Transforming passion into profit: The journey of Kenyan youth turning their hobbies into income.

In the vibrant cities and serene rural areas of Kenya, a fresh wave of young entrepreneurs is turning their passions into successful businesses. The ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) movement is flourishing, empowering the youth to convert their talents into profitable ventures.

From unique fashion creations and delicious baked goods to innovative tech solutions and handcrafted furniture, Kenya’s DIY scene is showcasing how creativity and determination can lead to financial freedom.

While youth unemployment remains a significant issue in Kenya, many young individuals are discovering inventive ways to generate income by capitalizing on their interests.

Social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are offering accessible and cost-effective ways for these entrepreneurs to display their skills and connect with a broader audience.

By sidestepping traditional job routes, these young innovators are proving that self-taught abilities and digital expertise can result in sustainable earnings.

Confronted with a scarcity of formal job opportunities, numerous young Kenyans are transforming their hobbies into successful enterprises.

Unlike earlier generations that focused on conventional career paths, today’s youth are redefining what success looks like by turning their creative endeavors into lucrative businesses.

With low startup costs and a global digital marketplace at their disposal, they are demonstrating that passion and creativity can serve as powerful economic catalysts.

Social media has been instrumental in this transformation, allowing entrepreneurs to promote their products and services without the need for costly physical stores.

Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook provide free marketing opportunities, enabling artisans, bakers, fashion creators, and tech enthusiasts to expand their brands beyond local boundaries.

Tech-savvy young individuals are harnessing their programming and design talents to develop websites, mobile applications, and digital marketing strategies tailored for small businesses.

A significant number of these emerging professionals are self-educated, utilizing free online resources and collaborating with peers. Platforms such as Ajira Digital and YouTube tutorials have simplified the process for youth to gain digital skills that can lead to profitable ventures.

E-commerce sites like Jumia, Kilimall, and local WhatsApp groups have created alternative avenues for DIY entrepreneurs to market their products. Furthermore, trade fairs, pop-up markets, and partnerships with established brands provide valuable exposure and networking possibilities.

As Kenya’s DIY culture thrives, its influence goes beyond personal financial gain. It is nurturing a new wave of self-sufficient, innovative, and empowered youth who are making significant contributions to the nation’s economy. This movement also champions sustainability by promoting local craftsmanship and reviving traditional skills that had been eclipsed by industrialization.

With a growing appreciation for unique, handmade, and locally sourced products, the outlook for Kenya’s DIY entrepreneurs is promising. As more young people turn to skill-based enterprises, the DIY revolution is poised to transform entrepreneurship in Kenya for the foreseeable future.

Patient Killed At Kenyatta National Hospital Ward

Detectives are currently probing a tragic incident at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where a patient was found murdered in his ward.

According to police and hospital officials, the male patient was discovered dead in his bed with a slashed throat. Witnesses, including other patients, reported that an intruder entered the ward and attacked the patient early Friday morning.

Upon investigation, police confirmed the presence of an intruder and noted that the CCTV cameras were non-operational at the time of the incident. The hospital expressed deep sorrow over the patient’s death.

Dr. William Sigilai, the acting CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital, stated that an investigation is underway.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased during this challenging time. We are collaborating closely with law enforcement and have initiated an internal inquiry to uncover the details surrounding this incident,” he remarked.

Dr. Sigilai emphasized the hospital’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for everyone, stating, “The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors are our top priority.”

This incident echoes a similar tragedy that occurred nine years ago at the same hospital, where a patient was brutally murdered in November 2015. That victim had been admitted on November 8 and was found dead overnight, suffering from stab wounds and having one eye gouged out. At the time, he was in the company of a deaf and incapacitated cancer patient, with three nurses on duty. The sole witness to that horrific event was a 12-year-old patient who was unable to hear, speak, or write.

Life and times of Leonard Mambo Mbotela

Leonard Mambo Mbotela, the esteemed Kenyan journalist who passed away on Friday, had a remarkable career in the media that spanned an impressive fifty years.

