Traffic on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway faced significant disruption on Saturday, December 7, following a fire that engulfed a Modern Coast bus.
The incident occurred near the Gilgil weighbridge while the bus was en route from Nairobi to Kampala, Uganda.
Fortunately, all 23 passengers were evacuated without serious injuries or fatalities reported at the time of this article’s publication. However, they were unable to recover their personal belongings.
According to a police statement, the fire broke out around 09:40 in the Kigio Conservancy area. The report confirmed that all passengers escaped unharmed and that officers were dispatched to investigate the cause of the blaze.
Videos circulating online showed flames erupting from the bus as it continued to move before eventually coming to a halt.
As of the latest updates, the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. Vehicles traveling in the same direction were forced to seek alternative routes due to the thick smoke emanating from the burning bus.
Onlookers, presumed to be passengers, were observed standing by the roadside. Firefighters have successfully extinguished the flames, and recovery efforts are underway to clear the wreckage from the highway.
