A man has been apprehended by police in Eldoret for allegedly murdering a Form 2 student, who is believed to have been his girlfriend.

The tragic event took place at Gem Farm in the Moiben sub-county of Uasin Gishu.

The suspect, who works as a boda boda rider, turned himself in to the authorities on Friday and reportedly confessed to the crime.

According to Uasin Gishu county police commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the suspect had picked up the girl from a local mixed secondary school before taking her to a lodging at Gem Farm, where they spent some time together.

“After the incident, he contacted the local chief to inform him that he had killed his girlfriend,” Mwanthi stated.

Following his call to the chief, the suspect, who operates his boda boda business in the vicinity, walked to a nearby police station to report the crime.

The chief and police quickly responded to the scene, where they discovered the girl’s body wrapped in a blanket.

“He was subsequently arrested and detained as we initiated an investigation into the matter,” Mwanthi added.

While the motive behind the murder remains unclear, the suspect is believed to have strangled the girl following a dispute over unspecified issues.

Mwanthi urged parents to remain vigilant about their children’s whereabouts, particularly those attending day schools.

“As parents, we must prioritize the safety of our children, both in and out of school,” he emphasized.

The suspect will undergo interrogation and statement recording before being processed for court.

“He is cooperating with the investigation, after which he will be presented in court regarding this incident,” Mwanthi confirmed.

The community has expressed outrage over the killing of the schoolgirl, condemning the act.
