Raila: One-man, one-vote call, it’s not discriminative

Chief of the opposition Raila Odinga has supported the one-man, one-shilling movement initiated by the leaders of Mount Kenya, calling it the greatest course of action for the nation.

The head of Azimio la Umoja claimed there is nothing wrong with the strategy, which calls for greater government funding to be given to populated regions, in a move that is sure to incite political controversy.

He clarified that the strategy will guarantee the equitable distribution of resources rather than prejudice, as some critics have claimed.

Debate was sparked when it was first proposed by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The majority of supporters of President William Ruto have accused Gachagua of dividing the nation.

Raila joined the debate yesterday and declared his unwavering support for the policy.

“I want to agree with the phrase one man one vote one shilling. I agree totally with this,” Raila told a media briefing on Thursday.

Speaking at Chungwa House, the ODM leader welcomed the convenors of the Limuru III conference.

Raila went on to say that devolution is about distributing resources fairly, not equally.

Instead of causing discrimination, the initiative will guarantee that every Kenyan receives an equal share of the resources “created by our sweat.”

In attendance were former governor of Laikipia Nderitu Muriithi and secretary general of the Jubilee Party Jeremiah Kioni. The conference resolutions were being given to Raila by the leaders.

Speaking at the same event, Muriithi urged the national government to curb waste, emphasizing that funds of this kind had to flow to the devolved agencies.

The one man, one vote, one shilling revenue-sharing agreement has garnered strong support from the Deputy President, who claims it will benefit the Mount Kenya region

Gachagua advised the people of the region to keep an eye on politicians’ statements and identify those who are opposed to the initiative.

He declared that anyone opposing the idea was not their ally or protector and that the revenue-sharing deal was what the people of Mount Kenya deserved.

Regional politicians have been supporting the allocation based on figures.

Among the most populous counties are Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.

Northeastern authorities, meanwhile, claimed that the one-man, one-shilling policy would further marginalize their towns.

Some leaders in Meru have also disassociated themselves from the revenue-sharing deal.

Regional MPs emphasized that the Deputy President’s formula will cause some counties to be marginalized.

The current revenue sharing model distributes revenue into five categories: population (45%), basic equal share (25%), poverty (20%), land area (8%), and fiscal responsibility (2%).

Mount Kenya Politicians claim that this leaves the densely populated counties with little money for development.

Three counties scheduled for power interruption on Friday

In order to allow for system maintenance, Kenya Power has informed consumers in three counties that it will not be supplying electricity on Friday.

The firm stated that parts of the counties of Uasin Gishu, Kisii, and Kiambu will be impacted by the planned outage.

Customers in Uasin Gishu will be affected, as are those in Kapseret Lembook.

Kenya Power announced in a notice to the public on Thursday night that power in Kapseret, Mosombor, Shajna & Quarry, Chinese Quarry, and Nilkath Quarry will be switched off from 9.30 am to 5 pm.

It stated that consumers who are close to the specified locations will also be impacted.

Specifically, Nyamataro, Nyakoe, and Mosocho are places of concern in Kisii County.

The temporary power outage is affecting a number of establishments, including Nyagena Hospital, Nyabururu Complex, and Cardinal Otunga.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., residents of Kiamwasi, Nyakoe, Mosocho, Riotoigo, Matieko, a portion of Runga, Ongicha, and other areas will also be without electricity.

Kenya Power has advised homeowners and business owners in Kiambaa and Waguthu, in Kiambu County, to prepare for an eight-hour power outage between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Customers in Mugomoini, Nduota, Kwahai, along Waguthu Feede Road, and the surrounding clients would be impacted.

During the specified time, power outages will also affect Gichi Factory, Waguthu Water, Waguthu Police Station, Kiamba Boys High School, and Karuri County Offices.

Kilifi: Demolitions to pave way for road spark outrage in Malindi

Residents of Maweni in Kilifi County’s Malindi Town are furious because their homes were destroyed on Wednesday to make room for a road.

They said they were not given enough notice to vacate the area where the road connecting the Jesus Cares Center church to the Pentagon was going to be built.

