In an effort to put an end to the countrywide doctors’ strike, the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) are scheduled to meet on Monday.
KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah stated in a statement to newsrooms that the meeting will provide a chance for the parties to have a productive conversation and attempt to resolve the issues mentioned in the Union’s strike notice.
The union advised doctors to refrain from working until the negotiations were fruitful.
“We want to emphasize that our strike continues until our demands are met. We understand the challenges and sacrifices each of you is making, and we want to assure you that your efforts are not in vain. Your unwavering commitment to our cause is what strengthens our position at the negotiating table,” KMPDU stated.
The strike was called by the union due to a number of reasons, including the MoH’s noncompliance with their 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and its refusal to post medical interns.
Despite a court order last week from Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Byram Ongaya suspending the doctors’ strike to allow for negotiations, the doctors have continued their strike.
The strike started on March 14, 2024.
