A somber atmosphere enveloped the Emuhaya sub-county hospital in Vihiga County as family members and friends gathered at the facility following the tragic deaths of two individuals, including a minor, believed to be linked to a case of food poisoning.
Dr. Benjamin Onduso, the Vihiga County Director of Health, reported that on Monday around 10 a.m., two patients were admitted displaying symptoms of watery diarrhea and vomiting.
Dr. Onduso noted that while the initial two patients were treated and stabilized, more individuals began arriving by 11 a.m. with similar symptoms.
The shared factor among those affected was a meal of rice and beans consumed during a fundraiser at a PAG church in Luanda on Sunday.
As of now, at least 58 church members have been admitted to the same hospital, with two in critical condition and fighting for their lives.
Dr. Onduso confirmed that samples from the patients and the leftover food in question have been sent for toxicology testing, and they are currently awaiting the results.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the PAG is urging its members to remain calm as investigations continue.
