Kiambu: Woman stabs house intruder to death

A file image of a bloody knife

A woman fatally stabbed a man who allegedly broke into her residence in Kerwa Town, Kiambu County.

Authorities reported that they have interviewed the woman to gather further details regarding the incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 5.

The deceased was discovered lying in the woman’s home with multiple stab wounds to the chest.

According to the woman, the man entered her house without consent, which led to a confrontation where she used a kitchen knife in self-defense.

She stated that she was asleep when she was awakened by noises coming from the living room.

This prompted her to confront the intruder, resulting in the fatal stabbing.

Police recovered the bloodied kitchen knife, which has been retained as evidence in the murder investigation.

The body has been transported to the mortuary for an autopsy and further inquiries.

Kiambu police commander Michael Muchiri confirmed that an investigation is underway.

In response to rising incidents of armed robberies, security measures have been intensified in various regions of the country.

New Law Puts an End to Harassment of Borrowers

It is now prohibited for microfinance companies to engage in harassment of borrowers following the implementation of a new law.

The Business Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which revised the Microfinance Act, came into effect on January 1, 2025.

According to the new legislation, non-deposit-taking microfinance lenders are forbidden from harassing, abusing, or oppressing borrowers, guarantors, or any individuals involved in debt recovery.

Threatening behavior, violence, or any unlawful methods in the process of debt collection are now illegal.

Additionally, the use of obscene or profane language directed at borrowers, guarantors, or anyone associated with loan recovery is also prohibited.

The law requires these companies to provide borrowers with clear and accurate information regarding loan terms and financial obligations while ensuring the confidentiality of borrower data.

Lenders must also inform borrowers about the procedures and conditions related to lending and debt recovery.

Reports have indicated that some digital lenders have employed harsh debt recovery practices.

Borrowers who default, even by a single day, have claimed to receive threatening communications.

The Business Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 aims to broaden the regulatory authority of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to encompass non-deposit-taking credit providers, including digital lenders, peer-to-peer lenders, and credit guarantee firms.

The objective is to foster fair practices, ensure financial stability, and enhance consumer protection through licensing, credit information sharing, and more stringent oversight.

Furthermore, it shifts the regulation of non-deposit-taking microfinance entities from the Microfinance Act to the CBK Act.

This transition introduces new transparency requirements, including the obligation to disclose all credit costs and borrower rights.

The Bill, introduced by the Leader of the Majority Party, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, aimed to amend nine Acts of Parliament to improve regulatory oversight, streamline processes, and promote economic stability.

Justice Served: Farmhand Receives 15-Year Jail Sentence for Assaulting Sick Woman

A farmhand has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for assaulting a woman he was employed to care for, who later died from her injuries in the hospital.

Kenneth Choker was hired by Wilson Sawil in 2016 to assist Rosaline Sawil, who had been battling hypomania, a psychiatric disorder characterized by heightened energy and mood fluctuations, since 2003.

Due to her condition, Rosaline often exhibited rude behavior and uncontrollable anger towards her caregivers. Choker was subsequently charged with manslaughter and found guilty.

His appeal to the Court of Appeal was unsuccessful in December of the previous year, as three judges determined that the evidence against him was substantial and that the sentence was appropriate.

In January 2019, Rosaline’s husband learned that Choker had assaulted her with a hoe in an attempt to restrain her.

He struck her in the neck and right hip, explaining that he did so “to instill fear in her.”

The widower testified in court that his wife had a volatile temperament.

A postmortem examination revealed blue discoloration on her body, along with a 6cm long sutured incision on the right side of her neck and another incision on her back.

The examination also indicated that her lungs were swollen due to pulmonary edema, a condition caused by excess fluid in the lungs.

In its final ruling on November 5, 2019, the High Court concluded that malice aforethought was not established and found Choker guilty of manslaughter.

In affirming the ruling, the judges of the Court of Appeal expressed their satisfaction that the trial judge had not acted on any erroneous principles and had considered all relevant factors.

They stated, “We do not view the sentence as excessive given the circumstances of this case,” and therefore chose not to alter it.

Tears of Joy: Kibet Bull’s Mothers Relief as Son is Found Safe

Caroline Mutai, Kibet Bull's mother.

