A court has been informed that South African gospel singer Kelly Khumalo ordered the murder of football player Senzo Meyiwa, who was her lover at the time.
In 2014, Mr. Meyiwa was shot while attempting to save Ms. Khumalo from armed robbers. 2020 saw five individuals taken into custody.
Lead detective Bongani Gininda conducted “a contractual assassination or hit” on Wednesday, testifying before a Gauteng High Court.
Ms Khumalo’s spokesperson stated that although Ms. Khumalo was unavailable for comment, her “legal team is actively addressing the situation”.
The nation has been engrossed with the trial of individuals who are accused of killing Mr. Meyiwa, a former national football team captain and goalie for the Orlando Pirates.
Following the men’s arrests in 2020, police records were leaked, raising the initial suspicions about Ms. Khumalo’s involvement.
The gospel singer had “no knowledge” of the five people, according to her lawyer at the time, who spoke to local media.
Mr. Gininda informed the court that a suspect had confessed to them that Ms. Khumalo had given them orders to murder Mr. Meyiwa.
Additionally, the main investigator stated that there were “cell phone linkages” between Ms. Khumalo and the accused.
Colonel Lambertus Steyn of the National Cold Case Investigation Unit stated in his testimony from the previous year that Ms. Khumalo had spoken to at least two of the accused before to Mr. Meyiwa’s death.
Furthermore, Ms. Khumalo’s phone contained a picture of cash in a clear bag, which was also discovered on one of the suspects’ phones.
The admissibility of the confession remarks is currently being determined by the court. According to two of the accused, intimidation was used to get them to confess.
Together, Ms. Khumalo and Mr. Meyiwa had a single child.
However, Mr. Gininda stated that the two had a falling out.
He claimed Ms Khumalo “hated him and wanted to get rid of him”.
He went on to say that early in 2013 “communication records” between Ms. Khumalo and her sister indicated that she intended to remove him from office.
