The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption at the Kangemi Interchange along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi. This disruption is attributed to scheduled construction activities for the Kangemi bridge, which will take place from December 11, 2024, to January 17, 2025.
In a statement, KeNHA informed the public about the impending traffic changes on the A8 Highway (Waiyaki Way). The construction will be executed in two distinct phases.
Phase 1 will involve the diversion of Nairobi-bound traffic (left-hand side) to the right-hand side, commencing on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, and concluding on Monday, December 26, 2024.
Phase 2 will see Nakuru/Rironi-bound traffic (right-hand side) redirected to the left-hand side, starting on Saturday, December 28, 2024, and ending on Friday, January 17, 2025.
KeNHA has urged motorists to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and to cooperate with police and traffic marshals present at the site.
In a related announcement, KeNHA indicated that the Thika Superhighway will experience partial closures from December 12 to December 17. This closure will occur at the Juja Highpoint (Centurion) to facilitate the construction of a footbridge.
The authority has cautioned the public to anticipate traffic disruptions due to this closure. Nairobi-bound traffic will be redirected behind the Lexo petrol station before rejoining the Superhighway, while Thika-bound traffic will be diverted behind the Centurion hotel before returning to the Superhighway.
In December 2022, the then Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, mandated the construction of at least four footbridges along the Thika Superhighway. He emphasized that the installation of these footbridges would enhance pedestrian movement and reduce the frequency of accidents along this heavily trafficked highway.
KeNHA is set to construct bridges at the Juja Highpoint stage adjacent to the Centurion Hotel, in the Kihunguro section, the Juja Mona Park area, and at Clay Works/Northlands.
“Plans are in place for the installation of additional footbridges at various locations along the Thika Superhighway, and the engineering design has been completed,” Murkomen stated.
This statement was made in response to inquiries from Ruiru MP Simon King’ara regarding the safety measures implemented along Thika Road.
