KDF Officer Remanded in Custody for Fatal Bar Brawl

The Nakuru Court has authorized the prosecution to detain a senior military officer for five days in connection with the alleged killing of a 74-year-old civilian at a police canteen.

Jackson Okeyo, an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Bahati, submitted an affidavit requesting a 14-day extension to hold Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Sergeant John Kimani Muturi in order to complete the investigation.

Muturi is accused of assaulting Moris Gachanja on December 25 while they were consuming drinks at the Githioro Police Station canteen.

Okeyo indicated that a postmortem examination has yet to be performed and that witness statements are still pending.

He emphasized the necessity of conducting a forensic analysis of Muturi’s mobile devices to extract geographical and call data.

The officer expressed concerns that Muturi poses a flight risk due to his access to resources and potential connections that could aid in his escape.

Okeyo asserted that the requested 14 days would facilitate a postmortem examination of the deceased to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Furthermore, this period would allow for the collection and documentation of statements from key eyewitnesses, including the suspect’s girlfriend and other patrons of the Githioro Police Canteen, whose testimonies are crucial for reconstructing the events.

He also mentioned that this time would permit the verification of Muturi’s service record and the gathering of pertinent information regarding his mental health or any history of violent behavior, which could be significant for the prosecution’s case.

Okeyo informed the court that, considering Muturi’s military background, his release could result in the interference and intimidation of witnesses, many of whom are his relatives.

In response, Muturi’s attorney, Harry Gakinya, contested the application, asserting that a postmortem had already been conducted on the deceased and that witness statements had been collected.

Gakinya contended that the investigating officer ought to have obtained pertinent information from the military police who were stationed at the Githioro Police Station on the day the incident occurred.

Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet permitted the prosecution a period of five days, observing that certain elements of Muturi’s purported involvement remained ambiguous.

Adet directed that Muturi be transported to the hospital and instructed the officer in charge of the Githioro Police Station to document his complaint.

The case is scheduled for mention on January 3.

Machakos: Trio Linked to Mlolongo Land Dispute Abducted

Kidnapped man in dark room. Hostage, slavery concept. 4k resolution video footage.

Three families in Mlolongo are urgently appealing for justice following the abduction of their loved ones under mysterious circumstances.

The families, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, are fervently seeking answers from the authorities.

“We demand our rights. Wherever our children are, we want them back. Even if they are deceased, we simply wish to have their remains. We have endured immense suffering,” states Monica Muema, sister of one of the abducted individuals.

Monica Muema is heartbroken after her brother, Allan Muema, was reportedly taken on December 16.

“He was seized by unidentified individuals wearing masks, and the vehicle had obscured license plates. That is how my brother disappeared,” Monica recounts.

Monica is perplexed as to why her brother, a young entrepreneur, was singled out.

“My brother is a hardworking individual; he operates his own stall selling women’s bags. He is only 28 years old and not even married,” she explains.

She describes a frustrating experience in her attempts to seek assistance from the police.

“I have visited every police station in Kiambu in search of my brother. At each location, we are informed that he has not been seen. We have been carrying around a photograph, and whenever we arrive at a station, we are told they do not recognize his face. We were directed to Mlolongo to file a report, which we did, leaving a picture there,” Monica shares.

Duncan Chalo is facing a similar ordeal, as his brother, Justus Mutumwa, went missing last Monday while en route to work in Kamulu.

“He was taken by masked men who claimed to be police officers. I cannot believe that anyone else would abduct someone unless they were law enforcement,” Chalo asserts.

Chalo expresses his frustration regarding the lack of urgency from law enforcement agencies.

“His phone has been off since the 16th. He has not contacted anyone to indicate which police station he might be held at. I have visited all police stations and prisons in Nairobi and Kajiado, yet I have not located him,” Chalo reports.

Ndeti Mwau is another concerned individual, searching for his brother who was abducted by unknown assailants last week while at work.

My brother has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. He was riding his motorbike for work when he was abducted. We are unaware of his current whereabouts, as those responsible for his abduction were equipped with a vehicle and wore masks, he states.

