Machakos: Man’s body found dumped near Athi River-Namanga Road Interchange

A file image of police line tape on crime scene

On Monday afternoon, the Athi River-Namanga Road Interchange became a scene of shock and stillness as residents and drivers were drawn to a body found near a drainage channel along the bustling highway.

The grim discovery, involving a man with a severe cut, quickly spread through the community, especially in light of recent reports about the abduction of four men from Mlolongo—two of whom were later found dead, while the other two remain unaccounted for.

Locals believe the body was dragged from the opposite side of the road, suggesting that the man may have been murdered before being discarded at the interchange.

Human rights advocates have expressed deep concern over this latest murder, highlighting the alarming trend of abductions and extrajudicial killings. They are urging security forces to act swiftly to regain control of a situation that is spiraling out of control.

Hussein Khalid, Executive Director of Vocal Africa, voiced his frustration, stating, “It’s disheartening to see our country turning into a dumping ground for bodies. It feels like every corner is a crime scene, with bodies being found everywhere from rivers to interchanges. We implore security agencies to fulfill their duties, as Kenyans are feeling increasingly unsafe.”

The deceased man, believed to be in his 30s, has been transported to Nairobi Funeral Home.

Detectives from Athi River have launched an investigation into the matter.

CS Mbadi: There will be no more tax on payslips

An uncomfortable seat on the terrace was the least of Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury John Mbadi’s concerns during his first visit to Bunge La Mwananchi, alongside the chair of the Kenya Revenue Authority board.

Mbadi, who has been vocal about government spending, faced criticism for the ongoing deductions from payslips.

“We are not increasing VAT at all. In fact, this year’s finance bill may not include any upward tax adjustments. We cannot impose more taxes on Kenyans; we have reached a point where we must say there is no more room for taxation on employment income,” Mbadi stated.

Members of the public pressed the Cabinet Secretary on government spending, particularly regarding renovations at State House, questioning the government’s priorities in light of its own austerity measures.

“Tumerenovate, so what you need to tell me is don’t spend any more money on renovation isn’t it? Ju hiyo nyumba ukona saizi ni mzuri imekuwa renovated imechukua ile pesa imechukua,” Mbadi responded.

He also faced backlash for using helicopters to travel to his rural home.

“I have taken a chopper on three occasions for government events, including a trip to Tana River. I left Nairobi after a meeting at State House to go to Tana River and back; I’m not sure I could have made it by car,” he explained.

“After that, I had another event in Kisumu. So, let me ask you, when I finish that and want to go home, does the chopper just drop me off on the road and return to Nairobi, leaving me to walk home?”

As the Cabinet Secretary faced increasing scrutiny from the public, he adopted a more conciliatory approach to reassure the skeptical audience that positive changes were on the horizon due to the government’s initiatives. He aimed to justify the deductions, which included the contentious social health insurance fund and the housing levy.

“SHA is an insurance, and insurance doesn’t imply that paying for health means you will inevitably get sick,” Mbadi explained.

OpenAI Unveils Cutting-Edge ChatGPT Research Tool

OpenAI, the prominent US technology firm, introduced a new ChatGPT feature called “deep research” on Monday, coinciding with significant discussions taking place in Tokyo. This launch comes as China’s DeepSeek chatbot intensifies the competition in the AI landscape.

The emergence of DeepSeek has stirred excitement in Silicon Valley, with its impressive capabilities and anticipated affordability urging US developers to accelerate their efforts.

OpenAI, which brought generative AI into the spotlight with ChatGPT in 2022, described its latest tool as one that can achieve in mere minutes what would typically require hours of human effort.

According to a statement, “Deep research is OpenAI’s next agent that operates autonomously for you—simply provide a prompt, and ChatGPT will scour, analyze, and compile information from hundreds of online sources to generate a detailed report akin to that of a research analyst.”

During a livestreamed announcement, OpenAI researchers demonstrated how the tool can aggregate web search results to suggest ski gear for a winter trip to Japan.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is in Tokyo for a meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, alongside Masayoshi Son, the leader of the influential Japanese tech investment firm SoftBank Group.

Both SoftBank and OpenAI are involved in the Stargate initiative, which was unveiled by former US President Donald Trump, aiming to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure across the United States.

Prime Minister Ishiba is anticipated to travel to Washington later this week for his first in-person meeting with Trump.

On Monday afternoon, Altman and Son are set to host a forum in Tokyo, gathering approximately 500 businesses where they are anticipated to reveal initiatives aimed at enhancing Japan’s AI infrastructure.

According to the Nikkei business daily, this initiative will involve the construction of AI data centers and the necessary power plants to support them, although the report did not detail the investment scale involved.

In a separate conversation with the Nikkei, Altman expressed his ambition to create “a new kind of hardware” that leverages artificial intelligence, collaborating with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer.

However, Altman noted that it may take several years before a prototype is ready for presentation, as reported by the Nikkei.

Additionally, Altman mentioned that DeepSeek serves as “a good model” illustrating the intense competition in AI reasoning technology, but he remarked that its “capability level isn’t new.”

The performance of DeepSeek has led to numerous allegations that it has reverse-engineered the functionalities of leading U.S. technologies, including the AI that powers ChatGPT.

AC Milan’s Alvaro Morata completes loan move to Galatasaray

Alvaro Morata has officially joined Galatasaray on loan from AC Milan, as announced by the Turkish champions on Sunday.

Galatasaray confirmed on their website that they have reached an agreement with AC Milan for the transfer.

