A senior official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was tragically killed during a robbery at her residence in Utange, Mombasa County, on Sunday.
Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, aged 48, served as the elections manager for IEBC in Kilifi County. She and her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan, were assaulted around 3 a.m. by two assailants at their home.
The son sustained serious injuries and was subsequently admitted to a local hospital, according to police reports.
The perpetrators made off with electronic items from the residence before fleeing the scene.
Police were alerted by officials at Premier Hospital regarding the death of a robbery victim who had been admitted there.
Upon investigation, it was determined that the assailants invaded the home around 3 a.m. in Utange Mkunguni, attacking both the mother and son. One of the attackers was reportedly wearing a face mask.
They gained entry by cutting through the kitchen window grills while armed with a crowbar and a knife.
The deceased suffered stab wounds and lacerations to her head, particularly above the right eye, while her son was also injured on the head.
Following the assault, the gang stole the deceased’s mobile phone, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and an iPad, after injuring her son.
The son managed to drive his mother to Premier Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, while he received treatment and had not yet been discharged.
Police later conducted a visit to the scene as part of their investigation to locate the individuals responsible for the attack.
The IEBC has not yet released a statement regarding this incident.
Authorities indicated that they are following several leads in connection with the attack.