Authorities in Embu County are conducting an investigation into the unexplained death of an Administration Police (AP) officer, whose remains were found along the Manyatta-Kianjokoma road.

Embu North OCPD Benjamin Kiprono confirmed the details, identifying the deceased as 35-year-old Collins Wafula, who was assigned to the Embu North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) headquarters.

Kiprono reported that Wafula was last seen departing from an end-of-year celebration at the DCC offices. He was said to be heading towards Kianjokoma, where he subsequently joined a group at Jambo Lodge for drinks. However, the specifics of his activities following that point are unclear.

The officer’s body was discovered early the next morning by a passer-by in the Kavutiri area, who immediately notified the authorities.

“It remains uncertain whether this incident was a hit-and-run or if the officer was killed elsewhere and his body disposed of on the road,” stated Kiprono.

The OCPD has called upon residents who may possess any information that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding Wafula’s death to come forward and assist in the police investigation.

City commuters brace for disruption as KeNHA closes key road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a partial closure of Kipande Road in Nairobi for a duration of at least three days.

This closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of a cross culvert on the road.

KeNHA has informed the public that Kipande Road will be partially closed, with traffic diverted to Ngara Road. The closure is scheduled to begin on Friday, December 27, 2024, and will last until Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

The purpose of this closure is to allow for the installation of the cross culvert at Kipande Road, thereby ensuring a seamless connection in accordance with the Authority’s mandate, as stated in their public notice.

During this period, all traffic will be redirected through the Embu-Nairobi Highway/Prof. Wangari Maathai Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, and Kolobot Road as alternative routes.

KeNHA has also advised motorists to exercise caution in the vicinity of the work zones and to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan.

This announcement follows a recent notification from KeNHA regarding the closure of a section of the Southern Bypass for the next two weeks.

This closure will impact both sides of the road from the Ole Sereni Interchange to the Ngong Road Interchange.

According to KeNHA, this measure is intended to facilitate the rehabilitation of the expansion joints of all bridges along the affected section.

Additionally, it will allow for the reconstruction of the concrete pavement of the Virtual Weighbridge.

The Authority has indicated that this closure will commence on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 8 PM and will continue until midnight on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Behind the Badge: Cop Disarmed and Arrested in Nairobi Shisha Joint Raid

A police officer was apprehended during a multi-agency operation targeting a shisha establishment in Nairobi.

This operation was initiated in response to allegations of drug and sex trafficking activities.

Remarkable details have surfaced regarding the carefully orchestrated operation conducted by investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada), and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), which led to the dismantling of a shisha lounge suspected of drug-related activities.

Authorities indicated that the establishment had been under surveillance due to its involvement in sex and drug trafficking.

Coordinated by a multi-agency team, the operation commenced as investigators approached the venue.

Upon entry, law enforcement officials arrested the police officer, who is the proprietor of the establishment.

The officer was found in possession of an unlicensed CZ Pistol, which was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

The raid also resulted in the confiscation of 20 rounds of 7.62 by 39mm ammunition, another CZ Pistol with 15 rounds, marijuana, and shisha bongs believed to be infused with drugs.

Prior intelligence gathered by the multi-agency team indicated that the lounge was a site for underage sex trafficking and drug distribution, with the police officer and his wife—who was absent during the operation—allegedly complicit in these activities.

Further reports suggested that the underage girls involved were trafficked from refugee camps in a neighboring country.

Following the arrest, the officer was taken to Muthaiga police station, where he awaits arraignment at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts.

Authorities have noted that incidents of drug trafficking and consumption are prevalent in such establishments.

On Friday, an accident involving a private vehicle occurred along the Kericho-Awasi road, resulting in four fatalities.

According to police reports, one passenger survived the incident and is currently hospitalized with severe injuries.

The accident took place in the Pala region when the driver of a Nissan Vanette lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road.

Authorities indicated that the car ended up in a ditch, leading to the immediate deaths of the four individuals, which included the male driver, another male passenger, and two female passengers.

The sole survivor sustained a fractured left hand, as reported by the police.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene to assist in transporting the deceased to Ortho mortuary.

