A night of revelry at the Imperial Lounge in Yatta, Machakos County was abruptly interrupted in the early hours of Friday when a police officer discharged his weapon following a dispute over a woman.
Police Constable Fredrick Kipchoge, stationed at Matuu Police Station, created significant unrest around 2:40 am, leading a staff member at the establishment to alert the authorities.
As detailed in a police report reviewed by Citizen Digital, officers arrived at the scene only to discover that Kipchoge had already left the lounge upon noticing their approach.
He returned to the police station at 5:25 am, where he seized an AK-47 rifle, equipped with 30 rounds of ammunition, from the reports office. This firearm was intended for another officer assigned to patrol duties.
With the assault rifle in hand, Kipchoge proceeded back to the lounge, trailed by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and additional police personnel.
Upon their arrival, officers questioned his motives. Kipchoge asserted that he intended to apprehend a man he accused of taking his girlfriend.
In an effort to disarm him, officers approached from behind, which led to a tumultuous situation where Kipchoge discharged all 30 rounds from the rifle. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident, and the police were able to successfully disarm and apprehend him.
He was subsequently returned to Matuu Police Station, where he was placed in custody.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Yatta is currently undertaking further inquiries into the matter.
