A former Assistant Chief from Kisumu County has received a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of murder.
Joel Juma Oliewo, who previously served as the Assistant Chief of Upper Kadongo sub-location in Kisumu-West Sub County, was found guilty of killing Eric Ochieng Atito on October 7, 2021, in Kadawa village.
On August 19, 2024, Justice Roselyne Aburili of the Kisumu High Court determined that the prosecution had established Oliewo’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to his defense being called.
After reviewing the evidence presented, Justice Aburili concluded that it was compelling enough to require Oliewo to defend himself against the charges.
The trial, which commenced on November 14, 2023, featured testimony from 11 protection witnesses.
Justice Aburili emphasized that Oliewo’s sentence serves as a warning to others in similar roles, reinforcing the importance of upholding the law rather than taking matters into their own hands.