The vehicle has been towed to a local police station for further investigation.

Police have stated that an inquiry into the accident is ongoing. This incident follows a troubling trend of increased fatal accidents over the past week, which have resulted in approximately 20 deaths.

Recent incidents include seven fatalities on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road and four in Mariakani, Kilifi County.

Numerous others are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in these accidents.

Annually, over 4,000 Kenyans lose their lives in traffic accidents, which also leave thousands with serious injuries, adversely affecting families.

Unrest in Embu Town as Locals Call for Billy Mwangi Release

Residents of Embu town engaged in protests on Friday, demanding the safe return of Billy Mwangi, who was abducted.

The 24-year-old was forcibly taken from a barber shop in Embu on Saturday, December 21.

During the protests, residents set fires and blocked roads, expressing their outrage over Mwangi’s disappearance, which has now lasted six days.

According to Mwangi’s family, he was seized by four armed men wearing masks, who arrived in a double-cabin pickup truck before fleeing towards the Embu-Nairobi Highway.

Since the incident on Saturday, the family has conducted extensive searches throughout the county but has found no leads. They remain uncertain about the motives behind his abduction, although reports suggest that a controversial post he made on X, featuring an AI-generated image that portrayed President Ruto unfavorably, may have made him a target.

Mwangi is one of seven young individuals who have been abducted this month following provocative social media posts directed at President William Ruto and his administration.

In December alone, social media users Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplang’at, and Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull, have been reported missing, contributing to a total of 82 abductions since June.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has indicated that out of the reported cases, 29 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Both the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service (NPS) have denied any involvement in these abductions.

Volleyball legend Janet Wanja dies At MP Shah Hospital

It is with great sorrow that the sporting community mourns the loss of Kenyan volleyball icon Janet Wanja, who has tragically succumbed to gallbladder cancer.

The announcement of Wanja’s passing was made by her brother, Kevin Kimani.

“The family of Janet Wanja wishes to inform the public of her demise following a courageous battle with cancer,” Kimani stated during an interview with a local radio station.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Kenya Pipeline Company for their unwavering support throughout this journey. We also wish to thank our friends, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).”

Kimani indicated that further information would be shared in due course.

Wanja’s health began to decline in August, shortly after her return from the Paris Olympics, where she served as the fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers.

A distinguished athlete, Wanja represented Kenya at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and played a pivotal role in securing the Women’s African Volleyball Championship with the Malkia Strikers in 2007, among numerous other accolades throughout her career.

The announcement of her passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences from prominent figures in the Kenyan sports community.

Harambee Stars Captain Michael Olunga expressed, “Gone too soon, champion. Your contributions to volleyball in Kenya and the broader sports industry were significant and will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, legend. My thoughts are with her family during this challenging time.”

Musician Daddy Owen remarked, “I am profoundly saddened to announce the loss of another beloved friend. Rest in peace, Wanja. You will always be remembered as an extraordinary and vibrant volleyball player, whose legacy continues to illuminate the history of Kenyan sports.”

“Your name will forever be inscribed in the chronicles of Kenya’s sporting achievements. My deepest condolences go out to your family and friends, particularly to your brother Kimani. Rest peacefully, Wanja. You were truly exceptional.”

Wanja’s passing comes just days after former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama visited the family to offer support to the ailing volleyball star.

Gov’t Rakes in Sh900 Million Daily from eCitizen Platform

The Director General of the Directorate of eCitizen Services, Ambassador Isaac Ochieng, has announced that the platform currently boasts 13.5 million active accounts.

“We have 13.5 million account holders, and this service is available to all Kenyans aged 18 and above,” stated Ochieng.

In a recent statement, Julius Kibet Bitok, the Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, disclosed that the government is now generating nearly Sh900 million daily, a significant increase from Sh60 million, as citizens worldwide conveniently access various services.

“This is a promise fulfilled. It was one of the commitments made by the Kenya Kwanza government, and the implementation has been smooth. Gava Mkononi is now a reality,” Bitok remarked.

