A day after being on the run, a suspect in the murders of five family members in Kisumu’s Muhoroni area was taken into custody.
After being taken into custody at the Chemelil police station on Sunday night, Shem Akuku Atieno is currently awaiting his arraignment.
Before his arrest on Sunday, he made a suicide attempt, according to police who are familiar of the incident.
The suspect’s children’s constant wailing at 8 p.m. on Saturday turned what had otherwise been a typical weekend into a terrifying event for the neighbors.
A neighbor named Monica Atieno recounted the terrifying incident:
According to reports, the guy killed his son and wife on Saturday.
He is reported to have gone to the next house with a machete in hand and killed his aunt Mary Otieno, 58, on the spot after viciously attacking his 78-year-old uncle.
After the act, according to reports, he fled into the neighboring sugarcane plantation.
The family and community are shocked by the deaths since there is no known motivation, and the suspect had no history of violence.
