Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal signs new contract until 2031

Barcelona’s young talent Lamine Yamal has signed a new contract with the Catalan giants, extending his stay until 2031, following an impressive season.

The 17-year-old winger has quickly become one of the club’s essential players, contributing to their domestic treble, which includes La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

“Barcelona and Lamine Yamal have finalized an agreement to extend his contract until June 30, 2031,” stated the Catalan club in an official announcement.

“The renewal of Lamine Yamal signifies the strength of Barca’s project. His rise in the global football arena is unparalleled, having begun with his debut on April 29, 2023, at the tender age of 15.”

According to Spanish media, the new contract positions him among the highest-paid players at Barcelona.

After celebrating victory at Euro 2024 with Spain last summer, Yamal netted 18 goals and provided 25 assists in 55 matches throughout a remarkable season.

Playing primarily on the right wing and showcasing exceptional dribbling skills, Yamal’s agility and pace were instrumental in Barcelona scoring 102 league goals this season, as they reclaimed the title from their rivals, Real Madrid.

Having progressed through the renowned La Masia youth academy, Yamal is frequently compared to Barcelona legend Lionel Messi. He made his debut in 2023 under the management of Xavi Hernandez at just 15 years old.

By the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, he had established himself as the team’s primary attacking force, shining in a disappointing campaign where Barcelona finished without any trophies.

Following his remarkable performances at the Euros, Yamal seamlessly adapted to Flick’s attacking philosophy, demonstrating increased consistency and solidifying his status as one of the world’s elite players.

Yamal delivered two outstanding performances in the Champions League semi-finals against Inter Milan, although his team was narrowly defeated 7-6 on aggregate, leaving them to wait to end their European trophy drought.

“I will fulfill my promise and bring the Champions League trophy to Barcelona; we will not rest until we achieve it,” Yamal vowed after the match.

Despite his young age, the winger has already made over 100 appearances for Barcelona.

Yamal, who will celebrate his 18th birthday in July, has joined his teammate Raphinha and coach Flick in signing contract extensions over the past few days.

According to reports from Spanish media, his contract encompasses several bonuses tied to various accomplishments, such as winning the Ballon d’Or, in addition to a considerable salary increase.

Yamal is considered a contender for the award of the world’s best player this year.

Pellegrini: Man Utd Flop Antony wanted ‘revenge’ at Betis

Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini stated that Brazilian winger Antony sought “revenge” upon his arrival in Spain after experiencing a disappointing stint at Manchester United, as their team readied for the UEFA Conference League final against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Antony made a loan move to the La Liga club in January and has since made a remarkable comeback, netting nine goals and providing five assists across 25 matches.

At 25 years old, he became the second-most expensive player in Manchester United’s history when he transferred from Ajax in 2022 for £81.3 million ($110 million), yet he struggled to meet the expectations associated with his hefty price tag.

The winger managed to score only once for United this season prior to his transfer to Spain.

Antony informed TNT Sports Brazil before the Conference League match in Wroclaw that there was a time when he felt so despondent that he went “days without eating.”

“I confided in (my brother) that I could no longer endure it,” he remarked.

Betis manager Pellegrini expressed during his pre-match press conference in Poland on Tuesday that he felt proud of his contribution to Antony’s resurgence, while also commending the forward for his remarkable goals scored in Spain.

“I believe that Anthony did everything within his power,” he stated.

“I had a conversation with him prior to his arrival at Betis. He mentioned that he was not participating in matches because he was unhappy.

“Additionally, he sought to prove himself. Here at Betis, I believe he has demonstrated his capabilities as we know he can.”

Former Real Madrid and Manchester City manager Pellegrini acknowledged the challenges of playing under the weight of a significant transfer fee.

“Antony is an exceptionally talented player. I am completely confident that this period at Betis will be crucial for the advancement of his career.”

Chelsea, two-time European champions, have been considered the favorites to secure victory in the continent’s third-tier club competition since the season commenced.

However, Pellegrini, aged 71, expressed his confidence in his team, who finished sixth in La Liga and are competing in their inaugural European final.

“We do not perceive this as a David versus Goliath scenario,” he stated. “I believe that tomorrow we will have precisely the same chance to win the match.”

The Chilean acknowledged that early in the tournament, he had anticipated facing Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, his former assistant at West Ham, in the final.

“I sent a brief message at the start of the group stage, indicating that I envisioned us meeting in Poland for the final, and upon our arrival, I also sent a message expressing my delight at competing against him in the final,” he added.