Bitok further noted that the platform has enabled Kenyans to navigate the bureaucratic hurdles associated with accessing government services.

“As a result, it has significantly reduced the queues at government offices and has also helped to prevent revenue leakages,” he added.

The platform is anticipated to generate over Sh2 billion daily in the upcoming year, with funds directed to the National Treasury.

“We have streamlined payments through a single pay bill number, which is 222. Previously, we had more than 1,000 pay bill accounts,” Bitok explained.

State data indicates that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is the most active government department on eCitizen, offering services such as driving license applications, vehicle registration, and vehicle inspections.

Immigration ranks first in the processing of passport applications, followed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, which holds the third position due to its role in issuing certificates of good conduct. The Kenya Wildlife Service occupies the fourth position, with Business Registration Services following closely behind.

Ochieng remarked, “We are indeed an international case study, with numerous countries worldwide looking to us as a benchmark.”

Bitok noted that the platform has allowed state agencies, such as KWS, to double their revenue, despite initial pushback from stakeholders. He further mentioned that several nations are eager to learn from this model, with the Zambian government already taking notes.

Ruth Murungi, a boutique entrepreneur from Isiolo, is one of the six million Kenyans utilizing eCitizen services each month. She expressed that she can now meet her tax obligations promptly.

In Kisumu, David Osino, who owns a cybercafé named D-Lan Networks & Communications, dedicates much of his time to assisting clients with eCitizen services.

Kenyans residing abroad are also benefiting from these services. Steve Biko, a Kenyan artist based in Amsterdam, stated that he no longer needs to travel back home or visit the Kenyan Embassy for government services like passport renewal, as he can conveniently access them via his phone.

Asa Makori, a taxi operator in Kisumu, reminisces about the days when individuals had to visit KRA offices for services now provided by NTSA. He appreciates that these services can now be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

Maxwel Munyendo, an office administrator at Chams Adventures, highlighted the advantages of eCitizen, noting that it has significantly reduced the cost of doing business by allowing many tasks to be completed online, thus minimizing the need for multiple trips to government offices and the payment of bribes to officials and intermediaries.

The Ministry of Information, Communication, and Digital Economy has been instrumental in establishing the necessary digital infrastructure to support the operation of the eCitizen platform.

The principal secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, Engineer John Tanui, stated that his department is tasked with implementing technology that facilitates the operational functions of various state departments.

“Our department has been instrumental in providing a definitive technical solution for the eCitizen platform.”

“In our collaborative framework, the State Department for eCitizen Services is responsible for all aspects of Citizen Services, the State Department for ICT oversees technology-related issues, and the National Treasury manages revenue collection matters,” Bitok remarked.

DCI: We did not abduct Kibet Bull

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has refuted any connections to the alleged abduction of Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull.

This statement follows claims made by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who asserted that Kibet was taken after departing from his office on December 24, 2024. Omtatah noted that he observed Subaru vehicles stationed outside his office on that date while he was meeting with Kibet and others regarding his presidential ambitions.

“I am convinced that DCI officers were involved in his abduction. Upon Kibet’s arrival at my office, my security team informed me that they were monitoring a Subaru equipped with surveillance devices intended for intercepting communications. This vehicle was parked directly across the street from my office and departed only after Mr. Kibet left,” Omtatah stated.

He further mentioned that upon discovering the abduction, his team investigated the unidentified vehicle through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which revealed that it was registered to an individual named Caroline.

In a prompt response, the DCI asserted that the vehicle in question is not associated with them, labeling the allegations as “not only baseless but also an exaggeration of a delicate matter currently under comprehensive investigation.”

“The Inspector General (IG) has made it clear that all police operations are executed in accordance with the Constitution and established legal protocols. The DCI endorses this position and assures the public that no extrajudicial actions will be permitted within our organization,” the DCI stated.

The investigative agency emphasized its commitment to addressing the increasing incidents of abductions and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to law enforcement.

As of December 26, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported seven abduction cases in December 2024, with six individuals still unaccounted for.

The missing individuals include Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Wanyiri Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Naomi (who has been located), Rony Kiplang’at, and Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull.
