A man has been apprehended by police in Eldoret for allegedly murdering a Form 2 student, who is believed to have been his girlfriend.

The tragic event took place at Gem Farm in the Moiben sub-county of Uasin Gishu.

The suspect, who works as a boda boda rider, turned himself in to the authorities on Friday and reportedly confessed to the crime.

According to Uasin Gishu county police commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the suspect had picked up the girl from a local mixed secondary school before taking her to a lodging at Gem Farm, where they spent some time together.

“After the incident, he contacted the local chief to inform him that he had killed his girlfriend,” Mwanthi stated.

Following his call to the chief, the suspect, who operates his boda boda business in the vicinity, walked to a nearby police station to report the crime.

The chief and police quickly responded to the scene, where they discovered the girl’s body wrapped in a blanket.

“He was subsequently arrested and detained as we initiated an investigation into the matter,” Mwanthi added.

While the motive behind the murder remains unclear, the suspect is believed to have strangled the girl following a dispute over unspecified issues.

Mwanthi urged parents to remain vigilant about their children’s whereabouts, particularly those attending day schools.

“As parents, we must prioritize the safety of our children, both in and out of school,” he emphasized.

The suspect will undergo interrogation and statement recording before being processed for court.

“He is cooperating with the investigation, after which he will be presented in court regarding this incident,” Mwanthi confirmed.

The community has expressed outrage over the killing of the schoolgirl, condemning the act.

Governor Natembeya convoy pelted with stones while departing Chebukati’s requiem mass

A requiem mass held in Kimilili, Trans Nzoia County, to pay tribute to the late former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati descended into chaos on Friday when local Governor George Natembeya was reportedly ambushed by hired goons shortly after his arrival.

Natembeya stated that upon his entrance, Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, who had seemingly left the event earlier, returned with a rowdy crowd that aggressively confronted his team, necessitating police intervention.

The officers allegedly instructed Bisau to vacate the area. However, Natembeya claims the MP directed the unruly group to position themselves along the roadside to ambush his convoy as it departed.

In the midst of the turmoil, Natembeya’s driver, Kaitano Siphas, sustained a neck injury while trying to protect the Governor from a barrage of stones. Additionally, two police officers were injured and are currently receiving medical care.

Natembeya has condemned the attack, labeling it a “disgraceful and barbaric” effort to instill fear and disrupt peace.

The Governor of Trans Nzoia has urged law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

He reassured residents that his administration will not be intimidated by such acts and will persist in its efforts to create a safer and more prosperous county for everyone.

DCI launches manhunt for three key suspects in Campbell Scott murder

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is seeking assistance from the public to help apprehend three primary suspects involved in the murder of British national Campbell Scott.

The homicide team at DCI has identified the suspects as Benard Mbunga Mbusu, Samuel Musembi Kamitu, and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as Edu. They are connected to the violent death of the 58-year-old, whose decaying body was found in Makongo Forest, Makueni.

Authorities believe the suspects lured Scott, who was in Nairobi, under the pretense of a business meeting before he vanished on February 17, leading to his murder.

In addition, police have detained two other individuals who are assisting with the investigation.

Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki appeared before Magistrate Lukas Onyina on Monday.

The court was informed that initial investigations suggest Scott was taken to Mutua’s residence in Pipeline, Nairobi, where he is thought to have been killed.

The prosecution revealed that the two suspects allegedly tried to use Scott’s credit cards in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa.

They were apprehended on March 1 along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road, and it was discovered that the first suspect had already vacated his Pipeline home.

Family suspects cover-up after top cop killed in presidential convoy incident at JKIA

The family of Chief Inspector Nicholas Aguk Oballa, who tragically lost his life while on duty on February 7, has expressed their frustration over the lack of investigation into his death.

Chief Inspector Oballa, who served as the base commander at Embakasi Police Station, reportedly died while assisting with the presidential convoy at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to his family, he was struck by a reckless driver while directing the presidential party into the airport’s VIP area. They claim that the entire motorcade passed by the injured officer without stopping to help.

For the past four weeks, the family has been left in the dark, as no information about the vehicle or its occupants has been released. This apparent lack of action from the authorities has led them to suspect a possible cover-up.

The Director of Public Prosecutions and the Inspector General have acknowledged the complaint, and a requiem mass is scheduled to take place at the Nairobi Central SDA Church.

Now, the family is torn between demanding a swift investigation and grappling with their grief, all while unanswered questions continue to haunt them.

President Ruto and Raila officially enters into an agreement to work together

President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have officially forged a political alliance aimed at collaborating within a unified government.

The agreement between Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was formally signed on Friday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

Both leaders affixed their signatures to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), accompanied by officials from their respective parties.

Following the signing, ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga praised the new collaboration, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing national interests over personal agendas.

“The unity, stability, and prosperity of our nation is a collective responsibility, not just that of a select few. Despite our diverse political beliefs and backgrounds, unity is something we can all support. Equity is essential,” she remarked.

