Tuesday’s planned post-mortem examination of a human head thought to be that of the late Rita Waeni was canceled at Nairobi’s City Mortuary.

Since Waeni’s disfigured body was found in a domestic apartment’s trash bin in Roysambu, Nairobi, on January 14, the case has been handled by Kasarani DCIO. The head was found on Sunday in Kiambaa Dam in Kiambu County.

But on Tuesday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit took over the case and ceased the post-mortem to conduct a forensic examination of the head that had been retrieved.

Following their apprehension in a rented apartment in Ndenderu, Kiambu County, two Nigerian nationals wanted in relation with Waeni’s death were arraigned on Monday.

During the two’s arrest, Kasarani DCI officers found a butcher’s knife and hatchet, six cell phones, multiple SIM cards, three laptop computers, and a Kenyan identity card.

According to the police, their investigations showed that the two had entered Kenya illegally.

Since then, Waeni’s family has disclosed that at 5 a.m. on the Sunday after her body parts were discovered, her father received a message from her phone number requesting Ksh. 500,000 in ransom to be paid within 24 hours in order to free her daughter. Waeni is a 20-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
