The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced that the Thika Superhighway will experience partial closures from December 12 to December 17.
This closure will take place at the Juja Highpoint (Centurion) to facilitate the construction of a footbridge.
KeNHA has advised the public to anticipate traffic disruptions due to this closure.
“Nairobi-bound traffic will be redirected behind the Lexo petrol station before rejoining the Superhighway, while Thika-bound traffic will be diverted behind the Centurion hotel before returning to the Superhighway,” the authority stated.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution in the vicinity of the construction areas, adhere to the traffic management plan, and cooperate with police and traffic marshals present.
In December 2022, former Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen mandated the construction of at least four footbridges along the Thika Superhighway.
He indicated that the installation of these footbridges would facilitate pedestrian movement and reduce the frequency of accidents on this heavily trafficked highway.
KeNHA plans to construct the bridges at the Juja Highpoint near the Centurion hotel, the Kihunguro section, the Juja Mona Park area, and the Clay Works/Northlands.
“Further footbridges are scheduled for installation at various locations along the Thika Superhighway, with engineering designs already completed,” Murkomen noted at that time.
He was addressing inquiries from Ruiru MP Simon King’ara regarding safety measures on Thika Road.
Murkomen also mentioned that the government would implement several strategies to mitigate accidents on this busy highway.
These strategies include public awareness campaigns regarding the use of designated crossing points and passenger pick-up and drop-off zones, as well as the installation of road signage.
Additionally, he stated that the government is enhancing the marking of road bumps to improve the safety of road users.
