Adan Haji Sheikh, the former Mandera South MP, has been summoned by the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to appear before it on February 13th in order to respond to allegations of corruption.
The former MP is charged with failing to disclose his affiliation with Lofta Resort Limited, a hotel that was prequalified and granted contracts to provide accommodation and conference services to Kwale County Government on various dates between May 10th, 2013 and May 2017, according to investigations carried out by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC).
After additional investigations, it was discovered that Haji, his wife Fatuma Ibrahim Roba, and his son Alibashir Adankhalif were listed as directors of Lofta Resort Limited. During the time under investigation, Lofta Resort Limited got Ksh. 51, 456,006 shillings from the Kwale County Government.
Section 42 and 48 of the Anti-corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003 were found to have been violated by Haji for neglecting to declare a conflict of interest during the tendering procedure.
The former lawmaker has reportedly been avoiding arrest since December 2023, according to the anti-graft agency, after the director of public prosecutions approved the EACC’s recommendations to bring charges against Adan Haji before the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court.
After he vanished, the EACC filed the charge sheet with the Mombasa court, and they have now obtained a summons requiring the former lawmaker to appear therein on February 13, 2024.
