A body was discovered in the landing gear compartment, commonly referred to as the wheel well, of a United Airlines aircraft following its arrival in Hawaii on Christmas Eve, according to the airline.
Flight 202 took off from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday morning and arrived at Kahului Airport in Maui later that afternoon.
United Airlines stated that it remains uncertain how or when the individual accessed the landing gear, which is only reachable from the exterior of the Boeing 787-10 model.
The airline confirmed that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to facilitate an investigation.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
In a statement to Hawaii News Now, the police department indicated that an investigation is underway.
“Concerning a deceased person found on an incoming flight from the mainland this afternoon. Currently, no additional information is available.”
The BBC has reached out to the Maui Police Department for further comment.
