After a nine-year recess, Brussels Airlines, the national airline of Belgium, has resumed direct flights to Nairobi.
There are currently six weekly flights on the route operated by the airline, which is a part of the Lufthansa Group.
Due to the increased availability of connecting flights between Europe and North America via Brussels, the airline decided to resume service on the route in response to the expanding number of travel options between Kenya and other destinations.
Since then, the State Department for Transport has praised the Belgian carrier’s return to the Nairobi–Brussels route.
Speaking on Monday during the inaugural return flight to Nairobi, Transport PS Mohamed Daghar stated that Kenya’s policy of entry without a visa has encouraged the weekly flights.
He added that Nairobi has become a regional air travel center due to its advantageous position and the city’s expanding corporate and business activity.
The airline has focused on connecting customers from the North American region as well as corporate clients flying on business trips in order to increase its market share in the Kenyan route. The United Nations offices are located in Nairobi, making diplomatic and business travel an integral passenger class for the airline.
Since the route was reintroduced, the Belgian carrier reports that over 50,000 customers have already reserved tickets to Nairobi and vice versa.
