Amb. Meg Whitman: United States Is Committed To Working With Kenya To Enhance Quality Healthcare Access

The United States of America has pledged to keep supporting Kenya in expanding access to quality healthcare.

According to US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, the US embassy is pleased to collaborate with Kenyan officials who are placing a high priority on health issues because having access to high-quality healthcare is the cornerstone of a robust and vibrant community.

She said that the US government has been fostering intergovernmental ties just as much as private US persons and groups have with their Kenyan counterparts.

“The US Embassy is proud to work with Kenyan leaders prioritising the health of Kenyans. These partnerships between private US citizens and organisations and their Kenyan counterparts are the foundation of our two countries’ strong relationship,” said Amb. Whitman.

Speaking in Siaya during the opening of an intensive care unit and an operating theater at Matibabu, which was made possible by a collaboration between US private citizens and the Tiba Foundation in the Ugenya sub-county, the US Envoy remarked that the project exemplified the value of teamwork.

Amb. Whitman noted that the new building will contribute to providing the residents of Siaya County and the surrounding Lake region with high-quality medical services.

Governor James Orengo of Siaya praised the US government’s commitment, pointing out that this kind of cooperation will be very beneficial.

He said that some non-communicable and communicable diseases that continue to be a problem in Siaya County will be effectively addressed through such partnerships.

Renault Scenic E-Tech 2024 Review

The Renault Scenic E-Tech is the French automaker’s latest entry into the increasingly crowded electric minivan market. It’s a bold redesign of the iconic Scenic, now boasting a sleek, crossover-inspired look and a fully electric powertrain. Let’s delve into the details and see how this family-friendly EV stacks up.

Design and Styling:

  • Modern and Eye-Catching: The Scenic E-Tech ditches the boxy silhouette of its predecessors for a more stylish and aerodynamic design. The long hood, sloping roofline, and muscular fenders give it a decidedly crossover feel, while the prominent LED headlights and taillights add a touch of futuristic flair.
  • Spacious and Practical: Despite its sleek looks, the Scenic E-Tech remains true to its MPV roots. It offers ample interior space for up to seven passengers, with plenty of headroom and legroom even in the third row. The cargo capacity is also impressive, with 545 liters with the rear seats up and a cavernous 1670 liters with them folded down.
  • Sustainable Materials: Renault has made a concerted effort to use recycled and sustainable materials throughout the Scenic E-Tech. The floor mats are made from recycled fishing nets, while the upholstery is partially composed of recycled plastic bottles.

Performance and Range:

  • Two Battery Options: The Scenic E-Tech comes in two battery variants: a 60kWh option with a range of up to 249 miles (WLTP) and an 87kWh version with a range of up to 338 miles (WLTP). This should cater to a variety of driving needs and budgets.
  • Decent but Not Thrilling: The Scenic E-Tech isn’t designed for blistering acceleration. The 170 horsepower motor in the 60kWh model delivers a 0-60 mph time of 9.3 seconds, while the 220 horsepower motor in the 87kWh version gets you there in 7.9 seconds. However, the electric motor provides instant torque, making the car feel peppy around town.
  • Comfortable and Refined Ride: The Scenic E-Tech prioritizes comfort over sporty handling. The suspension is well-tuned to soak up bumps and imperfections in the road, making for a smooth and relaxing ride.

Technology and Features:

  • Digital Cockpit: The Scenic E-Tech features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system is intuitive and user-friendly, and it controls everything from navigation and climate to audio and vehicle settings.
  • Driver Assistance Systems: The Scenic E-Tech comes loaded with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.
  • Panoramic Sunroof: The optional panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with natural light and adds to the airy feel of the interior.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Pricing: The Scenic E-Tech starts at around €35,000 in Europe, which is competitive for an electric minivan. However, pricing for the US market has not yet been announced.
  • Competition: The Scenic E-Tech faces competition from other electric minivans like the Peugeot e-Rifter and the Citroen ë-Berlingo. However, it stands out with its longer range and more stylish design.
  • Availability: The Scenic E-Tech is currently available in Europe, but it will not arrive in the US until later in 2024.