Infinix NOTE 50 Pro In-Depth Review

The Infinix NOTE 50 Pro 4G aims to be a feature-rich mid-range smartphone combining high-end design with strong specs. Here’s a thorough look at its pros and cons based on real-world testing and customer feedback:

1. Design & Build Quality

  • High-End Materials: Has an aerospace-grade aluminum frame mixed with Damascus steel giving it strength and elegance. The back uses plastic (to cut weight) but looks “glass-like” in shades such as Enchanted Purple and Titanium Grey .
  • IP64 Rating: Gives protection from dust and water splashes, a big step up from earlier versions .
  • Bio-Active Halo Light: A light-up LED ring you can customize around the back cameras to show alerts, battery status, and health stats (heart rate/SpO2) .
  • Size & Weight: At 198g and 7.32mm thick, it’s thin but a bit heavier than the model before it .

2. Display & Multimedia

  • 6.78-inch AMOLED Display: Shows off a 144Hz refresh rate, 1300 nits peak brightness, and 93%+ screen-to-body ratio. Works great for gaming and watching videos with bright colors and deep blacks.
  • Audio: Two JBL-tuned stereo speakers produce clear sound, but the bass doesn’t impress.

3. Performance & Gaming

  • Chipset: MediaTek Helio G100 Ultimate (6nm) with 8GB/12GB RAM (you can expand to 24GB through virtual RAM). It runs casual games like Call of Duty: Mobile without issues on medium settings but has trouble with demanding titles like Genshin Impact .
  • Storage: 256GB UFS 2.2 storage—quick but not the latest tech .
  • Thermal Management: A stainless steel cooling system keeps it cool during normal use .

4. Camera System

  • Rear Cameras:
  • 50MP Main (OIS): Takes good photos in daylight with true-to-life colors and 2x lossless zoom. Night Mode helps with low-light shots but they lack detail .
  • 8MP Ultrawide: Works fine for wide-angle shots but the edges aren’t sharp .
  • 32MP Selfie Camera: Creates clear images when there’s good light but can’t handle high-contrast scenes well .
  • Video: You can shoot up to 1440p@30fps (rear) and 1080p@30fps (front). There’s no stabilization above 1080p .

5. Battery & Charging

  • 5200mAh Battery: Lasts a full day with average use. Playing games or watching videos non-stop drains it quicker.
  • 90W Wired Charging: The company says it goes from empty to full in 38 minutes, but actual tests show it takes about 55 minutes. You can also charge it at 30W and use it to charge other devices.

6. Software & AI Features

  • Android 15 with XOS 15: The UI looks neater than older Infinix skins, but some bloatware sticks around. You’ll get two big Android updates for sure.
  • One-Tap AI:
  • Folax Assistant: This voice-controlled AI helps you sum up text, translate on the spot, and handle calls.
  • Smart Touch: It spots what’s on your screen to pull out text or pictures and share them .

7. Connectivity & Extras

  • **4G LTE **: No 5G here, which stands out as missing in 2025.
  • NFC, IR Blaster, Wi-Fi 5: These come in handy to pay without contact and control your home gadgets.

Pros & Cons Summary

ProsCons
High-end construction with IP64 ratingLacks 5G compatibility
Crisp 144Hz AMOLED screenSo-so camera in dim lighting
Quick 90W charging & cordless optionBack made of plastic feels cheaper

Verdict

The Infinix NOTE 50 Pro 4G stands out as a cost-effective device packed with high-end touches like a fast display solid battery performance, and clever AI features. But its absence of 5G and weaker low-light camera performance might disappoint some. Best suited to those valuing style, speed, and affordability over the latest network tech.

3 killed, Several Injured in Limuru road accident

On Monday morning, three individuals lost their lives in an accident in the Kwambira region of Limuru, located along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway.

According to police reports, nine additional people sustained injuries in the collision involving a lorry and a matatu.

This incident occurred at the same location where seven fatalities were recorded the previous week, as noted by Limuru subcounty commander Mary Gachie.

She mentioned that investigations into the accidents are currently underway.

The crash, characterized as a head-on collision, involved a Luxury Sacco public service vehicle traveling from Western Kenya to Nairobi.

The PSV collided with an oncoming lorry that was en route to Nakuru.

Following the impact, the lorry overturned, leaving survivors trapped within the cabin of the heavy vehicle.

This situation resulted in significant traffic congestion on the busy highway, as the two vehicles obstructed the road while rescue teams hurried to assist.

Police officers and emergency response units promptly arrived at the scene, coordinating rescue operations to aid the survivors.