“This partnership established today transcends just the two of you; Baba has experienced it all and has enough wisdom for generations. The President has held various positions. Therefore, I believe this unity is for the youth, women, the marginalized… it is for all Kenyans who have felt excluded from the nation.”

Her UDA counterpart and Embu County leader Cecily Mbarire echoed these sentiments, commending the transparency of the process and the MoU’s provisions.

Mbarire further applauded President Ruto and Raila for setting aside their differences and rigid positions for the greater good of the country.

Repeat Incident: SpaceX Starship Explodes Yet Again

A dramatic scene unfolds as fragments race across the sky, following the catastrophic tumble and explosion of SpaceX's Starship spacecraft in the vastness of space.

SpaceX’s colossal Starship spacecraft met a fiery end in space on Thursday, just minutes after its launch from Texas, leading the FAA to temporarily suspend air traffic in parts of Florida. This marks the second consecutive failure for Elon Musk’s ambitious Mars rocket initiative this year.

Social media was flooded with videos capturing the dramatic scene of burning debris lighting up the evening sky over southern Florida and the Bahamas, as the Starship disintegrated shortly after it began to spin wildly with its engines turned off, according to a live stream of the mission.

This eighth test of the Starship comes just over a month after the seventh also ended in a catastrophic failure. These consecutive setbacks occurred during early mission stages that SpaceX had previously navigated successfully, posing a challenge for a program Musk aimed to accelerate this year.

The towering 123-meter rocket system is pivotal to Musk’s vision of sending humans to Mars by the end of the decade.

In response to the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary ground stops at Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Orlando airports due to “space launch debris.” They have also initiated a mishap investigation into the event.

The rocket took off around 6:30 p.m. ET (2330 GMT) from SpaceX’s extensive Boca Chica, Texas, launch site. The Super Heavy first stage booster returned to Earth as intended and was successfully captured midair by a SpaceX crane.

However, just minutes later, the live stream revealed the Starship upper stage spinning uncontrollably in space, with a visualization indicating multiple engine shutdowns. Shortly after, the company announced it had lost contact with the spacecraft, prompting announcers to reference the earlier flight’s issues.

SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot remarked during the live stream, “This isn’t the first time we’ve faced this issue, so we have some experience to draw from.”

In a statement released late Thursday, SpaceX reported that Starship encountered an “energetic event” in its rear section, leading to the failure of several engines.

“This resulted in a loss of attitude control and ultimately caused us to lose communication with Starship,” the statement explained. “We last made contact with Starship about 9 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.”

SpaceX confirmed that there were no hazardous materials in the debris.

The previous Starship failure in January occurred eight minutes into the flight when the rocket exploded, scattering debris over Caribbean islands and causing minor damage to a vehicle in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The FAA, which oversees private rocket launches, stated that its investigation would require SpaceX to analyze the cause of the failure and obtain the agency’s approval before Starship can launch again.

Last month, the FAA granted SpaceX a launch license for Thursday’s test flight, even as its investigation into the earlier Starship failure remained ongoing.

In its review, the FAA assessed SpaceX’s license application and initial findings from the company’s mishap investigation, allowing Starship’s eighth flight to proceed.

Starship aimed to complete nearly a full orbit around Earth and re-enter over the Indian Ocean for a splashdown, simulating a landing sequence that SpaceX plans to execute on land as a crucial next step in the rocket’s development.

How university students are turning skills into side hustle

In a world where costs are continually climbing while earnings remain stagnant, financial savvy becomes crucial. As parents work hard to support their families, university students are discovering innovative ways to supplement their income.

I had the opportunity to chat with two students who explained their motivations for starting businesses while in school and how they navigate their finances during these challenging times.

Don Ochieng, a final-year accounting student at the University of Nairobi and a student leader, shared his journey of securing funding for his business, which now includes five of his friends as partners.

“I’m focused on business. As a student leader, I used my salary to launch my venture during my second year,” he explained.

“I operate a tuck shop on campus, and I also run a printing service. I’ve enlisted five fellow students to help manage the operations. My goal is to generate profit that I can reinvest into other ventures and save for unexpected expenses.”

Vanessa Muthoni, studying counseling and psychology, has turned her passion for baking into a business called ‘Crust and Crumble.’ What began as a pastime during breaks has evolved into a legitimate side hustle. To maintain her financial health, she emphasizes saving before spending, ensuring she has a financial cushion.

Her advice to fellow students is straightforward: “Just take the plunge. Explore your interests, practice your skills, and identify opportunities to turn your passion into a business.”

Don echoes this sentiment, encouraging his peers to “Develop a business idea and take action; even a small investment can lead to a successful venture.”

“The aim is to grow this business. My message is to focus on entrepreneurship, as we know that many of the wealthiest individuals in Kenya are business owners.”

For university students, it’s essential to delve into your interests and pinpoint a niche that allows you to transform your skills into a thriving business.
