Nairobi: Three arrested after man stabbed to death

Three individuals were apprehended following the death of a 26-year-old man who succumbed to stab wounds sustained during a confrontation at their residence in the Ushirika area of Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Among those detained was the deceased’s roommate, identified as Mohamed Jibril.

Authorities reported that the victim arrived at a local hospital with a severe stab wound to the chest over the weekend.

It was indicated that the deceased was involved in a dispute within the apartment for reasons that remain unclear before he was stabbed on the left side of his chest.

A team of investigators visited the location and recovered a kitchen knife believed to be the weapon used in the crime.

Additionally, two mobile phones and bloodstained tissue papers hidden in a dustbin were also collected as evidence.

Incidents of stabbings and violent assaults have been increasing in various parts of Eastleigh, prompting police operations aimed at curbing this trend.

Investigations suggest that some of these incidents are influenced by Somali political issues and clan dynamics, which are significant factors within the community.

In response, police have assigned a specialized team of detectives from the Nairobi region and the DCI headquarters to concentrate on Eastleigh as part of broader crime reduction efforts.

Officials have noted that the area is experiencing rapid growth in various challenges, necessitating focused attention.

Law enforcement has reported that families in the vicinity are living in fear due to incidents where relatives have been targeted and subjected to torture for ransom.

“We have several victims currently hospitalized after being attacked and stabbed by roaming gangs,” stated an officer familiar with the situation.

In addition to the threats of robbery and extortion, at least five murder cases have occurred in the area within the past month, all of which have been resolved, according to police, who confirmed that suspects have been apprehended.

Four of these cases involve an Ethiopian-Somali man named Hashim Dagane Muhumed, who has been arrested and linked to four murder cases, all involving female victims in the area.

Authorities believe he may also be connected to other murder cases that have yet to be uncovered or revealed.

Authorities are looking into how Hashim, a suspect in the murders of four women, including a 12-year-old girl in Eastleigh, Nairobi, obtained a Kenyan identity card, despite indications that he may not be a Kenyan national.

NTSA Cracks Down on Unregistered Vehicles with Two-Week Deadline

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has formally notified vehicle dealers and showroom operators, providing them with a two-week period to register all motor vehicles in their possession on the NTSA portal.

In a public announcement made by NTSA Director General George Njao on Friday, the authority cautioned that non-compliance by Monday, December 16, 2024, will lead to the revocation of operating licenses and the confiscation of unregistered vehicles by law enforcement.

This directive follows a recent compliance review conducted by various government bodies, including NTSA, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Financial Reporting Center, and the Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS). The review revealed significant non-compliance among motor vehicle dealers across the nation.

“Upon concluding the review, the Authority has observed that numerous motor vehicle dealers are retaining unregistered vehicles on their premises, which violates the stipulations of the Traffic Act, Cap 403,” stated the NTSA Director General.

A transport sector expert explained that many dealers postpone vehicle registration to maintain their market value, as depreciation is often associated with the registration date. “A new number plate or series attracts customers, which is why many yard owners opt to use dealer plates (KD) to delay registration until they find a buyer,” the expert remarked.

The government’s enforcement action is anticipated to have a considerable effect on the vehicle import and sales industry, with the NTSA aiming for significant revenue increases from registration fees. The registration cost for a vehicle varies from Ksh 1,700 to Ksh 16,000, depending on engine capacity. With over 1,000 vehicles registered daily, this represents a substantial revenue stream.

The NTSA has called on all stakeholders to comply without delay to avoid penalties and ensure legal compliance.

Breaking News: Explosion Shakes The Hague Residential Area

An explosion has occurred at a three-story apartment building in The Hague, according to police reports.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the location to extinguish a fire that led to the collapse of several residences in the Tarwekamp neighborhood around 06:15 (05:15 GMT).

Rescue teams are searching for as many as 20 individuals believed to have been present during the explosion. So far, four people have been rescued from the debris.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown; however, Dutch police reported that a vehicle sped away from the scene shortly afterward and are seeking witnesses.

Reports from Dutch media indicate that five apartments were destroyed in the incident.

Rescue teams, accompanied by sniffer dogs, have been deployed to search through the wreckage, although some areas of the site are still deemed too hazardous to enter.

Fourteen-year-old Adam Muller recounted to the AFP news agency that the explosion “felt like an earthquake.”

“I was asleep when I suddenly heard a loud bang,” he stated. “I looked out the window and saw flames. It’s incredibly shocking,” he added.

Janny Knol, the national police commissioner in the Netherlands, expressed that there is a sense of “disbelief and uncertainty” within the community.

In a statement, Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima expressed their condolences to those affected and those concerned for their loved ones.

Police are anticipated to provide further information at 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

Kericho: 3 Children Burnt To Death in Tragic House Fire

Three children, aged between 4 and 10 years, were tragically burned beyond recognition when a fire consumed the house they were locked in under mysterious circumstances on Friday evening.

The minors, including a disabled 10-year-old, had been secured inside by a sibling who went to a neighbor’s house to play in Moburo village, located in Kapsogut, Kericho County.

Local residents reported that the fire completely destroyed the family’s main dwelling, which was built from timber and iron sheets, leaving nothing behind.

