Mass Casualties Reported in Fuel Tanker Explosion Tragedy

A tanker explosion has resulted in the deaths of 77 individuals who had gathered to collect fuel from the site, according to authorities.

The incident occurred when the tanker overturned and released its contents in the Suleja region of North Central Niger state on Saturday.

The explosion took place shortly after individuals began to scoop up the spilled fuel, leading to numerous fatalities and injuring 25 others, including rescue personnel, as reported by officials.

Explosions and accidents involving fuel tankers are frequent in Nigeria, often attributed to the poor condition of roads and inadequately maintained vehicles.

Those injured in the explosion are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals, as stated by the emergency management agency.

In recent months, Nigeria has experienced several similar incidents.

Just two weeks prior, a fuel tanker involved in a collision exploded in the oil-rich Delta state, resulting in at least five fatalities, while an explosion in October claimed the lives of at least 153 individuals who were attempting to collect leaking petrol.

Fuel prices have surged by over 400% in the past 18 months due to significant economic reforms implemented by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, which included the elimination of long-standing fuel subsidies.

These changes have plunged millions into poverty, compelling many to resort to desperate measures for survival.

The government asserts that its policies are designed to bolster the economy.

Molo: Protests as activist Richard Otieno found dead

Protests in Molo as activist Richard Otieno found dead

Residents of Elburgon, located in the Molo Constituency of Nakuru County, took to the Elburgon Police Station on Sunday in response to the murder of activist Richard Otieno, known as Molo President.

Otieno was assaulted and killed by unidentified attackers on Saturday night while returning home, a mere 200 meters from the police station.

The outraged residents disrupted local business activities on Sunday morning, demanding accountability from law enforcement.

Otieno had been a vocal critic of the government and the local Member of Parliament, Kimani Kuria, accusing them of failing to fulfill campaign promises.

The deceased had previously contested for the Elburgon MCA position in 2022 but was unsuccessful. He was also among those arrested during the Gen Z protests in Molo, where he was accused of leading demonstrations in the area.

Disaster Strikes Isiolo: Uncontrolled 3-Day Fire Devastates Grazing Areas

A group comprising elders, residents, and human rights advocates in Isiolo County has urged both the county and national governments to take immediate action to extinguish a fire that ignited three days ago in Merti Sub County, which has already devastated over ten square kilometers of grazing land.

Under the leadership of Mohamed Konso, chairperson of the Borana Council of Elders, the group expressed grave concerns regarding potential widespread livestock fatalities and the destruction of homes and local institutions if the fire is not swiftly controlled.

The blaze, which originated in Merti, has already affected grazing areas utilized by herders in Matarba, Korbesa, and Malkagalla, and is now advancing towards Iresaboru, Badana, and Sericho. There are increasing worries that if the fire continues to spread unchecked, it may soon encroach upon residential zones, leading to further devastation.

Konso emphasized that despite the fire burning for over 72 hours, there has been no governmental response to address the situation. He urged both the national and county authorities to treat this disaster as an emergency and act promptly to extinguish the flames before they reach inhabited areas.

While the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, it is believed to be accidental. Abdullahi Hajj Gonjobe, a Borana elder, suggested that herders may have inadvertently left a cooking fire unattended in the bushes, and noted that local herders also engage in wild honey harvesting, which could have contributed to the outbreak.

The elders highlighted that the amount of pasture already lost to the fire could have sustained both livestock and wildlife for an additional two years. The repercussions of this disaster are expected to significantly impact the livelihoods of the local community in the foreseeable future.

They pointed out that local residents have made considerable efforts to combat the fire, but their attempts have been unsuccessful due to a lack of adequate equipment. The community has appealed to the government to act swiftly and deploy aircraft to expedite the firefighting efforts before further damage occurs.

Kenya Steps Up Efforts to Combat Gang Activity in Haiti with 200 More Police

Kenya dispatched over 200 police officers to Haiti on Saturday, reinforcing a security mission in the Caribbean nation that is grappling with severe gang violence, which has resulted in the displacement of more than one million individuals.