The loan deal is set to run until January 20, 2026, at which point the club will have the option to purchase or extend the loan.

The Turkish side disclosed that they have paid a temporary transfer fee of 6 million euros (approximately 6.14 million dollars) to Milan, and Morata will earn 3 million euros for the remainder of this season.

In a promotional image, Morata was seen donning the club’s iconic yellow and red halved jersey.

“I will give my all while wearing the Galatasaray jersey. It’s a beautiful kit,” he stated. “I promise to put in maximum effort on the pitch and fight for this jersey.”

The Spain captain’s move comes after a lackluster stint at Milan, where he struggled to make an impact following his transfer from Atletico Madrid in the summer, intended to fill the shoes of fan favorite Olivier Giroud.

The 32-year-old managed to score only six goals in 24 matches across all competitions for Milan, who currently sit eighth in Serie A ahead of their local derby against champions Inter Milan.

Milan is expected to announce the signing of Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord for a reported fee of 32 million euros, with the Mexican striker arriving in northern Italy on Saturday night to finalize the deal.

“We have made significant investments during this transfer window, with (Davide) Calabria departing and (Kyle) Walker joining our defense, and now Alvaro leaving as we welcome Gimenez to our attack,” remarked Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who serves as an advisor to Milan’s owners, US Investment Fund RedBird.

Galatasaray currently leads the Turkish Super Lig, holding a six-point advantage over their Istanbul rivals, Fenerbahce.

Shell V-Power Quality Concerns: Vivo Energy Sets the Record Straight

Vivo Energy has addressed a viral video by content creator Tanuki Garage, who alleged that he tested fuel quality at various petrol stations in Nairobi, raising questions about Shell V-Power.

In a statement released on Sunday, Vivo Energy reiterated that all fuel imports in Kenya meet stringent quality standards, categorized into two Research Octane Number (RON) types: Unleaded (RON 93) and Shell V-Power (RON 95).

“Our fuel imports into Kenya comply with strict quality standards, classified into two Research Octane Number (RON) categories: Unleaded (RON 93) and Shell V-Power (RON 95). Each shipment is certified at the source and undergoes thorough testing upon arrival in the country,” the statement noted.

Vivo Energy highlighted its dedication to providing high-quality fuel, ensuring that rigorous quality control measures are implemented in light of the recent reports.

“At Vivo Energy Kenya, we have robust quality control protocols at our depots to guarantee that all fuels meet the necessary standards before they are distributed through our extensive Shell service station network,” the company stated.

Additionally, Vivo Energy Kenya confirmed that it is taking the allegations seriously and has initiated a thorough investigation, which includes independent laboratory testing.

“We take these allegations seriously and have launched a comprehensive investigation, including independent laboratory testing. We will share further updates once our review is complete,” the statement concluded.

On Sunday morning, content creator William Kimm, known as GTR Tanuki, shared a video showcasing fuel tests conducted at seven different stations.

According to Tanuki, his results indicated that some premium fuels performed worse than their standard counterparts.

He asserted that the findings from Shell stations challenged the common perception that premium fuel consistently outperforms regular options.

In one instance, the V-Power premium fuel scored 87 PON, while the standard fuel at the same station achieved a higher score of 91.

Vivo Energy Kenya, founded in November 2012, caters to a diverse clientele, ranging from retail to commercial sectors, by offering a comprehensive selection of automotive fuels, lubricants, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and black fuels.

The company operates oil storage terminals located in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nanyuki, provides aviation services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport, Mombasa International Airport, and Malindi Airport, and has a lubricating oil blending facility situated in Mombasa.

Taiwanese Icon Barbie Hsu of Meteor Garden Fame Dies at 48

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, renowned for her role in the hit TV series Meteor Garden, has sadly passed away due to pneumonia, according to local media reports. She was 48 years old.

Hsu was a prominent figure in the Mandarin-speaking entertainment industry, and her performance in Meteor Garden catapulted her to stardom across countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, where the show was dubbed into local languages.

The news of her passing sparked a wave of sorrow on social media, with fans expressing their disbelief and honoring Hsu for her significant impact on pop culture.

Her sister, Dee Hsu, confirmed the tragic news to Taiwan’s TVBS News on Monday, following swirling rumors the day prior. Barbie reportedly fell ill while vacationing in Japan.

“During the Lunar New Year, our family traveled to Japan for a holiday. My beloved sister Barbie has sadly departed after contracting pneumonia, which was triggered by influenza,” Dee shared in a statement released by her manager.

Hsu began her entertainment career at the age of 17 as part of a pop duo with her sister Dee. They later transitioned into television hosting, gaining popularity for their lively personalities and humor.

However, it was Meteor Garden, based on a 1990s Japanese manga, that truly launched Hsu’s career beyond Mandarin-speaking audiences.

In the series, she portrayed Shancai, a girl from a modest background who enrolls in an elite private school and becomes embroiled in a romantic entanglement with the heirs of affluent families.

Her four male co-stars from Meteor Garden would eventually form the Taiwanese boyband F4, which became one of the most beloved Mandopop groups of the 2000s.

On Monday, F4 member Ken Chu shared a somber black image on Instagram, along with a group photo featuring Hsu.

“What a shock,” he expressed on Weibo.

Meteor Garden captured the hearts of Asian viewers long before the era of video streaming. In the Philippines, a local network reportedly aired the entire series eight times to meet the overwhelming demand from fans, and bootleg copies of the show were commonly sold at roadside stalls.
