Eleven individuals lost their lives following a tragic incident in Peru, where a bus transporting students, teachers, and parents fell off a cliffside road, as reported by authorities on Sunday.
The Andina news agency indicated that the bus, which was carrying 57 passengers, collided head-on with a van before veering off the roadway on Saturday.
Jorge Sanchez, the director of the regional directorate of San Martin, informed AFP, “We have confirmed 11 fatalities from the accident, including five 17-year-old students and a two-year-old child.”
In addition, authorities reported that 18 individuals sustained injuries.
The bus was en route from Piura, located in northern Peru, to the Amazonian department of San Martin, carrying a group of schoolchildren, their families, and teachers.
The crash occurred in the province of Moyobamba within the San Martin region while the high school students were on a class trip.
Peru has a notable prevalence of bus accidents, with the Ministry of Transport and Communications recording 3,138 traffic-related fatalities in 2023.
