A family lost seven cows and nine sheep after an apparent arson incident at Murumba village on Sunday night in Gem, Siaya County.
The family’s cattle corral was allegedly set on fire by arsonists, according to the locals, scorching the animals beyond recognition.
The caretaker of the house reported that he was awakened at 4 a.m. by neighbors reporting that the cattle enclosure was on fire.
He rushed to the scene but discovered all the animals inside were already ravaged by the intense fire.
The caretaker attempted in vain to put out the fire with the assistance of the villagers, saying that he was only able to save one sheep.
The family said they suppose one of their neighbors, who has had disputes with the caretaker, started the fire.
They now want an investigation into the neighbor.
Assistant Chief Millicent Otieno of the area denounced the event and stated that inquiries have already been made into the matter.
She issued a warning, saying the suspects would face consequences.
Additionally, the administrator gave the family directives to bury the animals’ carcasses.
Police are looking into the matter.
