Following an accident on Saturday night near the Mahiga Meeru area along the Nyahururu-Nyeri road, five people perished and nine others were injured.
The victims were two women and a driver from St. Peters Gaitega, Cathedral Parish, Catholic Diocese of Murang’a. They had joined thousands of other Catholic Women Association (CWA) members at the Marian Shrine in Subukia on Friday night for a national prayer meeting.
The remains of the four people who died there were brought to the Nyahururu County Hospital Mortuary, while the three survivors who had been rushed to Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital for treatment. Two of the survivors were discharged, and the third was admitted with head injuries.
Jecinta Njeri and Lucy Wanjiku are two of the survivors. They report that the driver of the fourteen-seater vehicle they were traveling in made a fruitless attempt to avoid colliding with a trailer approaching from the other direction.
Their vehicle was struck by the trailer, which seemed to have lost control and its brakes.
Faith Gitau, the women’s representative for Nyandarua County, who assisted the survivor, offered her sincere condolences to the victims.
