Two individuals who were allegedly harassing Mpesa operators in Embu County have been taken into custody.

Evans Ngui and Jackline Mwende were apprehended on Friday after an operation, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), when it was discovered that they had been swiping cards and stealing large amounts of money from victims.

On January 18, 2023, detectives opened an investigation after learning that the two had gone to Kithimu Trading Center and pursued a 49-year-old Mpesa operator there while posing as Safaricom agents.

It is reported that they persuaded the victim to change his till number and that they were able to access his private information as a result.

“Using his details, they installed a Safaricom app in their mobile phone and withdrew Ksh.24,000 from the till, thereafter beetling off,” the statement states in part.

The two were followed to the Ngariama area on January 26. In this location they were taken into custody and taken to the Itabua Police Station.

They will stay detained at the location as investigators move forward with a manhunt to capture further accomplices.

Mpesa operators and other businesspeople have been advised by the head of the Embu County DCI office to exercise cautious as there are many con artists who pose as representatives of respectable companies.
