The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into the death of a robbery with violence suspect who allegedly took his own life while being held at the Kisumu Central Police Station last week.

According to IPOA Nyanza Regional Coordinator Paul Murkomen, the authority has already recorded statements from the officers who were on duty when the incident occurred.

Deceased Identified as Kelvin Oduor, Alias Kevo

Murkomen identified the deceased as Kelvin Oduor, also known by his alias Kevo. He added that IPOA is currently working to trace Oduor’s family to assist in the ongoing inquiry.

“The investigation aims to determine whether the death was self-inflicted or if foul play was involved,” Murkomen stated.

Post-Mortem to Establish Cause of Death

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to establish the exact cause of Oduor’s death. IPOA emphasized that the findings will guide further action and ensure accountability if any wrongdoing is uncovered.

Arrest and Alleged Suicide

Reports indicate that Oduor had been arrested on Monday, October 27, in connection with a robbery with violence case. He had been remanded for 14 days pending his next court appearance.

However, on Friday, October 31, he was reportedly found hanging in the bathroom of the police cells. Officers at the station claimed that he had taken his own life.

Paramount Bank Limited came in third, with a deposit rate of 10.13%, reflecting the bank’s focus on attractive savings and investment products for both individuals and businesses.

Meanwhile, Kingdom Bank Limited and Middle East Bank (K) Limited each offered 9.53%, ranking among the top five institutions rewarding savers with above-average returns.

What Higher Deposit Rates Mean for Savers

These higher deposit interest rates allow customers to earn more from their savings, offering a stronger incentive to deposit and retain funds in these banks.

Financial experts note that such rates often signal aggressive deposit mobilization, as banks seek to fund lending and investment activities while appealing to savers in a competitive market.

“Banks offering double-digit deposit rates are likely positioning themselves to expand lending portfolios while rewarding customer loyalty,” said a Nairobi-based financial analyst.

Nairobi, Kenya — Standard Chartered Bank Kenya recorded the lowest deposit interest rate in the country for September 2025, standing at just 3.23%, according to the latest data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

The rate is notably below those offered by other commercial banks, reflecting a growing gap in deposit returns across Kenya’s banking sector.

Other Banks Offer Higher Rates

Citibank N.A Kenya and Premier Bank Kenya Limited both offered deposit interest rates of 5.86%, while the Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited provided a slightly higher rate of 6.04%.

At the upper end of the comparison, HFC Limited offered depositors 6.35%, the highest among the sampled institutions.

These figures demonstrate a significant variation in returns available to Kenyan savers depending on where they bank.

What Lower Deposit Rates Mean for Savers

Lower deposit rates mean that customers earn less interest on their savings, potentially impacting long-term wealth accumulation and savings growth.

However, financial analysts note that banks offering lower returns often attract deposits due to their brand trust, wider branch networks, and digital convenience, rather than the lure of higher interest earnings.

“For many Kenyans, convenience and reliability matter more than marginal differences in returns,” said a Nairobi-based financial analyst.

Wider Implications for Kenyan Savers

The disparity in deposit rates underscores the importance of comparing financial institutions before choosing where to save.

Experts recommend that savers regularly review their bank’s rates and consider alternative saving products such as fixed deposit accounts, money market funds, or SACCO investments, which often offer better yields.
