Second body of missing Mlolongo men found at City mortuary

The remains of Martin Mwau, the second of three men who vanished in Mlolongo last December, have been discovered at the Nairobi Funeral Home, previously known as City Mortuary.

This revelation follows the identification of Justus Mutumwa’s body at the same location.

Mutumwa had disappeared on December 16, 2024, alongside Mwau and Karani Muema. For over a month, their families have been desperately seeking answers about their sudden disappearance.

According to Mutumwa’s relatives, his body was retrieved from Ruai and transported to the mortuary on December 18, just two days after he went missing. However, the details surrounding the recovery of Mwau’s body before its arrival at the facility remain unclear.

The finding of Mwau’s body intensifies the concerns regarding the circumstances of the trio’s disappearance and subsequent deaths. Their case has faced repeated denials from high-ranking police officials about their knowledge of the situation.

After failing to respond to several court summons, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin finally appeared in court on Thursday, where they claimed ignorance regarding the missing men’s fates. Amin mentioned that the investigation is still ongoing.

With two of the three missing men now confirmed deceased, there is increasing pressure on authorities to deliver answers and seek justice for the victims and their grieving families. The fate of Karani Muema remains uncertain.

One of missing Mlolongo men found dead in Ruai

The remains of one of the missing men from Mlolongo were discovered at the City Mortuary in Nairobi, as reported by family lawyer Senator Dan Maanzo during a court session on Thursday.

Justus Mutumwa Musyimi’s body was located in the Ruai area before being transported to the mortuary.

Maanzo confirmed that the body was found in Ruai and subsequently taken to the City Mortuary in Nairobi.

“A preliminary examination has verified that this is indeed the body of the missing individual, Mutumwa, who is involved in the ongoing court case. This information has emerged as the proceedings continue,” Maanzo stated.

He called for a comprehensive investigation into the situation.

The family was able to identify the body on Thursday.

The exact time of death and the cause remain unclear, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

These developments occurred as Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin appeared in court, denying that the deceased and two other missing individuals are in their custody.

Residents of Mlolongo, Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau, and Karani Muema, were reportedly abducted on December 16, 2024, and their current status is unknown.

Amin and Kanja informed Justice Chacha Mwita, through their attorney Paul Nyamodi, that the report regarding the three missing youths was filed at the Mlolongo Police Station in Athi River.

Kanja confirmed that the reports of the missing persons were officially logged at Athi River Police Station under OB No. 23/21/12/24 and at Mlolongo Police Station under OB No. 43/25/12/2024.

Kanja reassured the public about their safety, highlighting the security measures implemented during the holiday season.

Amin mentioned that investigations are still underway regarding the case.

In conclusion, Amin stated that under the current circumstances, they are unable to produce the bodies or file any charges.

State Prosecutor Mark Baraza indicated that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has referred the case to the Inspector General for investigation and anticipates receiving the findings.

Violence Erupts in Machakos as Man Pays Ultimate Price for Alleged Homicide Plot Against Uncle

A man was lynched in Kaloleni, Machakos County, after allegedly attempting to murder his uncle.

According to Machakos County police commander Patrick Lobolia, the man faced mob justice after he reportedly attacked his uncle in the Kaloleni area on Wednesday. Enraged locals apprehended him before the situation escalated further.

“The deceased was subjected to mob justice after he tried to kill his uncle,” Lobolia stated in a phone interview with the Star on Thursday.

The uncle was quickly taken to a hospital, while the body of the deceased was transported to the mortuary. This incident occurred just days after another man was lynched in a similar situation in the nearby Kiumoni village, where he was killed by an angry mob after allegedly murdering his mother under mysterious circumstances.

The 30-year-old man had informed his uncles about the crime, which incited the community’s fury, leading to his lynching.

“Both individuals faced mob justice in these separate incidents,” Lobolia remarked, condemning the community’s actions.

He urged residents not to take the law into their own hands, emphasizing that two wrongs do not make a right. “People should refrain from lynching those who commit crimes. It’s essential to remain disciplined and respect the rule of law,” Lobolia advised.

He called on all Kenyans to adhere to the law and report any suspected criminal activities before they escalate, to prevent such tragic events.

“We must stop the violence against parents, which may sometimes be fueled by substance abuse. The public should share information about those involved in drug trade and use, both locally and nationally,” Lobolia concluded.

Man Fatally Electrocuted in Machakos

A 30-year-old man tragically lost his life due to electrocution in Athi River, Machakos County.

Antony Njuguna was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which took place in Jua Kali village on Wednesday.

Philis Muthoni, the police commander for Athi River South subcounty, confirmed that the incident was reported to the local police station as an electrocution case at 5:29 PM that same day.

According to Muthoni, a bystander alerted the authorities that an employee of a private company in Jua Kali village had died after inadvertently coming into contact with a drooping electric cable.

At the time of the accident, Njuguna was with a driver from the same company. “The witness informed the police that around 3:00 PM, the driver was unloading sawdust outside the company’s premises alongside Antony Njuguna, who was approximately 30 years old,” Muthoni explained in a phone interview with the Star on Thursday.

Muthoni detailed that Njuguna accidentally touched a live wire with a metal spade, resulting in the electrocution.

Emergency responders, including police officers and personnel from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, along with staff from Kenya Power and Lighting Company, quickly arrived at the scene.