Some claimed to have been promised a relocation, although they have been in the region for almost 30 years and that has not happened yet.

They were shocked to see the semi-permanent and permanent buildings being demolished by bulldozers. A few people worked feverishly to save their belongings.

According to resident Raphael Ramadhani, they had a deal with the authorities to move to Shakahola or close to the garbage site in Mayungu near Malindi.

Ramadhani pleaded with the county administration to honor its word and provide them with alternative land.

More than fifty women had been impacted by the destruction, according to Julia Mapenzi, the owner of a palm wine bar (mangwe) in the area. She begged Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi to assist them.

According to Fredrick Ngumbao, county government representatives originally selected a nine-meter-wide plot of land for the road’s development. He questioned why, once work had begun, the authorities had changed the road’s width to thirty meters.

Dadu Chome, the Malindi subcounty administrator, did not answer calls, thus attempts to get in touch with him were unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, Twahir Abdulkarim, Shella MCA delegate, claimed that public involvement was done and that locals had been properly informed of the plan to construct a road in the area.

According to him, the contractor had begun work on private property and needed to halt in order to make the necessary corrections before work could continue.

A vehicle vandal nabbed in Kiambu.

In Kiamumbi, Kiambu County, an alleged motor vehicle vandal has been taken into custody.

The man, aged 24, was taken into custody after a sting operation that took place in the region, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Thursday.

The guy reportedly has been giving locals nightmares by scaling perimeter fences and then vandalizing parked cars in the area, according to the DCI report.

Based on reports, the guy has been climbing surrounding fences and then damaging nearby parked cars.

Due to this, the locals were obliged to either pay more for watchmen to protect their cars or put their cars in what they believed to be safer far away from their homes.

The DCI stated, “Strategically positioning themselves at various points, troops in Kiamumbi led by the OCS braved night-long drizzles, until 3.40 am when the lone man was spotted scaling the wall of a homestead, Moments later, the man re-emerged carrying the front grid and headlight of a Toyota Harrier.
He was netted and marched to the station. Having been interrogated at length, crucial leads to accomplices and market for the stolen parts have been obtained.”

Police stated that more investigations are still underway.

Police recovers assorted M-Kopa phones, flashing tools and hard drives

As part of an ongoing investigation into questionable phone repair shops, detectives in Mpeketoni, Lamu, recovered more than 70 suspected stolen cell phones, laptops and tablets.

In addition, four individuals were taken into custody.

This is meant to counteract the recent increase in electronic theft in the region.

Hard drives, flashing tools, and several M-Kopa mobile phones were also reportedly found, according to police who carried out the investigation.

The operation was carried out in response to reports of an increase in cell phone theft.

The devices are often reassembled in nearby repair shops before being shipped to neighboring countries or other regions of the country to be resold.

According to authorities, the analysis of a few of those that were found indicates the victims had the devices violently stolen from them.

To find those behind, an investigation is still underway.

This is the most recent operation of its kind to combat the crime.

Up to 500 cell phones have been recovered during these raids, which have taken place in Kisii and Nairobi.

Police have threatened to bring harsh charges after their investigations against dealers of used cell phones and electronic engineers/repairers who work on the devices.

According to police spokesperson Dr Resla Onyango, police are currently following up on solid leads in order to tackle the threat.

Dr. Onyango advised anyone who have had their electronics stolen to always report the incident to the police.

According to authorities, the activities are still under progress and will soon extend to more cities.

Police officer detained for reportedly soliciting Sh40,000 bribe

A police officer is under arrest on allegations of trying to extract Sh40,000 from a suspect who has an outstanding case.

The complainant, or suspect, had been taken into custody by the police; however, upon the file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for authorization of prosecution, the complainant was ordered to be freed and the case resolved extrajudicially.

But the complainant claimed the officer informed him he needed to give him “something small” in order “to facilitate a smooth closure” on the case.

It is reported that he threatened to charge the complaint with further offenses in court if the complainant did not pay the bribe that he demanded.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission received a report from the complainant, who subsequently conducted an investigation and detained the police officer.

Before being booked at Kilimani Police Station, he was processed and transported to Integrity Centre Police Station.