Born in Freetown, Mombasa, Mbotela was the firstborn in a family of eight, the son of the late James and Aida Mbotela. His father, a dedicated educator, taught at various institutions, including Shimo La Tewa High School and Kabianga High School, eventually retiring as an educational officer. His mother was actively involved with “Maendeleo ya Wanawake.”

From an early age, Mbotela was captivated by the world of broadcasting, relishing the opportunity to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

After finishing primary school, he attended Kitui High School and completed his secondary education in 1962. He then began his career as a trainee reporter at The Standard in Nakuru.

In 1964, he joined the Voice of Kenya, now known as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, where he remained until his retirement in 2022.

At the state broadcaster, he developed his iconic program “Je Huu ni Ungwana?” which is still aired today. In 1967, he furthered his skills with a year of journalism training at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London.

During the attempted coup in 1982 aimed at toppling President Daniel Moi, Mbotela was in the studio fulfilling his regular duties. He was reportedly coerced into announcing on live television that the nation was under military rule and that the president had been ousted.

The situation was eventually stabilized by the GSU and regular police forces, after which he was instructed to declare that the rebels had been defeated and that the president was back in control.

By the time he left the airwaves in 2022, Mbotela had dedicated an astounding 58 years to broadcasting. He is survived by his wife, Alice Mwikali, and their three children: Jimmy, George, and Aida Mbotela.

Leonard Mambo Mbotela passes away at 85

Veteran media figure Leonard Mambo Mbotela has passed away.

His daughter-in-law, Anne Mbotela, confirmed the news.

The esteemed journalist had been facing health challenges for some time and took his last breath around 9:30 am on Friday.

“It is true my father-in-law has passed on,” Anne shared with the Star.

Mbotela was married to Alice Mwikali, and together they raised three children: Aida, Jimmy, and George Mbotela.

He was well-known for his iconic radio and television show, Jee Huuu ni Ungwana, which aired on KBC radio and TV.

Launched in 1966, the program captivated audiences for nearly 55 years.

Before his time at KBC, he had brief stints with Kenya Weekly News and the East African Standard.

Born in 1940 in Freetown, Mombasa, Mbotela was the eldest of eight children to James and Aida Mbotela.

With over fifty years in journalism, a significant moment in his career was the 1982 coup attempt against then-President Daniel Moi.

During this tumultuous event, officers from the Kenya Air Force stormed Mbotela’s home in Ngara, capturing him and forcing him to announce the coup at the Voice of Kenya (VOK) studios.

Private Hezekiah Ochuka was present during this announcement.

However, the coup was ultimately unsuccessful, as the GSU and regular police, led by Major General Mahamoud Mohamed, intervened, prompting Mbotela to later announce that President Moi remained in power.

Migori: Mpesa agent attacked and robbed of Sh100k

A Mpesa agent was attacked and robbed of Sh100,000 in Rongo Town, Migori County.

The victim reported to the police that she was on her way home when a gang on a motorcycle chased her down and struck her at Kasere Trading Centre.

Authorities arrived at the scene and learned that Faith, who runs an Mpesa business, had just closed her shop and was riding a motorcycle home.

Upon reaching Kasere Market, she and the motorcycle rider were ambushed by two men, one of whom was armed with a gun.

The rider suffered chest injuries, while the woman experienced head pain.

The assailants made off with the woman’s bag, which held an Mpesa phone, three bank transaction devices, and Sh100,000, escaping in a car heading towards Homabay.

Both victims were taken to Venesa Medical Centre and later transferred to Kisii Level Six Hospital for further treatment.

Police are actively working to track down the suspects.

Previous incidents suggest that attackers often receive tips about cash movements, with some bank employees allegedly disclosing transaction details to gangs that loiter in banking areas, allowing them to follow and strike.

In certain cases, victims have been kidnapped, bound, and left in remote areas after being robbed.

Authorities report that they are seeing about one such case each week nationwide, prompting calls for individuals carrying large sums of money to seek police assistance for protection.

Officials involved in the investigation are paying close attention to this troubling trend.

