A tanker explosion has resulted in the deaths of 77 individuals who had gathered to collect fuel from the site, according to authorities.
The incident occurred when the tanker overturned and released its contents in the Suleja region of North Central Niger state on Saturday.
The explosion took place shortly after individuals began to scoop up the spilled fuel, leading to numerous fatalities and injuring 25 others, including rescue personnel, as reported by officials.
Explosions and accidents involving fuel tankers are frequent in Nigeria, often attributed to the poor condition of roads and inadequately maintained vehicles.
Those injured in the explosion are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals, as stated by the emergency management agency.
In recent months, Nigeria has experienced several similar incidents.
Just two weeks prior, a fuel tanker involved in a collision exploded in the oil-rich Delta state, resulting in at least five fatalities, while an explosion in October claimed the lives of at least 153 individuals who were attempting to collect leaking petrol.
Fuel prices have surged by over 400% in the past 18 months due to significant economic reforms implemented by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, which included the elimination of long-standing fuel subsidies.
These changes have plunged millions into poverty, compelling many to resort to desperate measures for survival.
The government asserts that its policies are designed to bolster the economy.
