Volkswagen Recals Over 200k Cars Due To Fire Risk

In the US, Volkswagen is recalling over 260,000 small cars due to a fuel leak that might potentially spark a fire from a pump inside the fuel tank.

The vehicles in question are a variety of 2015–2020 model year Volkswagen Golf, Golf GTI, Golf Sportwagen, Jetta, and Audi A3 vehicles. Not all of those vehicles’ model years are included, and only front-wheel drive—not all-wheel drive—versions are covered. VW’s premium brand is Audi, and these are all quite similar cars.

Fuel may build up in the system intended to capture gasoline vapors due to a seal around a suction pump near the gas tank that was not correctly built. Fuel may then seep out of the vehicle from that point on. A fire may ignite if gasoline comes into touch with a spark or another source of ignition. According to VW, there haven’t been any fires as a result of this issue yet.

Starting in mid-April, owners of vehicles covered by the recall will receive letters from Volkswagen. Owners will be told to bring their car to a dealership so that the dealership would replace the pump for free.

Documents in Volkswagen’s recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that some of these vehicles were also part of a 2016 recall for the same problem; however, the replacement fuel pump fitted at the time did not completely cure the issue.

Owners of cars can find out if their particular vehicle is involved by visiting the Safecar.gov website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, owners can contact Audi customer support at 800-253-2834 or Volkswagen customer service at 800-893-5298.

The Finance Act of 2023’s ongoing Tax Amnesty Program has received a significant reaction from taxpayers, according to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

KRA said on February 20, 2024, that 227,071 taxpayers have benefited from the effort as a whole, with a total waiver of Ksh. 209 billion in fines and interest.

The Tax Amnesty Programme allows taxpayers to apply for the waiver of penalties and interest accrued on overdue taxes up to December 31st, 2022. It began on September 1st, 2023, and ends on June 30th, 2024. By June 30th, 2024, taxpayers must have fully settled their principal taxes in order to be eligible for the amnesty.

“KRA reminds Taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes to take advantage of the amnesty programme. Further, Taxpayers who have not filed their returns for the amnesty period are urged to file the returns in order to benefit from the Tax Amnesty Programme,” the taxman stated in a statement on Tuesday.

KRA invites taxpayers involved in ongoing disputes to think about utilizing the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) framework in an effort to speed up the resolution of tax issues.

“This (out-of-court settlement) will enable them take advantage of the ongoing Tax Amnesty, noting that the provisions on waiver of penalties and interest and on abandonment of taxes, were repealed by the Finance Act, 2023,” added KRA.

IG, NPSC in clash over hiring millions

The National Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police both claimed funds for hiring law enforcement officials, which caused drama in Parliament on Friday.

Internal conflicts between the two agencies were hinted at on Friday when Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and NPSC Chief Executive Peter Lely presented rival budget lines to Members of Parliament.

Regarding how to interpret their respective mandates, the commission and the National Police Service (NPS) had been involved in numerous disputes.

Citing Article 246 of the Constitution, which gives the commission the authority to hire law enforcement, Leley begged MPs to grant the commission Sh150 million for the purpose of recruiting police officers.

According to the Constitution, the NPSC is tasked with managing the National Police Service members’ human resources.

Leley disputed NPS’s assertion regarding the hiring, arguing that the Inspector General ought to limit his responsibilities to operational duties.

Based on approximations, the agency plans to hire 10,000 constables for the police at a cost of Sh150 million.

After both presented their cases for the recruiting budget, MPs wondered who they should deal with.

Rosa Buyu, the MP for Kisumu West, questioned the committee on who should be involved in the hiring budget shared by the two institutions.

The goal of the recruitment is to close any gaps and NPS deficiencies brought on by natural attrition and exits.

The budgets as stated in the Budget Policy Statement 2024 were being defended by Koome and Lelely.

According to Koome, the El Nino disaster prevented the service from hiring during the previous fiscal year, necessitating a rerouting of the hiring budget in order to address the threat.

Additionally, he made a case for the budget deficit, pointing out that it has caused several of the industry’s most important initiatives to be stalled over time.