Approximately ten nations have collectively committed more than 3,100 troops to Haiti as part of a United Nations-supported anti-gang initiative; however, the actual deployment has been limited thus far.

Kipchumba Murkomen, Kenya’s Interior Minister, announced that the new contingent consists of 217 police officers from Kenya, who will augment the roughly 400 officers deployed the previous year.

“Our dedication to this significant mission remains steadfast, and we will persist in rallying all necessary international support to ensure its success,” he stated in a social media update.

Upon welcoming the troops, Haitian President Fritz Alphonse Jean expressed gratitude to Kenya for its steadfast assistance in combating gang violence in the country, assuring that the safety of the soldiers would be prioritized.

“We extend a warm welcome to our brothers from Kenya. The previous Kenyan troops have been diligently engaged, and during these trying times, we require friends like you,” he remarked.

Kenya’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, encouraged the officers to stay alert and assist the war-torn nation in restoring peace.

“Since the initial deployment, the officers have conducted successful operations against gangs. I urge them to uphold the established standards of excellence as they work to achieve their objectives,” he stated.

Kenya has taken the lead in staffing the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, initially pledging to send a total of 1,000 personnel.

However, Reuters reported last month that nearly 20 individuals from the initial deployment had submitted resignation letters from the anti-gang mission, citing delays in pay and inadequate conditions.

In response, the MSS in Haiti, which is overseen by senior Kenyan police officials, asserted that its personnel had received their salaries and that no resignations had been reported.

Political Tensions Rise as Gachagua Points Fingers at Government for Wifes Meeting Disruption

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has directed criticism towards the government following an incident where a prayer meeting organized by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was disrupted by Maina Njenga and a group of young individuals.

The event took place at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri County on Saturday, during which Njenga unexpectedly entered, leading to chaos and ultimately prompting Pastor Dorcas to leave the venue.

In defense of his wife, Gachagua took to X to accuse the State of orchestrating the disruption, labeling Njenga as a gang leader intent on inciting disorder within the country.

“Allowing the leader of an outlawed criminal organization and his associates to interrupt peaceful prayers and violate the sanctity of the altar represents the lowest point any government can reach, regardless of its level of desperation,” he stated.

This incident occurs amidst escalating political tensions in the Mt. Kenya region following Gachagua’s impeachment from his influential position in the government.

He has since launched a vigorous critique against the State and President William Ruto, cautioning the local populace to remain vigilant regarding Ruto’s intentions in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Njenga’s reappearance after Gachagua’s removal has fueled speculation that he may be positioned to challenge Gachagua and influence the politically significant region in favor of President Ruto.

However, the former Mungiki leader has refuted assertions that he is acting as Ruto’s representative in the central region.

He has also ridiculed Gachagua’s accusations, stating: “He (Gachagua) wants to take me to The Hague yet he is powerless. That is merely empty talk.”

TikTok Vanishes from US App Stores, Leaving Users in the Dark

TikTok ceased operations in the United States late Saturday and was removed from both Apple and Google app stores in anticipation of a law that is set to take effect on Sunday, mandating the app’s shutdown, which is utilized by 170 million Americans.

President-elect Donald Trump indicated earlier in the day that he would “most likely” grant TikTok a 90-day extension from the ban following his inauguration on Monday, a commitment that TikTok referenced in a message to its users.

The app, owned by China’s ByteDance, informed users attempting to access it around 10:45 p.m. ET (0345 GMT): “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned.”

Additionally, other applications owned by ByteDance, such as the video editing tool Capcut and the lifestyle social platform Lemon8, were also offline and inaccessible in U.S. app stores as of late Saturday.

“The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate,” Trump stated in an interview with NBC. “If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.”

It remains uncertain whether any U.S. users could still access the app, but many reported that it was no longer functional, and those attempting to use it via a web application encountered the same notification indicating that TikTok was no longer operational.

TikTok, which has engaged nearly half of the American population, supported small businesses, and influenced online culture, cautioned on Friday that it would cease operations in the U.S. on Sunday unless the Biden administration provided assurances to companies like Apple and Google that they would not face enforcement actions when the ban is implemented.