Verdict:

The Renault Scenic E-Tech is a compelling option for families looking for a spacious, practical, and stylish electric minivan. It offers a comfortable ride, a decent range, and a plethora of tech features. While it might not be the most exciting car to drive, its focus on comfort and practicality makes it ideal for everyday use.

I hope this detailed review of the Renault Scenic E-Tech has been helpful. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Mercedes-AMG C63 (2024): A Detailed Review

The Mercedes-AMG C63 has been a staple in the high-performance sports sedan segment for years, known for its thunderous V8 engine and aggressive driving dynamics. However, 2024 marks a significant shift for the C63, as it ditches the V8 in favor of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Let’s take a deep dive into the new C63 and see how it stacks up against its predecessors and in today’s electrified landscape.

Engine and Performance:

  • Hybrid Powerhouse: The heart of the C63 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 671 horsepower and a monstrous 752 lb-ft of torque. This is more power than any production four-cylinder in the world!
  • Electrifying Acceleration: The C63 rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it one of the quickest sedans on the market. The electric motor provides instant torque, making the acceleration feel effortless.
  • Surprisingly Efficient: Despite its performance, the C63 can also be surprisingly efficient. The plug-in hybrid system offers up to 12 miles of electric driving range, and even when the battery is depleted, the C63 achieves an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined.

Handling and Driving Dynamics:

  • Agile and Balanced: The C63 inherits the sharp handling of the standard C-Class, but with added AMG tuning for even better precision. The steering is direct and responsive, and the car feels planted even at high speeds.
  • Adjustable Driving Experience: The C63 offers a variety of driving modes, from Comfort to Sport+ and Race, that tailor the car’s performance to your preferences. You can adjust the suspension stiffness, steering weight, and powertrain responsiveness to suit the driving situation.
  • Not as Playful as its Predecessor: Some reviewers have criticized the new C63 for not being as playful and engaging as the V8-powered model. The extra weight from the hybrid system and the lack of a manual transmission contribute to this.

Interior and Technology:

  • Luxurious and Tech-Savvy: The C63’s interior is a blend of luxury and technology. It features high-quality materials, supportive sport seats, and a widescreen infotainment system that controls everything from navigation to climate.
  • AMG-Specific Touches: AMG-branded steering wheel, shift paddles, and floor mats add a touch of performance flair to the interior.
  • Missing Some Character: While the interior is undeniably luxurious, some reviewers have found it to be a bit sterile compared to the more characterful cabin of the previous C63.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Pricing: The C63 starts at around $87,000, which is a significant increase over the previous model.
  • Competition: The C63 faces stiff competition from other high-performance sedans, such as the BMW M3, Audi RS 5, and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
  • Availability: The C63 is still relatively new, so availability may be limited in some markets.

Verdict:

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 is a technological marvel that offers blistering performance, sharp handling, and a luxurious interior. While the loss of the V8 might sting for some purists, the hybrid powertrain delivers its own unique thrills and offers a glimpse into the future of performance cars. However, the increased weight and slightly subdued character compared to the previous model might be a consideration for some.

Overall, the C63 remains a compelling choice for those seeking a high-performance sports sedan with cutting-edge technology and a luxurious driving experience.

Tuesday night, a middle-aged guy who had apparently escaped arrest drowned in Kambala village in Kericho County after falling into a river.

The man tried to steal his mother’s cow in order to sell it for his own purposes, according to the police.

When his siblings saw the family cow was missing from the shed, they set out to get it right away.

After a while, they learned that the man had driven the cow in a certain direction. They tracked him down right away, forcing him to give the cow back to its rightful owner.

When the assistant chief of the area and the assistant county commissioner happened to walk by when they were returning the cow, they noticed the man being frog-matched and stopped to find out more.

CS Chelugui: Gov’t Committed To Transferring Devolved Functions To Counties.

The national government has reaffirmed its pledge to give the counties the remaining devolved responsibilities within the deadlines specified.

By the end of February, the functions will be moved, with the understanding that resources—a source of conflict—will follow.

