Four young Kenyans who were abducted in December 2024 have made contact with their families.
On Monday morning, the relatives of Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat reported that their loved ones had reached out to them. Mwangi and Muteti were able to reunite with their families in person.
It was confirmed that Rony was located in Machakos County, while Bernard Kavuli, who was taken from Ngong, was found in Kitale.
Peter Muteti was discovered in Nairobi’s Central Business District, with his family noting that he is currently disoriented but recovering at home.
As of the latest updates, the location of cartoonist Kibet Bull remains unknown. His family has only received information from Rony Kiplangat, Kibet’s brother, who went missing prior to the cartoonist’s abduction.
Steve Mbisi, another individual reported missing, has yet to be located.
A 12-year-old girl tragically drowned on Saturday while swimming in the swollen waters of the Kipsonoi River in Bomet County.
Witnesses reported that the girl was swimming with three friends when the incident occurred. Lenny Kirui, the local chief of Chemagel, confirmed that the accident took place around 4:00 PM.
“One young girl drowned, while three others were saved by herders who heard their cries for help from a distance,” stated Kirui.
The chief further mentioned that the three rescued girls were promptly taken to Sotik Health Centre for treatment and were later discharged.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the girls had gone to the river to wash their school uniforms in preparation for the upcoming school term next week, and they decided to swim, which led to this unfortunate event,” added the chief.
Local residents have been searching the river for the girl’s body, but their efforts have been hindered by the high water levels. As of midday on Sunday, January 5, the body had not yet been recovered.
Divers from Bomet County are currently assisting in the search efforts.
The National Police Service (NPS) has refuted claims regarding the abduction of a young man named Ibrahim Mwiti, whose body was discovered at the mortuary of Thika Level 5 Hospital.
Earlier media reports suggested that the 24-year-old was an activist who had gone missing under mysterious circumstances, with his body found on January 2.
In a statement released on Sunday, the NPS clarified that Mwiti was not an activist, as indicated by a statement from his mother recorded on January 4, 2025.
“The National Police Service has expressed deep concern over the unverified media reports suggesting that Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti was abducted prior to his tragic death,” the police stated.
The NPS provided an account of the events leading to Mwiti’s demise, asserting that it was the result of a hit-and-run incident.
According to police records, Mwiti was last seen on November 11, 2024, and his mother reported him missing at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15.
“Importantly, his body was discovered by Juja Traffic Police on November 12, 2024, shortly after midnight, after he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while riding a hired motorcycle with registration number KMFG 807C in the Spur Mall area along the Thika Super Highway,” the police reported.
The NPS noted that Mwiti’s body could not be identified at the accident scene due to the absence of identification documents and was subsequently transported to General Kago Hospital Mortuary as an unidentified individual.
“Fingerprints of the deceased were collected by Juja Traffic Police, submitted to the National Registration Bureau, and the results, dated November 21, 2024, confirmed the identity of the body as Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti.”
Additionally, police mentioned that Mwiti’s mother swore an affidavit on January 2, 2025, to prevent a post-mortem examination of his body in accordance with her religious beliefs.
The NPS urged caution against the spread of “unverified and misleading information that could incite public unrest.”
Mwiti was interred on January 3, 2025, with the public associating his death with the recent reports of abductions occurring in the country.
A senior official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was tragically killed during a robbery at her residence in Utange, Mombasa County, on Sunday.
Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, aged 48, served as the elections manager for IEBC in Kilifi County. She and her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan, were assaulted around 3 a.m. by two assailants at their home.
The son sustained serious injuries and was subsequently admitted to a local hospital, according to police reports.
The perpetrators made off with electronic items from the residence before fleeing the scene.
Police were alerted by officials at Premier Hospital regarding the death of a robbery victim who had been admitted there.
Upon investigation, it was determined that the assailants invaded the home around 3 a.m. in Utange Mkunguni, attacking both the mother and son. One of the attackers was reportedly wearing a face mask.
They gained entry by cutting through the kitchen window grills while armed with a crowbar and a knife.
The deceased suffered stab wounds and lacerations to her head, particularly above the right eye, while her son was also injured on the head.
Following the assault, the gang stole the deceased’s mobile phone, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and an iPad, after injuring her son.
The son managed to drive his mother to Premier Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, while he received treatment and had not yet been discharged.
Police later conducted a visit to the scene as part of their investigation to locate the individuals responsible for the attack.
The IEBC has not yet released a statement regarding this incident.
Authorities indicated that they are following several leads in connection with the attack.
A peculiar event has ignited fervent discussions after a woman declined a car presented to her by her son, asserting that it was associated with Freemasonry.
The incident, which was recorded and widely circulated, featured the mother rejecting a brand-new vehicle, referring to it as a “coffin.”
This dramatic moment took place in front of neighbors and friends who had gathered to celebrate the car’s presentation.
The son is said to be a prosperous businessman and musician, with his success in the music industry reflected in the lavish car intended for his mother.
However, the gesture did not go as planned, as the mother publicly refused the gift, expressing concerns about the origins of her son’s wealth.