NPS records indicate that Sh114.29 billion, Sh122.41 billion, and Sh135.34 billion have been allotted for the fiscal years 2024–2025, 2025–2026, and 2026–2027.

This is in opposition to the corresponding resource requirements of Sh171.89 billion, Sh171.93 billion, and Sh173.48 billion.

TSC In Plans To Export Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is negotiating on behalf of tutors seeking employment overseas with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor, among other relevant parties.

According to TSC Director of Legal Calvin Anyuor, Kenya has an excess of teachers, therefore getting them a chance overseas will be wise.

Because we have more teachers than we need in the nation, we have begun collaborating with important stakeholders to export the teaching resource.

“We are engaging Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant government agencies so that our teachers can go and teach English in Germany,” Anyuor said.

Anyuor continued by saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is attempting to guarantee the country’s teachers a place in the market abroad.

For the thousands of teachers who have yet to get job offers from TSC, this is a relief.

Ensuring teachers graduating from different training colleges have the appropriate level of education will be a major responsibility of the Commission.

TSC currently employs over 400,000 teachers, and by the next year, the Commission hopes to hire 46,000 teacher interns on permanent, pensionable conditions.

The two-year contract arrangement for the interns is almost over.

A day after being on the run, a suspect in the murders of five family members in Kisumu’s Muhoroni area was taken into custody.

After being taken into custody at the Chemelil police station on Sunday night, Shem Akuku Atieno is currently awaiting his arraignment.

Before his arrest on Sunday, he made a suicide attempt, according to police who are familiar of the incident.

The suspect’s children’s constant wailing at 8 p.m. on Saturday turned what had otherwise been a typical weekend into a terrifying event for the neighbors.

A neighbor named Monica Atieno recounted the terrifying incident:

According to reports, the guy killed his son and wife on Saturday.

He is reported to have gone to the next house with a machete in hand and killed his aunt Mary Otieno, 58, on the spot after viciously attacking his 78-year-old uncle.

The family and community are shocked by the deaths since there is no known motivation, and the suspect had no history of violence.

The deadline for submitting applications for placement at universities and colleges has been extended until further notice by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The organization’s CEO, Mercy Wahome, released a statement on Sunday stating that the goal of the action is to guarantee that all qualified students have adequate time to submit their applications and to prevent any unfavorable outcomes during the placement process.

The KUCCPS explained key elements of the application procedure in its statement.

Notably, since school-level applications have been stopped, all students taking part in the current cycle of applications are regarded as first-time applicants.

As per KUCCPS, the purpose of this change is to guarantee equitable opportunities for all candidates and expedite the procedure.

“With government service payments now managed through the eCitizen platform, the validation process for KUCCPS applications may be delayed. To prevent complications, applicants are urged to avoid making double payments,” KUCCPS said in the statement.

The KUCCPS states that placement applications will only be handled after all students have turned in their course selections in order to guarantee equity.

Two revision chances were announced by the Service after the first placement procedure.

The announcement claims that these adjustments will enable students to reapply if they were not placed the first time round or if they were unable to get the courses they wanted.

Kenya intends to utilize Odinga’s leadership and diplomatic abilities to push for continental advancement by uniting behind him on important African issues.

President Ruto: Support Gov’t Projects Through Public Participation.

Kenyans have been urged by President William Ruto to participate in and mobilize the public in favor of government initiatives.

Speaking to the congregation at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) church in Kasarani, Ruto expressed his opinion that if Kenyans were unified, the country would be great.

In an effort to increase public support for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), Ruto invited Kenyans to take part in forums for public engagement so that laws supporting state initiatives could be put into effect.

“Contribute through public participation so that we can know how we will move Kenya forward together,” he said.

Ruto also promised to hire extra teachers to make sure that Kenya gives priority to education.

“Last year we hired 56,000 teachers, this year we will employ 20,000 teachers,” expressed Ruto.

In addition, the Head of State called on Kenyans to work with the government to boost food production and lower food imports.

Youth leaders were urged by the president to back government initiatives like the creation of digital jobs, labor exports, and the Affordable Housing Program.
