Drama In Parliament Buildings As Two Female MPs Fight

On Tuesday, a dramatic scene unfolded at the Parliament Buildings as two female Members of Parliament clashed in front of cameras.

A video shared with the Star captured the confrontation between Umulkheir Harun, a nominated MP from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and Falhada Iman, an MP for the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA). The footage shows the two MPs exchanging heated words while other female colleagues attempted, unsuccessfully, to intervene.

One of the MPs trying to break up the fight was heard calling for assistance from other legislators who were observing from a distance. Another MP urged those watching to stop recording the altercation.

The situation was eventually diffused when the Sergeant-at-Arms intervened and successfully separated the two MPs. However, even after being pulled apart, they continued to exchange insults.

Following the incident, Umulkheir expressed her regret, describing the event as unfortunate. She stated that she has reported the matter to the appropriate authorities.

“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother. I have made a complaint regarding the assault to the necessary institutions,” her statement partially reads.

Umulkheir emphasized her disapproval of any misconduct, stating, “I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to stress that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct. While I am not providing further comments at this time, I remain fully committed to upholding the respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and myself, particularly as a Muslim woman.

The political environment can be challenging, but there is never an excuse for behavior that compromises the integrity of our work. I hope we can work together to create a more respectful and constructive atmosphere moving forward,” she concluded.

Social Media for Teens: Metas New Approach with Teen Accounts

Meta is launching its “Teen Accounts” feature on Facebook and Messenger this Tuesday, responding to ongoing criticism regarding its efforts to safeguard young users from online dangers.

The new privacy enhancements and parental controls, which were first rolled out on Instagram last year, aim to alleviate concerns about teenagers’ social media usage, according to the company.

This move to bolster safety features for teens coincides with lawmakers who are determined to advance proposed legislation, such as the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), aimed at protecting children from the risks associated with social media.

Meta, along with TikTok from ByteDance and YouTube from Google, is currently facing numerous lawsuits filed by children and school districts regarding the addictive qualities of social media platforms.

In 2023, 33 states in the U.S., including California and New York, took legal action against the company for allegedly misleading the public about the risks associated with its platforms.

Meta announced that users under 16 will need parental consent to go live and will have the option to disable a feature that automatically blurs images that may contain nudity in direct messages.

“We will begin implementing these updates in the coming months,” the company stated.

In July 2024, the U.S. Senate moved forward with two online safety bills — KOSA and The Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act — which would hold social media companies accountable for the impact their platforms have on children and teens.

Although the Republican-led House did not vote on KOSA last year, they indicated during a recent committee hearing that they intend to pursue new legislation aimed at enhancing online protections for children.

Major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok permit users aged 13 and older to create accounts.

Nakuru: Irate Locals Torch Houses Of A Notorious Chang’aa Brewer

Angry residents have set fire to five homes owned by a notorious chang’aa brewer in Molo, Nakuru County.

This incident comes in the wake of the death of a 43-year-old man, who was reportedly involved in a confrontation at her den.

In an interview with a local radio station, community leaders, including Pastor Joel Too and former councillor Paul Tessot, voiced their anger over the persistent violence associated with the brewer’s business.

The father of the deceased criticized local chiefs for neglecting the community’s concerns.

Residents have claimed that despite their repeated complaints, law enforcement has not taken any action against the brewer.

“We are astonished that she is still in business; lives have been lost, and now we feel compelled to take matters into our own hands,” he stated.

The area chief and his deputy declined to comment following the destruction of the properties, which included the brewer’s residence.

Last year, two brothers were reportedly killed during a confrontation involving a gang that serves as her security.

Molo OCPD Tim Odingo has stated that he will look into the situation.

The Rise of Kenyan Retirement Savings: A Closer Look at the Numbers

Kenyans’ investments in pension schemes have nearly doubled since 2022, according to data from the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA).

The RBA’s records indicate that pension contributions surged from Ksh.62.73 billion for the first half of 2022 to Ksh.118.80 billion by the end of December 2024.

In the six months leading up to December 2022, contributions amounted to Ksh.70.26 billion, which increased to Ksh.83.14 billion in the first half of 2023, and then rose further to Ksh.105.65 billion in the latter half of 2023.

In the first half of last year, Kenyans contributed Ksh.116.10 billion, which slightly increased to Ksh.118.80 billion in the second half.

Simultaneously, contributions to Post-Retirement Medical Funds (PRMFs), designed for healthcare savings after retirement, have seen a significant rise since September 2024.

For the six months ending December 2023, RBA data reveals that Kenyans contributed Ksh.51.51 million to their PRMFs, which increased to Ksh.76.02 million in the first half of last year.

In the latter half of 2024, this amount skyrocketed to Ksh.268.36 million, largely due to a Treasury directive that permitted pension schemes and employers to establish medical funds for their members or employees in accordance with PRMF regulations.

Recent changes to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Act of 2013 have introduced higher contribution rates for the state-run pension scheme and expanded the contribution base to include informal sector workers.

Last year, the NSSF implemented a tiered contribution system, replacing the previous flat-rate model.

