SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system has officially launched in Somalia, as announced by owner Elon Musk on the social media platform X on Sunday.
A government official from Somalia confirmed that the company has received a license to operate within the country.
Mustafa Yasiin, the director of communication in the telecommunications ministry, stated in a video shared on the state news agency SONNA’s Facebook page that discussions with Starlink have been ongoing for two and a half years, culminating in the issuance of the license today.
He expressed optimism that Starlink will enhance the quality of internet services in Somalia and extend connectivity to more remote regions.
