Early on Wednesday, a bus and a milk truck collided in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and 19 injuries, according to authorities.

“The bus rammed into the tanker from behind, killing 18 people and leaving 19 others injured,” The district police chief’s office spokesperson Zulfiqaar Ali told AFP.

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister, described the smash as “heart-wrenching”.

According to broadcaster NDTV, the bus was traveling from the eastern state of Bihar to the capital city of New Delhi.

In India, there are a lot of traffic accidents; according to government projections, 168,000 people died in 2022.

In May, at least 21 passengers were killed and over 50 injured when the bus they were riding in tumbled down a deep valley in Indian-administered Kashmir.
