Kirinyaga: Investigations launched following the discovery of a charcoal trader’s dismembered remains in a shallow grave.

In Kagio town, located in Kirinyaga County, a family is reeling from shock after the remains of 24-year-old Morris Murimi, who had been missing for a month, were uncovered in a forest within the Ndia constituency.

Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei confirmed that Murimi was reported missing by his family on August 7, 2024. His severed body parts were discovered in Kiamugungo Forest.

“We had been searching for him as a family, but tragically, his body was discovered dismembered and buried in a shallow grave,” Koskei reported. The horrifying finding came about after villagers alerted authorities to a dog seen carrying a human leg.

“Our attention was drawn to the area when a dog was observed gnawing on a decomposing human limb. The foul odor guided us to where the body parts were located—some scattered and others interred in a shallow grave,” Koskei detailed.

Murimi’s family shared their last moments with him. His mother, Grace Wangari, disclosed that Murimi, who worked as a charcoal trader, was contacted by a customer to pick up charcoal from Kiamugungo village shortly before he vanished.

“It’s hard to fathom that the person who called my son could have robbed him of his motorcycle and then taken his life so brutally,” lamented Edward Waweru, Murimi’s father.

Leah Wambui, the deceased’s wife, identified her husband’s remains by the clothes he had been wearing. “When we were contacted by the detectives, we went to Kiamugungo Forest. I recognized his clothing. It was heartbreaking to see his body dismembered at the joints,” she recounted.

The remains have been transferred to Kerugoya Mortuary for a postmortem examination and DNA analysis as the investigation progresses. “We are seeking justice for my son, and we hope the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice soon,” Grace Wangari expressed.

Authorities are currently probing the tragic incident involving the deaths of four children who were playing inside an abandoned old freezer in the northeastern Zambezi Region, Namibia.

The children, ranging in age from three to six, were discovered inside the inactive deep freezer in the densely populated town of Katima Mulilo on Monday afternoon.

Initial investigations suggest that they may have accidentally become trapped while playing, leading to suffocation. According to reports, of the four children, two were found dead inside the freezer, while the other two succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital.

A father identified as Aranges Shoro shared with The Namibian newspaper, “When I arrived, I found paramedics assisting my daughter and another girl.

They quickly transported them to the hospital, while the others were taken away in police mortuary vehicles.” Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo emphasized, as reported by AFP, that “There was a hook on the freezer that could only be released from the outside.

They were trapped for about an hour and a half, which ultimately led to suffocation.” Tragically, the two children who were rushed to Katima Mulilo State Hospital were pronounced dead upon their arrival, according to reports from the public broadcaster NBC. It remains unclear why the non-operational freezer was left outside the residence of one of the affected families.

Instagram rolling out new parental control features aimed at users under the age of 18.

Meta Platforms is introducing improved privacy and parental controls for Instagram accounts belonging to users under 18 as part of a major initiative to tackle increasing worries about the adverse impacts of social media.

The company announced on Tuesday that all eligible Instagram accounts will be automatically converted to “Teen Accounts,” which will be set to private by default.

Users of these accounts will only be able to receive messages and tags from accounts they follow or have existing connections with, and settings related to sensitive content will be adjusted to the highest level of restrictions available.

Users under the age of 16 can only modify the default settings with the consent of a parent or guardian. Additionally, parents will have access to a range of tools that enable them to monitor their children’s interactions and restrict app usage. Research has shown a correlation between social media usage and elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities, especially among younger audiences.

Major companies such as Meta, ByteDance’s TikTok, and Google’s YouTube are currently embroiled in numerous lawsuits initiated by parents and school districts, which address concerns regarding the addictive qualities of social media platforms. In the previous year, 33 states in the U.S., including California and New York, took legal action against these companies for allegedly misleading the public about the risks associated with their platforms.

Prominent services like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok permit user registration for individuals aged 13 and older. This latest initiative from Meta comes three years after it discontinued development of a teenager-specific version of Instagram, following calls from lawmakers and advocacy groups who raised concerns about safety.

In July, the U.S. Senate made progress by advancing two significant online safety initiatives – the Kids Online Safety Act and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act. These bills aim to hold social media companies accountable for the impact their platforms have on young users. As part of these updates, Instagram will notify its users under the age of 18 to log off after spending 60 minutes on the app each day.

