to Kang’ethe four times while acting as his lawyer.

Kang’ethe is charged with the murder of a 31-year-old Whitman, Massachusetts resident who was born in Kenya. Her body was found in November of last year inside a car at Boston’s Logan Airport.

Kang’ethe was brought before the court on a miscellaneous motion after his arrest in Nairobi, where investigators were given permission to hold him for 30 days while their investigations were ongoing.

When the court detained him in the Muthaiga police station, it saw that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (ODPP) appeal regarding the nature of the offense had received no opposition.

The DPP also informed the court that a number of applications needed to be filed, one of which was for his extradition to the United States, where he is wanted for murder.