The incident took place around 6 am, according to police reports.

Last week, at least seven individuals were killed in the same vicinity.

Additionally, on the Nairobi-Naivasha highway in the View Point area, two people died on Saturday morning in a collision involving a government vehicle and three private cars.

Authorities have attributed these accidents to speeding.

There has been a noticeable increase in fatal accidents, prompting calls for action to address this alarming trend.

In response to the issue of road safety, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and police will be installing breathalyzers on major roads nationwide.

He stated that any driver found to be over the legal alcohol limit will face a fine of up to Ksh100,000 or a prison sentence of up to two years, or both.

Furthermore, individuals convicted of drinking and driving will be disqualified from obtaining a driver’s license for one year.

Four in court for trafficking garden ants

Four individuals, including three foreign nationals, are set to appear in court for their involvement in the trafficking of garden ants.

Authorities have announced that these four suspects will be presented before the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) court in connection with a case concerning the trafficking of garden ants.

The accused include two Belgian citizens, one Vietnamese national, and one Kenyan national, who are facing charges related to the illegal possession and attempted smuggling of numerous live garden ants. This case represents a notable intensification of Kenya’s efforts to combat unconventional wildlife crimes.

Officials have indicated that the suspects are scheduled to enter their pleas on April 14, 2025.

They are charged with dealing in live wildlife species, which is a violation of section 95(b) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.

While the origin of the ants remains unclear, the Kenya Wildlife Service has stated that the suspects are set to take their pleas.

This incident marks the latest in a series of similar cases being brought to court as part of ongoing initiatives to tackle this issue.

In 2023, three individuals were charged with the illegal exportation of safari ants valued at Sh300,000 to France.

Martin Nyota, Rose Wairimu, and Eunice Muthoni faced accusations of dealing in live wildlife species, also in violation of section 95(b) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.

They were alleged to have been engaged in the trade of live species of messer cephalates (safari ants) at JKIA without the necessary permits between June 2 and June 19.

Additionally, Rose Wairimu faced a separate charge of concealing prohibited goods, contrary to section 200 of the East Africa Community Customs Management Act of 2004.

The court was informed that between June 1 and June 19 at JKIA in Nairobi County, the accused mis-declared prohibited goods (safari ants) as handcrafted plastics and wooden jewelry with the intention of exporting them from Kenya to France.

Chemundu/Kapng’etuny ward MCA Julius Keter dies in Eldoret

Chemundu/Kapng’etuny ward Member of the County Assembly, Julius Keter, has passed away.

Philemon Melly, the speaker of the Nandi County Assembly, reported that Keter had been in poor health for the past three weeks. He succumbed to his illness at Fountain Hospital in Eldoret on Saturday at approximately 8:30 am.

Keter was first elected as the ward representative for Chemundu/Kapng’etuny in 2022 and held the position of Majority Whip.

Melly expressed his sorrow, stating, “Keter had been unwell for the last three weeks. He sadly lost his battle at Fountain Hospital Eldoret.” He characterized Keter as a legend and a devoted public servant who committed his life to improving the welfare of his constituents.

“The community will always remember his relentless efforts, steadfast dedication, and genuine affection for the people,” he added.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang extended his condolences to Keter’s family, remarking, “Keter was not only a colleague but also a friend and a dedicated public servant. His steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of his constituents, along with his humility and thoughtful leadership, will be profoundly missed.”

Sang noted that Keter was a strong advocate for development and a prominent voice within the assembly.

Residents of Chemundu/Kapng’etuny ward expressed their grief over the loss of their MCA, with many acknowledging that his dedication and generosity would be sorely missed.

A group of youths highlighted Keter’s prompt responses to their concerns, remembering him for launching initiatives aimed at transforming lives.

Keter was elected under the UDA party banner. His passing contributes to the increasing number of by-elections that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will need to conduct.

Meru: Three arrested with elephant tusks weighing 60Kgs

Three individuals suspected of poaching were apprehended over the weekend while transporting two elephant tusks weighing a total of 60 kilograms in Nkubu, Meru County.

Authorities from the police and the Kenya Wildlife Service reported that the tusks are valued at 6 million Kenyan Shillings.

This arrest was the result of a coordinated security operation conducted in the Kigene area of Nkubu Township.

The suspects were found transporting the tusks in a sedan, having hidden the items within a sack.

The operation took place at night on April 11, 2025, and law enforcement is currently seeking additional suspects connected to this case.

Investigators aim to determine the origin of the tusks, which are believed to have come from an elephant killed in the nearby Meru National Park.