According to a law enacted last year and upheld by a unanimous Supreme Court ruling on Friday, the platform must sever ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or shut down its U.S. operations by Sunday to address concerns regarding national security threats.

Authorities have initiated investigations into the recent and perplexing murder of a young woman, whose remains were discovered abandoned near the Lang’ata Cemetery in Nairobi.

In this unsettling case, the woman’s body was found in a dense area, partially clothed and bearing multiple stab wounds.

The family of the deceased, identified as Nancy Boke Chacha, reported her missing prior to receiving a distressing notification from the police regarding her death.

Detectives from the Nairobi region, along with officers from the Langa’ta Police Station, meticulously searched the surrounding forest for potential evidence.

Initial findings indicated that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Nearby her body were her undergarments, a sharp knife, and an identification card.

The scene suggested a possible altercation had taken place. However, law enforcement officials have stated that it remains uncertain whether the murder occurred in proximity to the cemetery or if she was killed elsewhere and subsequently abandoned in the thicket.

Forensic analysis has confirmed the identity of the victim as 23-year-old Nancy Boke Chacha.

Investigators are now retracing Boke’s final moments to identify her companions prior to the murder and to map her last movements.

Her remains are currently being held at the Nairobi Funeral Home, pending an autopsy, as a manhunt for the individuals responsible begins.

Arteta: Arsenal must take blame for Villa fightback

Mikel Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal must accept responsibility for their disappointing 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, attributing the setback to careless defending that hindered their pursuit of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brentford earlier on Saturday, Arsenal faced immense pressure to secure a win against Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta’s team appeared poised to close the gap to four points behind Liverpool after Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz found the net, establishing a two-goal advantage by the 55th minute.

However, Arsenal faltered in the latter part of the second half, as Youri Tielemans narrowed the scoreline before Ollie Watkins, a lifelong Arsenal supporter, equalized just eight minutes later.

This result dealt a significant blow to Arsenal’s aspirations of clinching their first title since 2004, with Liverpool now six points ahead and possessing a game in hand over the second-placed team from north London.

Arteta admitted that the defensive errors that allowed Villa to equalize were unacceptable.

“I take pride in the way the players performed and competed, especially considering it was the third match in six days. They delivered an outstanding performance and deserved more,” he stated.

“However, the manner in which we defended, particularly on the second goal, is not acceptable.”

“Conceding two goals cannot be part of our approach if we aim to win consistently. It falls far short of the standards we expect,” Arteta emphasized.

Arsenal has managed to secure only one victory in their last five matches across all competitions, a troubling run that includes an FA Cup exit against a 10-man Manchester United and a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.

Although Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over north London rivals Tottenham seemed to rejuvenate Arsenal, their inconsistency this season resurfaced at a critical juncture.

Fatal Crash Results in Double Fatality on Busy Machakos-Kitui Road

Two individuals have lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the Machakos – Kitui road in Kaseve, Machakos County.

According to Machakos County police commander Patrick Lobolia, the deceased included the driver of a Probox vehicle and a passenger.

Lobolia reported that 14 other individuals, who were passengers in a 14-seater matatu, suffered injuries and were promptly transported to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred on Friday evening and was subsequently documented at the Machakos police station as a fatal traffic accident.

“Two individuals died at the scene following a head-on collision between a Probox and a 14-seater passenger matatu along the Machakos – Kitui road in the Kaseve area of Machakos subcounty on Friday,” stated Lobolia.

He further explained that the matatu was en route to Machakos town while the Probox was heading towards Kitui when the collision took place.

“Two individuals perished instantly, while 14 others sustained minor injuries as a result of the head-on collision,” Lobolia added.

He indicated that the Probox reportedly lost control, veering into the lane of the matatu, which led to the accident.

Traffic officers from the Machakos police station arrived at the scene to clear the area and remove the wreckage and bodies.

The deceased were taken to the mortuary at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they await postmortem examinations and identification.

Lobolia mentioned that the wreckage has been transported to the Machakos police station for inspection and further action.