In an interview with the media, the distraught mother claimed that her son’s fortune was linked to Freemasonry.
“I cannot accept this car; it is not a gift but a coffin. Please take it back,” she stated.
Her comments were made with strong conviction, as she voiced her fears and distrust regarding the wealth her son had accumulated in a relatively short time.
“While I acknowledge he has been a musician for many years, the millions he has earned are beyond my understanding. He is not a businessman; he is a killer, and I say this because many in our family have suffered because of him.
He is pursuing his own interests, not those of the family, and he is involved with the Freemasons,” the mother elaborated.
Witnesses at the scene described the encounter as deeply emotional, with the mother resolutely holding her position despite efforts from onlookers to change her mind.
She remained steadfast in her belief that the gift was tainted, insisting that she could not accept wealth acquired through what she deemed “ungodly means.”
A traffic police officer tragically lost his life after being struck by a speeding vehicle while he and his team were addressing a stalled Tuktuk on the Thika Highway in Thika, Kiambu County.
Corporal James Mutunga was a member of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit (NCTPU) within the traffic department.
The NCTPU collaborates with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to oversee traffic management on the country’s major highways.
According to his colleagues, Mutunga was working alongside officials from KeNHA when they stopped to assist with the stalled Tuktuk, at which point a fast-moving car collided with them.
The officers routinely patrol the roads to ensure efficient traffic flow and address various issues, including the vandalism of road signs.
The vehicle, traveling from Kenol towards Thika, crashed into the Tuktuk and also struck three pedestrians before coming to a halt on the morning of Wednesday, January 1.
The collision resulted in severe head injuries for Officer Mutunga, who was immediately taken to Thika Level Four Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Tuktuk driver sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The KeNHA officials involved suffered minor injuries and were treated before being discharged in stable condition.
The deceased officer’s body has been transferred to General Kago Funeral Home for an autopsy.
Both vehicles involved in the incident have been towed to the police station for further inspection.
The NCTPU’s mission includes combating cargo theft and addressing general crime along the Northern Corridor route.
The establishment of this unit was part of a broader initiative to enhance the efficiency of goods transportation, following government warnings against the ongoing theft of goods in transit, which led to the formation of a joint task force.
This unit has taken over from the Highway Patrol Unit (HPU), which was originally created for similar purposes but primarily focused on traffic management.

On Thursday, a dramatic scene unfolded in Tinderet, Nandi County, as thousands of furious residents stormed the Chemase Police Post. They freed a murder suspect, then stoned him to death and burned his body.
The suspect, Victor Kimutai, 30, was linked to the gruesome murder of a 38-year-old man, whose dismembered body was discovered.
Tinderet Police Commander Johnson Mwariga reported that the suspect admitted to the crime and led officers to where he had hidden the victim’s head and other remains.
This revelation sparked outrage among over 3,000 locals, who demanded the suspect’s release. When police refused, the crowd went wild, setting a police vehicle on fire and overpowering the officers to reach the suspect in his cell.
After rescuing him, they killed him with stones and burned his body before scattering in different directions, according to a police report.
The National Police Service (NPS) condemned the violence, urging the public not to take the law into their own hands.
NPS Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango stated, “We ask the public to allow the law to take its course after an arrest. The destruction of police property, like the vehicle burned at Chemase, only hinders our ability to serve the community. We encourage cooperation with police to improve local security.”
Denzel Dumfries scored both goals as Inter Milan won 2-0 against Atalanta on Thursday in Riyadh, securing a spot in the Italian Super Cup final.
The Dutch player gave the Serie A champions the lead just four minutes into the second half with an impressive close-range goal.
Dumfries added his second with a powerful shot from the edge of the box an hour into the match, ensuring Inter’s place in the final on January 6 against either Juventus or AC Milan.
Juventus, last season’s Italian Cup winners, will face Milan on Friday in the second semi-final of the four-team tournament held in Saudi Arabia, which is hosting the Super Cup for the third consecutive year.
Sergio Conceicao will lead his first game as Milan’s coach after taking over from Paulo Fonseca earlier this week.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani have arrested Meshack Kipleting Tarbei, who is suspected of being a serial fraudster and serves as the Director of Motorshop E.A Ltd.
The DCI reports that Tarbei had evaded capture for over a year after allegedly defrauding numerous individuals of their savings.
Operating from an office that was previously situated at Marsabit Plaza along Ngong Road, Tarbei reportedly shut down his business unexpectedly, prompting at least nine victims to lodge complaints at the Kilimani Police Station.
“Following the receipt of these complaints, detectives initiated a search for the suspect, who was located at his hideout in King Serenity Estate in Rongai. He was subsequently escorted to the DCI Kilimani offices for processing in anticipation of arraignment,” stated the agency.
Tarbei is currently at the DCI Kilimani offices, where he is undergoing processing in preparation for his court appearance.
Authorities believe there may be further victims who have reported similar cases at various police stations across Nairobi, and they are working to consolidate all complaints to ensure that justice is served comprehensively for all affected individuals.