In a meeting with the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, who oversees the development of cooperatives and SMEs, expressed optimism that the transfer exercise will be finished in less than a month.

In order to prevent service delivery from being impacted, Chelugui claims that the government will provide a smooth transition of responsibilities.

He declared that as part of strengthening devolution, the national government is dedicated to the process as it is outlined in the constitution.

Speaking to the media subsequent to the meeting, Chelugui stated that the Commission of Revenue Allocation (CRA) is in charge of handling the resource issue for the outstanding functions.

According to Chelugui, all cooperative resources and operations would be transferred as part of the ongoing procedure, which is anticipated to be completed by February.

He added that farmer-owned co-operative societies are the reason the dairy industry has prospered and that this will strengthen the co-operative movement.

As part of unbundling functions, IGRTC Chairman Kithinji Kiragu committed to assist counties in developing their ability.

He praised the cooperation between the federal and local governments, pointing out that it has aided in the process of transfer.

Despite being rescued, he had injuries to his leg and hand.

Media Council Denounces Siaya Journalists’ Fight

The three journalists who got into a fight on Sunday during an event in Siaya County that resulted in one of them getting hurt has been denounced by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK).

The fight between journalists from The Star newspaper, K24 television, and Royal Media Services, according to a statement released by MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo on Tuesday, puts their credibility as professionals in jeopardy.

“The Council unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, including those perpetrated by members of the press against their own or on members of the public. Journalists resorting to physical fights and engaging in slander not only jeopardizes their professional credibility but also undermines the principles of responsible journalism,” he said.

After The Star published an article about the event, the Council issued additional warnings to media outlets cautioning them against running biased reports on the subject.

“The Council is ready to offer its support and assistance to the journalists involved in this incident. We encourage them to seek mediation or other forms of conflict resolution to address the underlying issues and prevent future violence. Further, we urge media houses to stop publishing one-sided stories written by the respective employees as this causes more confusion and veils facts during a conflict,” said Omwoyo.

MCK stated that it has looked into the situation and advised the parties concerned to face consequences.

The event has already been looked into by the Council, which encourages the relevant media outlets to look into it thoroughly and take the necessary disciplinary action.

“The Council has already investigated the incident and urges the relevant media organizations to equally undertake a comprehensive investigation and take appropriate disciplinary action against those invoked. Any accredited journalists engaged in such altercations risk losing their registration with the Council, Journalists have a responsibility to conduct themselves with integrity and decorum, even in the face of aggression.” noted the MCK chair.

Redeploying teachers to St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School approved by TSC.

Redeploying teachers to Kakamega County’s St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School has been approved by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The decision to transfer all teachers from the school was made by TSC following a meeting between the teachers’ employer and Western Kenyan Members of Parliament, who expressed their sincere regret for the violent dismissal of the school principal.

At the TSC’s offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on Tuesday, legislators from the area were led by Mumias East MP Peter Salasya in a mission to seek a truce.

“The entire leadership of Kakamega County including the area MP Salasya have unreservedly tendered their apology to the Principal and all teachers in the Republic, the TSC and the people of Kenya over the unfortunate incident that occurred at St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School,” said Emmanuel Wangwe, MP for Navakholo.

According to TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, the commission would return teachers to the school, provided that the school agrees to provide a secure and tranquil working environment for the teachers.

“We are, therefore, happy that the local leaders considered it wise to come and meet with us today with as solution. As a result of our deliberations, I wish to announce that the commission will post 17 trained and registered teachers to the school to ensure that normal teaching and learning activities resume with immediate effect,” she said.

In sharp contrast, Soy MP David Kiplagat has had to hire 10 teachers at St. Martin Secondary School after the TSC removed 7 instructors due to a similar situation in which the principal was forcibly removed by the parents due to subpar KCSE exam results from the previous year.

“As leaders from this region we can make sure our school is operational, with or without mambo ya TSC. But also the action that TSC took to recall all the teachers from this school, I think whoever took that action was not in the best interests of the child,” he said.

The lawmaker argues that parents have the right to expect their children to perform well, and TSC is tasked with making sure students receive the best quality of education