Social media influencer and cartoonist Kibet Bull has announced his release following an alleged abduction that occurred two weeks ago.

Kibet reported that he was dropped off in Luanda, Vihiga County, during the early hours of Monday, between 3 am and 4 am.

His mother, Caroline Mutai, confirmed his release, stating that Kibet reached out to her around 10 am, identifying himself and indicating that he was on his way home.

“We are very happy now; we have lit candles. He told me he is in Nakuru,” she shared.

Caroline expressed that the festive season had been a difficult time for her due to her son’s disappearance.

“I wept; while other families were celebrating, I was in tears, reading the Bible,” she recounted.

She vowed to host a celebration for her two sons who have returned home safely.

Kibet’s younger brother, Rony Kibet, was also located alive on Monday morning in Machakos.

In a statement made shortly after his release, Kibet mentioned that he chose to post on X to inform the public of his safety and his journey home.

“I found myself in Luanda around 3 am to 4 am. I sought a place to stay until morning for my safety, as I was unfamiliar with the area,” he explained.

He also indicated that he would be reducing his activity on social media.

On the same day, two additional youths who had reportedly been abducted in December were also released by their alleged captors.

This brought the total number of individuals released by alleged abductors to four.

The families of Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, and Bernard Kavuli reported that their loved ones had made contact with them.

Mwangi and Muteti were able to reunite with their families in person.

Authorities confirmed that Rony was found in Machakos County, while Bernard Kavuli, who had been taken from Ngong, was located in Kitale.

They were reportedly having difficulty reaching their families.

Peter Muteti was discovered in Nairobi’s central business district, where witnesses noted he appeared disoriented and was recovering at home.

Human rights activists organized a protest on Monday, January 6, to condemn abductions and forced disappearances.

Police were deployed to various locations to manage the potential protests.

Former Prison Guard Sentenced over sex with inmate

Linda De Sousa Abreu has been jailed for 15 months

A former officer at HMP Wandsworth has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being recorded engaging in sexual activity with an inmate.

Linda De Sousa Abreu was recognized by senior prison officials after the video was disseminated online and rapidly gained widespread attention.

The governor of Wandsworth Prison remarked that Abreu’s conduct had effectively reversed years of progress made by female staff in male-only facilities in less than a day.

At the age of 30, Abreu was apprehended at Heathrow Airport while attempting to board a flight to Madrid with her father. She had previously entered a guilty plea for misconduct in public office.

In a written statement presented to Isleworth Crown Court, Andrew Davy, the governor of Wandsworth Prison, noted that numerous female employees had reported an increase in unwanted advances from inmates, leading to a perception that they were now “considered fair game.”

The incident occurred at Wandsworth Prison between June 26 and June 28.

The court was informed that an additional recording of Abreu engaging in a sexual act with the same inmate was discovered on her prison-issued body-worn camera, and she acknowledged having sexual relations with that inmate on another occasion.

Judge Martin Edmunds KC indicated that the viral video was not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a pattern of behavior.

A representative from the Prison Service stated, “While the vast majority of Prison Service staff are dedicated and honest, we are increasingly identifying the small minority who violate regulations by enhancing our Counter Corruption Unit and improving our vetting procedures. Today’s sentencing illustrates our commitment to taking decisive action against officers who fail to meet our high standards.”

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA), which represents prison personnel, acknowledged the existence of a small number of corrupt staff members who compromise the integrity of their colleagues’ work.

Woman Attacked by Crocodile while fetching water at Lake Victoria

A 32-year-old woman tragically lost her life following an attack by a crocodile at Kopiata beach in Siaya County on Sunday evening.

The victim, identified as Elizabeth Akinyi Oketch, had gone to the beach along the shores of Lake Victoria to collect water when the incident occurred.

Acting Assistant Chief Esau Oduru reported that the woman was accompanied by her daughter and had filled four out of the six containers they were carrying when the crocodile struck.

Oduru recounted that the crocodile attacked, dragging the woman into the water while her daughter looked on in horror.

Although the daughter was unharmed, she raised the alarm, prompting members of the community to rush to the beach; however, their attempts to save her mother were unsuccessful.

The administrator confirmed that local fishermen, with the assistance of the public, later recovered the body from the lake.