Tier I contributions apply to pensionable earnings up to the lower earnings limit of Ksh.7,000 per month, while Tier II contributions are for earnings exceeding that threshold.

While Tier I contributions are directly paid to the NSSF, employers have the option to allocate Tier II contributions to a contracted-out scheme or a newly established one.

Workers contribute six percent of their gross monthly salary to the fund, with their employers matching this amount.

In 2024, the maximum deduction was Ksh.2,160 from the employee, along with an equal contribution from the employer, bringing the total to Ksh.4,320.

Starting in February 2025, the maximum deduction for employees increased to Ksh.4,320, with employers also contributing the same amount, resulting in a total of Ksh.8,640.

U.S. : Kenyan Gov’t Officials Demand for Bribes From American Investors

The United States has once again highlighted the widespread issue of bribery and extortion faced by American investors from Kenyan government officials in order to secure contracts.

Last year, Washington identified this problem as one of the primary trade obstacles with Nairobi, indicating that U.S. companies have struggled significantly in their attempts to win Kenyan government tenders, with corruption being a major factor.

In the latest 2025 National Trade Estimate (NTE) from the United States Trade Representative’s office, it is stated that corruption continues to be a major influence on the outcomes of public tenders in Kenya.

According to Jamieson Greer’s office, “Tenders are frequently not announced in a timely or transparent manner. Foreign companies, some lacking established credentials, have secured government contracts by collaborating with well-connected Kenyan firms or individuals.”

Despite Kenya’s efforts to digitize procurement processes to enhance transparency, the U.S. claims that systems like the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) are still ineffective.

Concerns regarding IFMIS include inadequate connectivity and technical capabilities in county government offices, central control outages, and security vulnerabilities that expose the system to potential manipulation and hacking, as noted by President Donald Trump’s trade advisor.

Similar to the previous year, the report also mentions that U.S. businesses have expressed frustrations over the lengthy customs clearance process in Kenya.

It describes this as a “complex and inefficient procedure” that involves “numerous steps with disjointed offices,” inconsistent application of classification and valuation decisions, and “unnecessary transit inspections.”

Additionally, the U.S. has pointed out the prevalent issue of counterfeit and pirated goods in the Kenyan market, referencing an international copyright treaty established by WIPO, a U.N. agency focused on intellectual property, in 1996.

Washington pointed out that Nairobi’s customs record-keeping system and the requirements for Import Permits are not being enforced, which adds extra costs and burdens for Americans importing products that involve intellectual property into Kenya.

This statement from the U.S. Trade Representative follows Kenya’s recent launch of the comprehensive Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) System, aimed at combating corruption in both national and county government contracts.

The e-GP system, which is integrated with the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), is part of reforms supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to enhance the efficiency of government procurement processes. The National Treasury expects this initiative to lead to lower costs for goods, services, and works, improved transparency, shorter procurement cycles, greater accountability, and better management of procurement information.

Kenya aims to eliminate the exploitation of suppliers and contractors by unscrupulous individuals involved in payment processing and approval of disbursements within government offices.

Relief for Harambee Stars GoalKeeper Patrick Matasi As High Court lifts ban

The High Court in Kakamega has overturned the suspension placed on Harambee Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Patrick Matasi by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) due to allegations of match-fixing.

In a decision announced on Tuesday, the court issued a conservatory order that permits Matasi to participate in all FKF-sanctioned events and competitions until the case is fully adjudicated.

Matasi had received a 90-day suspension on March 27 after videos surfaced on social media, raising suspicions of match-fixing involving an unidentified individual believed to be a ‘recruiter.’

The court’s conservatory order prevents FKF from enforcing the suspension while the petition filed by Matasi is under consideration.

“The respondent has not replied to the Application nor appeared in court. I consider the application to be unopposed. I hereby issue a conservatory order that restrains the Respondent, whether directly or through any person acting on their behalf, from acting on the communication dated March 27, 2025, which suspended Matasi from all FKF-sanctioned events and competitions until the petition is heard and resolved.

“The Petitioner is required to file and serve the main petition to the Respondent, who must respond within 30 days from today (Tuesday, March 8th). A mention will take place on June 4, 2025, for further instructions,” stated part of the ruling by Judge S.N Mbungi.

Additionally, the court has given FKF 30 days to respond to the petition, with the hearing scheduled for June 4 of this year.

Gemini 2.5: Google unveils its most advanced AI model to date.

Google has started the rollout of Gemini 2.5, which the tech company claims to be the “most advanced AI model” developed by its DeepMind research lab for the Gemini AI chatbot.

Gemini was launched in December 2023 as Google’s competitor to ChatGPT, which was released by Microsoft-backed OpenAI in November 2022. It has been operating on the Gemini 2.0 model that debuted in December 2024.

The initial release of 2.5 is an experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro, which Google states features enhanced cognitive abilities.

“Gemini 2.5 models are designed for reasoning, allowing them to process their thoughts before providing responses, leading to better performance and greater accuracy,” said Koray Kavukcuoglu, CTO of Google DeepMind, in a blog post.

Gemini 2.5 Pro is accessible through Google AI Studio and the Gemini app for advanced users. Google has indicated that this model will soon be available on its machine learning platform, Vertex AI.

