A requiem mass held in Kimilili, Trans Nzoia County, to pay tribute to the late former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati descended into chaos on Friday when local Governor George Natembeya was reportedly ambushed by hired goons shortly after his arrival.

Natembeya stated that upon his entrance, Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, who had seemingly left the event earlier, returned with a rowdy crowd that aggressively confronted his team, necessitating police intervention.

The officers allegedly instructed Bisau to vacate the area. However, Natembeya claims the MP directed the unruly group to position themselves along the roadside to ambush his convoy as it departed.

In the midst of the turmoil, Natembeya’s driver, Kaitano Siphas, sustained a neck injury while trying to protect the Governor from a barrage of stones. Additionally, two police officers were injured and are currently receiving medical care.

Natembeya has condemned the attack, labeling it a “disgraceful and barbaric” effort to instill fear and disrupt peace.

The Governor of Trans Nzoia has urged law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

He reassured residents that his administration will not be intimidated by such acts and will persist in its efforts to create a safer and more prosperous county for everyone.