The three individuals are expected to appear in court to face charges for possessing wildlife trophies from endangered species, in violation of Section 92(4) of the Wildlife Conservation Management Act of 2013.

This seizure occurred despite ongoing efforts and campaigns aimed at combating poaching in the region and across the country.

Elephant tusks command high prices on the black market, driven by increasing demand for ivory in the East, which continues to support the illegal trade of elephant tusks, particularly from Africa.

The illicit ivory trade is primarily fueled by demand in Asia and the Middle East, where elephant tusks and rhino horns are utilized in the creation of ornaments and traditional medicines.

Officials have noted that, despite a global ban on the ivory trade, African elephants continue to be poached in significant numbers.

In response to this crisis, Kenya has begun employing advanced surveillance technologies, including drones, to monitor poachers and track elephant and rhino populations.

The Kenya Wildlife Service, along with various stakeholders, has implemented strategies to eliminate all forms of wildlife crime, particularly poaching.

These strategies encompass enhanced community education, interagency collaboration, and intensive intelligence-driven operations, among other initiatives.

As a result of these efforts, Kenya achieved zero rhino poaching in 2020, marking the first occurrence of such a milestone in nearly twenty years.

A government official from Somalia confirmed that the company has received a license to operate within the country.

Mustafa Yasiin, the director of communication in the telecommunications ministry, stated in a video shared on the state news agency SONNA’s Facebook page that discussions with Starlink have been ongoing for two and a half years, culminating in the issuance of the license today.

He expressed optimism that Starlink will enhance the quality of internet services in Somalia and extend connectivity to more remote regions.

Van Dijk Teases Fans with Liverpool Loyalty

Virgil van Dijk conveyed his deep affection for Liverpool and his pride in serving as the club’s captain, hinting at a potential contract extension following his late goal that secured a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday.

The Dutch defender’s current contract is set to expire at the season’s conclusion, but reports indicate that he is nearing an agreement to join Mohamed Salah in signing a new deal.

Although Van Dijk did not perform at his usual high standard defensively, as he and Andy Robertson inadvertently allowed West Ham to equalize just four minutes before the end, he quickly redeemed himself by heading in a corner from Alexis Mac Allister, which helped Liverpool establish a 13-point lead at the top of the league.

Liverpool requires a maximum of six points from their remaining six matches and could clinch the title as soon as next weekend, depending on the outcomes of other games.

“I am extremely proud to have captained my 100th match for Liverpool,” Van Dijk stated to Sky Sports when asked about his future.

“The primary goal was to secure three points and move closer to achieving our collective aspirations—not just for us as players and staff, but for everyone associated with Liverpool FC.

“Everyone is aware of my love for this club, and we will see what unfolds next week.”

Salah has encouraged his long-time teammate to remain at Anfield after resolving his own future by signing a two-year contract.

“I’m pleased to have done that early, before the season concludes, and I hope Virgil will follow suit,” Salah remarked. “I would love to see him here again next year.”

Engine Malfunction Ruled As The Cause of CDF Francis Ogolla’s Helicopter Crashed – Report

The Ministry of Defence has disclosed that the unfortunate helicopter crash on April 18, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of former Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla and nine other Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) members, was due to an engine failure.

In a statement released on Friday, the ministry indicated that the Bell Huey helicopter KAF 1501 experienced a surge, corroborating witness accounts of a loud noise from the engine area.

Following this surge, the helicopter lost all power, leading to a decrease in the engine’s Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) and a noticeable change in engine sound. The RPM is a measure of the engine’s speed and power output.

The ministry reviewed the entire mission, from the team’s departure from Wilson Airport to Kainuk, Chesogon, and then to the Defence Forces Recruits Training School in Eldoret, confirming that the crew had completed all necessary pre-flight checks.

Additionally, the government eliminated weather conditions, crew coordination, and pilot experience as potential causes of the crash.

The ministry emphasized that both pilots were fully prepared for the mission, as per the Flying Order Book (FOB) Standard Operating Procedures.

During the mission planning, the government noted that the crew had ample time to perform Before Flight Checks with the first Line Personnel.

The aircraft had also undergone 25 hours of servicing from April 2 to April 5, 2024, to meet the highest safety standards.

“The Huey Helicopter KAF 1501 was found to have a high reliability level, having successfully completed numerous operational and training missions, including VIP flights. Moreover, the flight was conducted by a qualified and competent crew,” the statement partially noted.

The ministry has also acknowledged that the Kenya Air Force has revised and updated its Standard Operating Procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
