In Butula, Busia County, police faced significant challenges in stopping residents from siphoning fuel after a tanker overturned.

According to the officers, the driver lost control of the vehicle on the Kisumu-Busia road.

The incident occurred in the Rakite area, just a short distance from the police station. Witnesses reported that the driver was speeding toward the Kenya-Uganda border when he lost control, causing the tanker to flip over by the roadside.

As the vehicle lay overturned, locals quickly gathered with containers in hand, ready to collect the spilled fuel.

This incident echoes a tragic event from 2021, when a petrol tanker explosion in the Malanga area on the Kisumu-Busia highway resulted in the deaths of 13 people, all of whom were attempting to siphon fuel from an overturned tanker.