Additionally, new accounts will automatically feature a sleep mode that mutes notifications overnight. Meta has announced that within 60 days, these users in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia will be transitioned to teen accounts, with plans to extend this change to the European Union later this year. Starting in January, teens around the globe will begin receiving their designated teen accounts.

Key Business Sectors Where AI Can Enhance Revenue Generation

Companies of all sizes that have embraced artificial intelligence (AI) are experiencing substantial advantages, ranging from enhanced productivity and operational flexibility to superior customer service and informed decision-making.

McKinsey reports that organizations leading in AI adoption are achieving performance levels 3.4 times greater than their competitors within the same sector. As AI continues to unlock remarkable growth opportunities in critical industries across the continent, it is reshaping business operations, fostering innovation, boosting efficiency, and transforming lives.

The United Nations projects that AI could add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with Africa potentially contributing $1.2 trillion to that figure. To maximize the benefits of AI, businesses must focus on deploying it in areas where it can yield the most significant results. Below are several key sectors and examples of how organizations can harness AI to accelerate revenue growth.

1. Lead prioritization

An important focus area is the generation of new business leads. Artificial Intelligence can play a vital role in evaluating the quality of the leads acquired by the sales team. In fact, securing a few high-quality leads can be far more advantageous than having multiple mediocre ones. By implementing a points-based scoring system, AI can effectively assess and rank leads based on their potential value. This approach enables the sales team to identify which opportunities are truly worth pursuing, ultimately leading to increased sales and more impactful results.

2. Enhanced Targeted Marketing

Today’s most successful marketing strategies are characterized by their personalized and targeted approaches. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in simplifying the attainment of the personalized targeting required for effective marketing in the current landscape. When an AI marketing tool is integrated with a company’s data, it can generate and refine customized marketing content tailored to the individual customer’s CRM information.

3. Finance and Billing

One of the clearest opportunities for artificial intelligence to enhance revenue within a company lies in the areas of finance and billing. In 2023, Kenya’s AI industry attracted $1.96 billion in investments, as reported by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association. The report highlighted how Kenyans are harnessing AI technology to optimize business operations and improve daily tasks. For instance, when it comes to managing expense reports, an AI system equipped with image recognition capabilities can enable businesses to scan their bills. The system then automatically identifies and generates crucial details such as the amount, location, date, time, and expense category, significantly reducing the time and effort required for manual entry.

In terms of billing, AI can streamline the onboarding process for new clients by automating substantial portions of it. Furthermore, AI-driven tools can efficiently extract pertinent details from invoices, including customer information and product descriptions, and seamlessly populate billing systems, thereby increasing operational efficiency.

4. Boosting Employee Productivity

There exists a clear link between employee productivity and a company’s revenue. Enhanced productivity is largely influenced by positive experiences at work. When employees are more productive, it naturally leads to higher revenues and profit margins. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to elevate both productivity levels and the overall employee experience by automating monotonous tasks.

This automation enables employees to concentrate on meaningful, engaging work that contributes to increased revenue. It is essential to integrate AI thoughtfully, selecting the right providers. While AI can significantly enhance revenue generation for organizations, businesses must understand the complexities involved in adopting this technology. This entails conducting thorough research to ensure the tools chosen are suitable for their unique needs and comply with best practices regarding privacy.

5. Enhanced Customer Experience

In recent years, customer experience (CX) has emerged as a key differentiator for businesses, surpassing traditional factors like product features or pricing. When customers enjoy a positive interaction with a brand, they are typically willing to pay a premium, exhibit greater loyalty, and eagerly recommend the business to others. A prime example of this is the implementation of chatbots by banks in Kenya, which has not only streamlined digital banking processes but also enhanced customer onboarding and boosted transaction volumes on online and mobile banking platforms.

As such, businesses must now go above and beyond to create memorable customer experiences that distinguish them from competitors. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) can play a significant role. For instance, sentiment analysis powered by AI can effectively pinpoint dissatisfied customers based on their interactions across various channels. This capability allows customer success teams to address their concerns proactively, ultimately transforming their overall experience with the business.