The police commander noted that crime scene investigators processed the area, and Njuguna’s body was taken to the Shalom Community Hospital mortuary in Athi River, pending an autopsy.

Muthoni also mentioned that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. She urged local residents to exercise caution when working near electrical cables to prevent similar tragedies.

Joho Issues Stern Warning to Foreign Miners Encroaching on Nyanza Site

Cabinet Secretary for Mining and the Blue Economy, Ali Hassan Joho, has issued a stern warning to foreign and large-scale mining companies against encroaching on artisanal gold mining areas in the Nyanza region.

Joho highlighted the prevalence of illegal mining activities being carried out by large-scale miners in Nyanza, emphasizing that this practice must come to an end.

He made it clear that the government will not tolerate any intimidation of artisanal miners by larger operations, stating that these companies must adhere to proper procedures before being permitted to operate.

During his visit to Wich-Lum beach in Bondo sub-county, where he inspected fish landing sites in Siaya County, Joho directed National Government Administration officers to ensure that all illegal operators are apprehended and face legal consequences.

He pointed out that the law mandates thorough public participation and compliance with all necessary procedures prior to the issuance of any mining licenses.

Joho expressed that if mining practices in Nyanza are managed correctly, the region could experience significant socio-economic development.

Regarding the safety of Kenyan fishermen on Lake Victoria, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to address the ongoing attacks by Ugandan authorities once and for all.

Additionally, he visited Usenge and Asembo Bay beaches in Usigu and Rarieda sub-counties, respectively.

Terrifying Collision: Passenger Plane and Helicopter Crash Mid Air

A regional passenger aircraft from Kansas plunged into the frigid waters of the Potomac River in Washington after colliding mid-air with a military helicopter close to Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, according to officials.

This incident triggered a significant emergency response and led to the suspension of all flights in the area.

Details regarding casualties or the number of individuals on board the plane were not immediately available.

The aircraft, a Bombardier regional jet, has a capacity of approximately 78 passengers. Kansas Senator Roger Marshall mentioned on X that the jet was “carrying roughly 60 passengers,” though the source of this information remains unclear.

A U.S. Army representative confirmed that the helicopter involved was a Black Hawk, with three soldiers on board as crew members; their condition is currently unknown.

The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed sources, that police had begun recovering multiple bodies from the Potomac.

Witness Ari Schulman recounted seeing “a stream of sparks” and what resembled a large firework as the collision occurred overhead while he was driving home.

“At first, I saw the plane, and it appeared normal, just about to cross over land,” he told CNN. “Then, just three seconds later, it was tilted sharply to the right… I could see the bright yellow underside, and there was a stream of sparks beneath it. It looked like a Roman candle.”

President Donald Trump stated he had been “fully briefed” on the situation and offered condolences for any victims, saying, “may God bless their souls.”

Airport Emergency: 176 Evacuated from Burning Passenger Plane

A passenger aircraft caught fire before takeoff at Gimhae International Airport late Tuesday, but fortunately, all 176 individuals on board were evacuated safely, according to officials.

The Airbus, operated by Air Busan, was set to depart for Hong Kong when flames erupted from its rear section at Gimhae International Airport in the southeast, as stated by the Korean Transport Ministry.

The evacuation involved 169 passengers, six crew members, and one engineer, who all used an escape slide to exit the aircraft, the ministry reported.

The National Fire Agency noted that three individuals sustained minor injuries during the evacuation process. The fire was fully extinguished by 11:31 p.m., approximately one hour after firefighters and fire trucks were dispatched to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains unclear. The Transport Ministry identified the aircraft as an A321 model.

This incident occurred just a month after a tragic crash involving a Jeju Air passenger plane at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea, which resulted in the deaths of all but two of the 181 people on board. It marked one of the most devastating events in South Korea’s aviation history.

The Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway on December 29 after its landing gear failed to deploy, colliding with a concrete structure and igniting. The flight was returning from Bangkok, and all victims were South Korean, except for two Thai nationals.

A preliminary report released on Monday indicated that authorities have found evidence of bird strikes in the plane’s engines, although the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

Coca-Cola recalls drinks in over high chlorate levels

Coca-Cola announced on Monday a significant recall of its beverages, including Coke and Sprite, after discovering high levels of chlorate, which could pose health risks.

According to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium, cans and glass bottles with elevated chlorate levels were distributed across Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November.

While the company did not provide an exact number, they acknowledged that the quantity involved is substantial. Chlorate can be present in food products as it originates from chlorine disinfectants commonly used in water treatment and food processing.

A 2015 report from the European Food Safety Authority indicated that prolonged exposure to chlorate could be a health concern, particularly for children with mild to moderate iodine deficiency.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium stated that most of the affected products have already been removed from store shelves, and they are actively working to eliminate any remaining items from the market.

However, the company’s French division noted that independent analyses showed the likelihood of any associated risk to be “very low.” They also mentioned that they had not received any consumer complaints regarding this issue.

Some affected batches of Coke and Fuze Tea were sent to France, but the recall does not currently extend to the French market.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners expressed regret over the recall, which was identified during a routine inspection at their Ghent production facility. The affected products carry production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE and include brands like Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico.

The company confirmed that they are in communication with the relevant authorities in each impacted market.