Oduru further noted that the severely mutilated body was subsequently transported to the mortuary at Madiany sub-county hospital for a postmortem examination.

Ministry of education admits challenges in rollout of pioneer Grade 9

The Ministry of Education has reported encountering challenges as it prepares to introduce the inaugural Grade 9 cohort.

During a press briefing on Monday, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ indicated that there is a shortage of classrooms to accommodate the students, necessitating creative solutions to “ensure that we do not disrupt learning.”

Kipsang’ mentioned that certain classrooms will experience overcrowding for a period of 30 days while the Ministry undertakes efforts to construct additional facilities.

“In instances where overcrowding is unmanageable, we may implement a multi-shift system, allowing one group to utilize the classroom while another engages in outdoor activities,” he explained.

He further stated that the Ministry intends to allocate Ksh.16 billion to finalize the construction of the classrooms.

To date, Kipsang’ reported that 13,500 classrooms have been completed out of the target of 16,000.

The Ministry is in the process of constructing 11,000 classrooms, while the remaining facilities will be funded through the NG-County Development Fund (CDF).

According to Kipsang’, the Ministry has successfully built 10,500 classrooms, and the NG-CDF has contributed 3,000.

Additionally, 9.9 million textbooks have been distributed to various primary schools hosting Grade 9 classes.

Moreover, the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) has deployed 46,000 teachers who were previously on internship, along with an additional group of 20,000 teachers.

However, Kipsang’ emphasized that the current number of teachers remains inadequate, and further recruitment is necessary to match the student population.

This situation arises as the country progresses in the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) rollout.

The CBC initiative has faced challenges, including inadequate funding, lack of preparedness, and unexpected changes to subject clusters, as observed in recent developments.

Concerns persist regarding the government’s readiness to accommodate Grade 9 students in 2025, particularly in light of the insufficient facilities and teaching staff.

Trading Resumes for Kenya Airways Shares on Nairobi Securities Exchange

Kenya Airways

The Nairobi Securities Exchange has announced the lifting of the suspension on trading shares of Kenya Airways (KQNA.NR), as stated on Monday.

According to the exchange, “The suspension on the trading of Kenya Airways PLC shares was lifted due to the company’s recent performance, which included a profit after tax and the retraction of the National Aviation Management Bill 2020.”

The shares of Kenya Airways were suspended in 2020 following the government’s proposal to renationalize the airline, a plan that ultimately did not materialize.

As one of the three largest carriers in Africa, Kenya Airways faced insolvency in 2018 after an aggressive expansion strategy resulted in substantial debt.

On its final trading day, March 2, 2020, the stock was valued at 3.83 shillings per share.

In 2023, the airline reported an operating profit of 10.53 billion shillings ($80.38 million), marking its first profit since 2017.

Roma reigns supreme in thrilling derby victory over Lazio

Roma secured a 2-0 victory over local rivals Lazio on Sunday, marking Claudio Ranieri’s most significant win since he returned to manage his childhood club for the third time.

Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alexis Saelemaekers scored within an eight-minute span in the first half, providing Roma with the necessary points in a tense atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

With this victory, Ranieri’s team has climbed to 10th place with 23 points, still trailing Lazio by 12 points, who occupy the final Champions League position. However, Roma now enjoys a comfortable gap from the relegation zone.

There is a six-point difference between Roma and Lecce, who are just above the relegation zone and played to a 0-0 draw against Genoa earlier on Sunday. Ranieri is gradually steering the capital club back on course.

“It’s wonderful to bring joy to these fans,” stated defender Gianluca Mancini, who conducted his post-match interview wearing a long coat after giving his shorts and shirt to enthusiastic supporters.

“Derbies are always unique encounters, but we must remember that it is just three points; it is not as if we have won the league.”

When Ranieri took over as the third coach of the season in November, Roma was in such turmoil that relegation seemed a real threat.

However, following a promising draw against AC Milan last weekend, Sunday’s performance further indicated that a talented squad is beginning to find its rhythm, marking the 73-year-old’s fifth consecutive victory against Lazio.

Despite the win, Roma faced challenges in the second half, spending much of the time defending as Lazio intensified their efforts to regain control of the match.