It is alleged that the children’s parents were away at the time of the incident and had left a phone charging, which may have exploded and ignited the blaze.

According to witnesses, some neighbors saw thick smoke rising from the property and rushed over, only to find the house fully engulfed in flames.

Efforts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, as the dry timber used in the house’s construction and the windy conditions exacerbated the situation.

The incident was reported to the Cheborgei Police Station, and officers quickly arrived at the scene to recover the charred remains, which were subsequently taken to the mortuary at Kapkatet Hospital.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire.

The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced that the Thika Superhighway will experience partial closures from December 12 to December 17.

This closure will take place at the Juja Highpoint (Centurion) to facilitate the construction of a footbridge.

KeNHA has advised the public to anticipate traffic disruptions due to this closure.

“Nairobi-bound traffic will be redirected behind the Lexo petrol station before rejoining the Superhighway, while Thika-bound traffic will be diverted behind the Centurion hotel before returning to the Superhighway,” the authority stated.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution in the vicinity of the construction areas, adhere to the traffic management plan, and cooperate with police and traffic marshals present.

In December 2022, former Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen mandated the construction of at least four footbridges along the Thika Superhighway.

He indicated that the installation of these footbridges would facilitate pedestrian movement and reduce the frequency of accidents on this heavily trafficked highway.

KeNHA plans to construct the bridges at the Juja Highpoint near the Centurion hotel, the Kihunguro section, the Juja Mona Park area, and the Clay Works/Northlands.

“Further footbridges are scheduled for installation at various locations along the Thika Superhighway, with engineering designs already completed,” Murkomen noted at that time.

He was addressing inquiries from Ruiru MP Simon King’ara regarding safety measures on Thika Road.

Murkomen also mentioned that the government would implement several strategies to mitigate accidents on this busy highway.

These strategies include public awareness campaigns regarding the use of designated crossing points and passenger pick-up and drop-off zones, as well as the installation of road signage.

Additionally, he stated that the government is enhancing the marking of road bumps to improve the safety of road users.

KeNHA Announces Temporary Traffic Disruption Along Waiyaki Way

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption at the Kangemi Interchange along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi. This disruption is attributed to scheduled construction activities for the Kangemi bridge, which will take place from December 11, 2024, to January 17, 2025.

In a statement, KeNHA informed the public about the impending traffic changes on the A8 Highway (Waiyaki Way). The construction will be executed in two distinct phases.

Phase 1 will involve the diversion of Nairobi-bound traffic (left-hand side) to the right-hand side, commencing on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, and concluding on Monday, December 26, 2024.

Phase 2 will see Nakuru/Rironi-bound traffic (right-hand side) redirected to the left-hand side, starting on Saturday, December 28, 2024, and ending on Friday, January 17, 2025.

KeNHA has urged motorists to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and to cooperate with police and traffic marshals present at the site.

In a related announcement, KeNHA indicated that the Thika Superhighway will experience partial closures from December 12 to December 17. This closure will occur at the Juja Highpoint (Centurion) to facilitate the construction of a footbridge.

The authority has cautioned the public to anticipate traffic disruptions due to this closure. Nairobi-bound traffic will be redirected behind the Lexo petrol station before rejoining the Superhighway, while Thika-bound traffic will be diverted behind the Centurion hotel before returning to the Superhighway.

In December 2022, the then Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, mandated the construction of at least four footbridges along the Thika Superhighway. He emphasized that the installation of these footbridges would enhance pedestrian movement and reduce the frequency of accidents along this heavily trafficked highway.

KeNHA is set to construct bridges at the Juja Highpoint stage adjacent to the Centurion Hotel, in the Kihunguro section, the Juja Mona Park area, and at Clay Works/Northlands.

“Plans are in place for the installation of additional footbridges at various locations along the Thika Superhighway, and the engineering design has been completed,” Murkomen stated.

This statement was made in response to inquiries from Ruiru MP Simon King’ara regarding the safety measures implemented along Thika Road.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended three individuals suspected of murdering a bar security guard prior to stealing several bottles of beer valued at Ksh.26,000.

The suspects were captured at different locations, with the first, Festus Odhiambo, also known as Arum, aged 31, being arrested in Migori. His accomplices, Thomas Momanyi Omenta, also 31, and 26-year-old Grace Kerubo Oseko, were taken into custody in Kisii township.

According to the DCI, investigators recovered crucial evidence, including a set of blood-stained clothing from the first suspect and stolen mobile phones from the other two.

The suspects are alleged to have ambushed the 22-year-old guard at Engako Bar, situated in the Nyachenge trading centre in Kisii, where they assaulted him with crude weapons, leaving him critically injured before robbing the establishment.

“As the victim succumbed to his injuries, his attackers broke into the bar and fled with Ksh.26,000 worth of alcoholic beverages,” stated the DCI.

The incident was reported to the police by the Tabaka area chief, prompting a manhunt that ultimately led to the suspects’ arrest.

Following their capture, the Sub-County Head of Investigations organized an identification parade on Friday, as it was revealed that the suspects had been present at the bar on the night of the murder. Several regular patrons were able to identify them.

The three individuals are currently detained at Nyamarambe Police Station and are being processed under a miscellaneous application to facilitate ongoing investigations.
