At a collapsed gold mine in Rongo, Migori County, five fatality cases have been reported while rescue efforts continue.
Tuesday night, the Kanga gold mine collapsed.
George Otenga, the deputy county commissioner for Rongo sub county, reported that three miners perished inside the collapsed mine while two died while undergoing treatment.
18 miners were inside the collapsed mine at the time of the tragedy, according to Otenga, and they are currently accounting for all those that were impacted.
The Deputy County Commissioner stated that they have been notified that some of the miners trapped inside the collapsed mine were able to escape via different routes, and they are physically counting them to determine whether the 13 others survived.
In order to find every survivor of the mine collapse, Otenga indicated that officers had been dispatched.
He expressed his gratitude to all the participants in the late-night rescue operation. According to Otenga, the miners were found inside the 750-foot-deep mining hole thanks to the coordinated efforts of all parties involved.
In the meanwhile, the commissioner has urged the miners to prospect for gold responsibly in order to reduce the number of mining fatalities and injuries.
