The “3 Body Problem” film, an adaptation of a renowned Chinese science fiction trilogy, marks the return of the “Game of Thrones” creators.
It makes its debut this weekend at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas, and on March 21 it will be available on Netflix.
Following their enormous success with “Game of Thrones,” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have translated extensively from Liu Cixin’s books, which have already been adapted for Chinese television.
Considered a sci-fi classic, the trilogy of books, which started with “The Three-Body Problem” in 2008, alternates between nations, eras, and protagonists as Earth faces an apocalyptic catastrophe.
Three of the most prominent actors from “Game of Thrones” are in the cast: Jonathan Pryce as an oil tycoon, Liam Cunningham as the head of an intelligence agency, and John Bradley as an Oxford scientist.
The showrunners attempted to replicate the same opulent and refined approach by bringing back important members of the production and effects teams as well as composer Ramin Djawadi.
Shot in England, Spain, the United Nations offices in New York, and Cape Canaveral, Florida, according to a brisk nine-month schedule.