Following the completion of the remaining investigational components, the officer was subsequently freed on bond.

Parts of Nairobi reports earth tremors

xr:d:DAE6x3pwjgo:3886,j:2288221658913959147,t:23061101

On Wednesday afternoon, a few residents in Nairobi city reported experiencing slight earth tremors.

Earthquakes Monitor, one of the websites that tracks earthquakes and tremors worldwide, reported that at approximately 1:25 p.m., a “seismic-like event” had been detected close to Nairobi.

By Wednesday evening, neither a national nor an international seismological agency had verified the earth tremor reports.

According to Quakes Today, the nearest verified seismic activity to Kenya was a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Huíla, Angola.

The shaking of the earth’s surface caused by a sudden release of energy in the lithosphere that generates seismic waves is known as an earthquake or earth tremor.

The magnitude of the movement distinguishes an earthquake from a tremor.

Earth tremors are not as strong as earthquakes.

The severity of earthquakes varies; they might be so little that no one can feel them, or they can be strong enough to send people and things hurtling skyward, destroy essential utilities, and level entire cities.

Blow To DP Gachagua as budget slashed by Sh500m

The Deputy President’s operations budget has been cut by almost Sh500 million by MPs in the most recent strike, which might seriously impair his mobility.

The funds were allotted for operations, maintenance, and other running costs, according to estimates provided by the National Treasury.

Nevertheless, following an evaluation by the Ndindi Nyoro-led Budget and Appropriations Committee, the funds were divided and assigned to specific programs with defined outcomes.

For ongoing costs associated with restoring Harambee House Annex, the committee allocated Sh80 million.

The DP’s offices would receive a facelift, with development costs totaling an additional Sh20 million.

Members of Parliament have allocated Sh150 million from the savings for coffee reforms, Sh100 million for tea, and Sh150 million for the elimination of drug misuse.

The reduction follows the National Treasury’s recent announcement that the top offices’ budgets would be drastically reduced.

In his committee appearance, Treasury PS Chris Kiptoo stated that the exchequer aimed to examine and rationalize votes for the office of president.

The top offices use the funds designated for “other operating expenses” to pay for mostly unspecified activities.

The DP’s support services had been allotted Sh2.5 billion by Treasury, an increase of Sh500 million above the previous year’s amount.

The budget for other operating expenses increased by Sh800 million to Sh1 billion as a result of the revisions, while the budget for vehicle maintenance increased by Sh30 million.

The fuel budget for DP was increased by Sh70 million, while the hospitality budget increased by Sh250 million to reach a height of Sh480 million the next year.

The Budget Committee’s total budget has been cut by Sh180 billion, or from Sh4.18 trillion to Sh4 trillion.

Babu: I’ll sue the govt for unlawful detention during protests

Babu Owino, the MP for Embakasi East, has threatened to take on the government for wrongful arrest after the DPP withdrew the subversion case against him.

Along with five other ODM party members and the self-described ghetto president Calvin Gaucho, Babu was detained and charged with subversive acts and plotting to cause disorder last year.

But on Wednesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions requested that the criminal court drop the accusations, clearing them of any wrongdoing.

The defendant was charged with subversion in accordance with Penal Code sections 77(1) and (3).

The Nakuru High Court ruled in March that the aforementioned part was unconstitutional.

According to Justice Samwel Mohochi, the Penal Code’s sections 77(1) and (3) restrict people’s freedom of speech because they are relics of colonialism. As a result, he ruled that it was unconstitutional to enforce it on any member of the public.

The DPP attempted to reconsider the charges against Babu and his co-accused in light of the declaration.

Speaking to media outside the court, Babu announced that he will be filing a lawsuit in the High Court to pursue damages.

“We will file a constitutional petition in which we will be seeking damages and the cost from the state. We were unfairly treated, detained beyond 24 hours without food and water,” He said.

In July of last year, during the height of nationwide anti-government rallies called by the Azimio la Umoja coalition in opposition to new tax policies, Babu was detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

After that, he was driven to the police station in Wanguru, Kirinyaga County, where he was held.
