Tanzania MP Jesca Msambatavangu responds to Kenyan Gen Zs over WhatsApp messages

Tanzania’s Iringa Town MP Jesca Msambatavangu

Tanzania’s Iringa Town MP Jesca Msambatavangu has addressed a surge of messages from Kenyans following her comments regarding the detention and deportation of two East African activists.

The backlash ensued after Tanzanian lawmakers defended President Samia Suluhu Hassan in light of increasing criticism from Kenyans concerning the treatment of activists within the nation.

In reaction, numerous Kenyans on the social media platform X shared the contact information of lawmakers and sent messages to voice their discontent.

Msambatavangu, however, expressed her appreciation for the engagement, disclosing that she stayed up late conversing with Kenyans.

“I thank our Kenyan brothers and sisters. We were chatting until 3 a.m. before I paused to attend parliamentary duties,” she stated. “Once I’m free, we’ll continue the discussion.”

She urged the Kenyan youth, especially those from Generation Z, to establish a WhatsApp group for more effective communication and assured them of her participation in a live session on Saturday.

“To those praising or criticizing us, we must counter ideas with ideas,” she remarked. “Kenyans are our neighbors, our brothers, and we cannot ignore each other.”

Her comments follow a vigorous debate in Tanzania’s Parliament on Monday, where Geita MP Joseph Musukuma accused Kenyans of meddling in Tanzanian matters and disrespecting national sovereignty.

“We are far ahead of them politically and intellectually. We excel in everything. Speaking good English isn’t a priority for us,” Musukuma stated, dismissing Kenyan criticism as mere online noise.

The controversy originates from the May 18 arrest and deportation of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire.

The two were in Tanzania to observe the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. They were reportedly detained without communication, mistreated, and deported—triggering widespread condemnation throughout East Africa and beyond.

As tensions escalate, Msambatavangu’s appeal for dialogue seems to adopt a gentler, more diplomatic approach, even as others within Tanzania’s political sphere adopt a more stringent stance.

UoN student fined Ksh.7.5M for defaming prophet Owuor’s driver

An Eldoret court has imposed a fine of Ksh.7.5 million on a third-year law student from the University of Nairobi due to a cyber harassment charge as stipulated in the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No 5 of 2018.

The court awarded this amount to Benard Kagia, a driver associated with Prophet David Owuor of the Repentance and Holiness Ministry, following a defamation lawsuit he initiated against Facebook user Kevin Ndung’u Kiriga.

The conflict originated when the law student referred to Kagia as a prostitute in a Facebook post three years prior.

The court was informed that the student made an additional post on Facebook, indicating that the driver was incapable of supporting his family.

Reports indicate that Kiriga had accused Kagia of being unfaithful, a post that led to the dissolution of the marriage between the driver and his wife.

Feeling aggrieved by the post, which he deemed defamatory and damaging, the driver sought legal recourse by filing a libel case against the third-year law student from the University of Nairobi.

In his judgment, Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan stated that the statements made in the accused’s Facebook post were indeed defamatory.

While delivering the ruling, Mikoyan urged for civility among digital platform users, emphasizing that defamatory remarks made online could lead to significant legal consequences.

The student expressed his discontent regarding the substantial fine imposed on him, stating that he was unable to raise the specified amount as mandated by the court.

He informed the court that he possesses no property or assets that could be sold to generate the over Ksh.7 million required to be paid to the plaintiff as ordered by the court.

The case is scheduled to be revisited on May 28, 2025, for further instructions.

Thieves break into church, drink altar wine and eat sacraments in Kirinyaga

Authorities have initiated investigations following a burglary at a church in Kirinyaga, where intruders consumed altar wine, devoured sacramental bread, and absconded with church belongings.

Local residents are still in disbelief over the incident that took place at ACK St. Matthew’s Mutithi Church.

As reported by the church’s vice chairman, Eliud Githaka, the theft was brought to light by choir members who noticed the keyboard was missing.

The night guard has been accused of negligence, as the theft occurred during his watch.

“The guard failed to notice that the church had been breached, and we suspect he may have been asleep while on duty,” residents remarked.

Police officers arrived at the church on Monday night and reassured the congregation that the investigation is in progress.

Church officials further stated, “We are now compelled to hire our own security staff rather than depending on the current guard.”

Despite her attempts to seek help from local leaders, Atieno reports that her efforts to secure funds for the burial have been in vain.

Moja EV And GreenMax Capital Group launch electric car financing scheme for Uber drivers

GreenMax Capital Group has collaborated with Moja EV to initiate a pilot program for financing electric vehicles (EVs) aimed at Uber drivers.

Backed by concessional funding from the Dutch non-profit organization IKEA Foundation, this initiative seeks to enhance the affordability and accessibility of EV ownership while reducing carbon emissions.

Clifford Aaron, CEO of GreenMax, stated that the pilot will initially support 20 drivers, with the company assuming the first-loss risk to attract additional financiers to the EV sector.

“We are taking on 20% of the risk to ensure that the financing package is both bankable and affordable,” Aaron remarked during the launch event in Nairobi.

Drivers will lease the EVs at significantly lower daily rates, ultimately transitioning to full ownership. Moja EV will manage repossessions in cases of long-term defaults but assures flexibility for drivers encountering temporary challenges such as illness or family emergencies.

Moja EV is contributing 80% of the capital, while GreenMax is providing the remaining 20%, which includes assuming the initial default risk to promote inclusive lending.

Wang Ai Ping, CEO of Moja EV, indicated that the pilot serves as a foundation for a larger $150 million rollout aimed at electric Matatus and buses, set to commence in September.

“This model demonstrates that EV financing is effective, particularly for drivers in the informal sector,” Ping stated.

He further noted that previous EV rollouts faced limitations due to short battery ranges, but new vehicles now offer over 300km per charge, allowing drivers to complete full shifts.

“We have deployed 100 EVs and gathered valuable data to expand this model nationwide, including for women and youth,” he added.

However, Ping expressed concerns regarding the high import taxes on EVs, which can reach up to 90%, nearly doubling the local cost of vehicles. He cautioned that the company may consider relocating manufacturing to Tanzania or Rwanda if the policy environment does not improve.

“We were promised tax waivers for the first 100,000 EVs, but we are currently facing 75% in duties,”

Ken Shadrack Obuya, the Chair of the Drive Electric Group SACCO, expressed his support for the initiative, describing it as a transformative development.

“With Ksh 1,500 worth of electricity, one can travel to Nakuru and return. It is more economical and environmentally friendly,” he stated.

The stakeholders called on the government to amend electric vehicle policies, simplify customs processes, and enhance charging infrastructure to facilitate Kenya’s transition to clean and affordable transportation.