“We will also announce pricing in the upcoming weeks, allowing users to access 2.5 Pro with increased rate limits for larger-scale production applications,” Kavukcuoglu added.

According to Google, the new model demonstrates impressive reasoning skills and excels in coding, mathematics, and scientific benchmarks.

“It can analyze extensive datasets and tackle intricate problems from various information sources, including text, audio, images, video, and even complete code repositories,” Kavukcuoglu explained.

Previously, Gemini 2.5 Pro was exclusively available to Gemini Advanced subscribers as part of the Ksh.3,700-a-month Google One AI Premium plan.

Google has been incorporating its AI advancements into its range of products, including Search, Android, and Workspace.

For example, the Gemini 2.0 Flash model has been driving the AI Overviews feature in Search.

This initiative is part of the tech giant’s strategy to compete with companies like OpenAI, which offers a Ksh.26,000-a-month ChatGPT subscription for advanced research purposes.

In December, the company introduced its text-to-video model, Sora, for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. This feature enables users to create videos with a resolution of up to 1080p, lasting 20 seconds, and available in different aspect ratios.

Among the competitors challenging Google in the AI landscape is Elon Musk’s xAI, which has integrated its chatbot Grok into the X social media platform.

In January, China’s DeepSeek made waves in the industry by unveiling a model that it claims was trained using less sophisticated, more affordable chips compared to those of its Western competitors.

Chinese tech giant Baidu, unveils two new AI models as the competition in the industry intensifies.

On Sunday, Baidu (9888.HK) announced the introduction of two new artificial intelligence models, one of which is designed for advanced reasoning and is said to compete with DeepSeek’s offerings. This move comes as Baidu seeks to distinguish itself in the highly competitive AI landscape.

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has recently launched its own models, claiming they match or even surpass the leading AI technologies from the United States, all at a significantly lower cost. This development has shaken the industry and revitalized the global AI competition.

Baidu highlighted that its ERNIE X1 model performs similarly to DeepSeek’s R1 but is available at just half the price. The X1 boasts enhanced capabilities in understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution, and is noted as the first deep thinking model capable of using tools independently.

Additionally, Baidu introduced its latest foundation model, ERNIE 4.5, which features exceptional multimodal understanding. This model has improved language skills and enhanced abilities in understanding, generating, logic, and memory.

Baidu also emphasized that ERNIE 4.5 possesses a high emotional quotient (EQ), making it adept at interpreting internet memes and satirical cartoons.

As one of the first major tech companies in China to launch a ChatGPT-style chatbot, Baidu has faced challenges in achieving widespread use of its Ernie large language model, despite asserting that its performance is on par with OpenAI’s GPT-4, amid intense competition.

Multimodal AI systems are designed to handle and integrate various data types, including text, video, images, and audio, allowing for seamless content conversion across these formats.

Bomet: Teenage boy hospitalized in ICU after eating raw snake

A 15-year-old boy is battling for his life at Litein Mission Hospital after ingesting a raw snake in Chemogoch Village, Bomet County.

This unusual event has created quite a stir in the community, leading his family to quickly transport him to the hospital, where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On Saturday evening, the hospital encountered an unexpected case that left the medical team in disbelief. The teenager, who sells traditional beer, was admitted after consuming a raw green snake.

Witnesses reported that some of his customers had caught and killed the snake, which he then took home. His mother was taken aback when she found him with the dead snake tucked in his pocket.

“He said, ‘Mom, wait, let me show you,’ and I screamed. He dashed to the stream, devoured the entire snake, and drank some water,” recalled Emmy Ruto, the boy’s mother.

As the effects of the snake’s venom began to manifest, villagers stepped in and rushed him to a nearby dispensary.

However, as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Litein Mission Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU.

“When I tried to intervene, others told me he had been bitten by the snake. We restrained him and hurried him to the hospital,” shared John Ruto, the boy’s uncle.

After receiving intensive medical care, doctors managed to stabilize his condition.

He has since been moved from the ICU to a general ward, where he is now on the mend.

“This is an incredibly rare case. We’ve never encountered anything like it before, but he is now stable and recovering in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) after being discharged from the ICU,” stated Dr. Valentine Mbithi, a physician at Litein Mission Hospital.

The incident has left the village in disbelief, with residents wondering what could have driven the boy to eat the raw snake.

Woman arrested after assaulting husband over plans to marry second wife

In Migori County, authorities have taken a middle-aged woman into custody for allegedly scalding her husband with hot water and subsequently assaulting him with a machete in Kadar-Posi village, Uriri.

According to North Kanyamkago area chief Silvance Owiti, the incident occurred on Saturday night around 9 p.m., when Emilly Otieno attacked her husband, Evance Odhiambo, inflicting severe burns and cuts.

Owiti reported that the suspect first doused her husband with hot water before grabbing a machete and striking him multiple times on the head and other areas of his body.

Neighbors quickly transported the injured man to Migori Level Four Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care, while the suspect remains in police custody.

“We are still trying to determine the reasons behind the attack, but initial investigations suggest that the woman may have acted out of jealousy upon hearing rumors of her husband’s plans to take a second wife,” the chief stated.