Maralal: 23 Year old Man shot dead in robbery incident

The victim, identified as Leonard Lendunda, had stepped outside after hearing a disturbance when he was shot in the left side of his chest, dying instantly.

Following the gunfire, the attackers managed to drive off with five cows from the property before an alarm was raised.

Members of the National Police Reserve, alerted by the shots, quickly responded and pursued the fleeing gang.

According to police reports, the suspects headed towards the Opiroi area, where the NPR team set up an ambush, leading to a shootout.

The bandits abandoned the stolen cattle in their haste to escape, and the animals were returned to their rightful owner.

Authorities later arrived at the scene, retrieved the deceased man’s body, and transported it to the local mortuary for an autopsy and further investigation.

Nairobi: Woman robbed Sh3.6 million in Industrial Area

Detectives are looking into a case involving a woman who reported losing Sh3.6 million outside a petrol station on Lunga Lunga Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.

According to her account, the assailants threatened her life if she attempted to call for help.

The woman explained to the police that she had just withdrawn the money from a bank to support her business when the gang, which appeared to have been following her, struck on the morning of Wednesday, February 5.

She was on the road with the cash in a bag and had stopped a short distance from the petrol station to take some medicine. Suddenly, she heard a loud crash as the car window shattered.

Two masked men on a motorcycle, armed and demanding her money, ordered her to hand over the cash. Fearing for her safety, she complied and gave them the money before they fled the scene.

After reporting the incident, police arrived to investigate and have since gathered security camera footage that recorded the event.

Authorities are actively pursuing the suspects, with Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirming that a dedicated team of detectives is on the case.

Al Shabaab demands hefty ransom for release of kidnapped officials

Al Shabaab militants have demanded a ransom of Sh7 million for the release of five local chiefs abducted from Mandera County.

The incident, which took place on February 3, just a day before President Ruto’s visit to Mandera, has left the community in shock and has sparked urgent efforts by local elders to gather the ransom while appealing for government assistance.

The kidnapped chiefs—Mohammed Adawa, Mohammed Hassan, Mohammed Noor, assistant chief Ibrahim Gabow, and senior chief Abdi Suraw—were en route to Elwak for official duties when their vehicle was ambushed by the suspected militants near Iresuki village.

Witnesses reported that the militants blindfolded the chiefs and commandeered their vehicle, heading towards Lafey, an area known for such violent incidents.

Security officials indicated that the militants appeared to have prior knowledge of the chiefs’ travel plans, hinting at possible local collaboration.

The abduction occurred just before President William Ruto was set to visit the region for a development tour, raising serious concerns about the ongoing security issues in the area.

In the aftermath of the kidnapping, the local community has struggled to raise the ransom, with elders from both Mandera and Nairobi convening separate meetings to kickstart fundraising efforts, though it remains uncertain how much has been gathered.

The urgency of the situation has amplified calls for government intervention, as many worry that negotiating with terrorists could create a troubling precedent.

An official involved in the negotiations revealed that around 60 Kenyans are currently held captive by al Shabaab, heightening fears that engaging in dialogue could empower the militants.

“This situation raises significant concerns about the fate of other individuals, including security personnel, who are also being held by the terrorists in Somalia,” the official remarked.

Kisumu: Former Assistant Chief Found Guilty of Murder, Sentenced to 30 years

A former Assistant Chief from Kisumu County has received a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of murder.

Joel Juma Oliewo, who previously served as the Assistant Chief of Upper Kadongo sub-location in Kisumu-West Sub County, was found guilty of killing Eric Ochieng Atito on October 7, 2021, in Kadawa village.

On August 19, 2024, Justice Roselyne Aburili of the Kisumu High Court determined that the prosecution had established Oliewo’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to his defense being called.

After reviewing the evidence presented, Justice Aburili concluded that it was compelling enough to require Oliewo to defend himself against the charges.

The trial, which commenced on November 14, 2023, featured testimony from 11 protection witnesses.

Justice Aburili emphasized that Oliewo’s sentence serves as a warning to others in similar roles, reinforcing the importance of upholding the law rather than taking matters into their own hands.
