When disaster hit, the middle-aged man was at his house in the Eshilarumwa area.

According to Tahiri Omumasaba, the family of Rashid Ondewa, his relatives were standing close to his kitchen at the time.
He was declared dead when they arrived at the Shianda hospital, despite their best efforts to rush him there.
“In our family, he has left a significant void. In the family, Rashid played a crucial role, Omumasaba said.
The deceased was recalled by vendors at his former workplace, Shianda Market, as a conscientious businessman.
